HAPPINESS COLUMN
My Helper Ohhh.


When I was growing up, there was no time that we didn't have someone or people living with us as helps, but the irony of it is that my mother, (side eyes to her), will make sure I do most of the work, cooking and, so I was always wondering what these people were doing in our house. And my mom will claim that she cannot stand by and watch me be useless, while she trains other people's children.

So, I was always pomising myself that when I grow up, my help will do her work, my daughter will learn from her ,so she won't be useless (which one is daughter doing house help work). The Nollywood movies then did not help matters, they always had this madam, with house help(s), at their beck and call, so my dream intensified, till I got some rude shock.

One of our help showed us shege, if not that I was strong willed and knew my way around the kitchen ehnn, she would have starved me and my siblings and gotten away with various atrocities, which includes bathing my younger ones with hot water, that she didn't dilute, taking the food she cooked, or the best part to her boyfriend, carrying our last born to her boyfriend's house, without feeding and leave him outside with any random person she sees, while she is inside having a blast, and so on, and so forth.

 I had to on my own, take over all these activities and begged my mom to either replace her or take my brother to daycare.

I thought that was a bad house help, until my friend in the University told me a story of what a house help did. According to her, their newly married neighbour had a baby girl, and her husband relative (a boy) was brought to help her. 

This baby was always sick, but doctors didn't know what was wrong with her, until the mom came back unexpectedly one day, and her baby was with the young guy inside his room, and the guy was sweating and acting nervous, like suspicious, so she quickly grabbed her baby, thinking that this guy has penetrated her baby, she looked the baby over, touched her bumbum, but the baby didn't cry out in pain, but she noticed that her mouth was closed, she quickly took her child to the hospital, and the doctor examined the child all over, opened her mouth and saw whitish substance, he smelt it and to cut the long story short, told the mother, that her baby had sperm in her mouth. 

So they interrogated the guy, and it turns out that he had been abusing the baby via her mouth and ejaculating inside her mouth, so the baby had been on a steady diet of sperm, hence the continuous illness. In fact that day in our hostel, was about horrible stories and stories about house help experiences. 

People of God, the fear of house helps fell on me, and I decided there and then, no house help for me, and if I have to have them, no live in, they will come and go.

There was one Oga of the house was sleeping with one from Cotonu,and she refused all gifts, but kept supplying him with free "something" with various styles, and according to the narrator, her pubic hair was plaited with beads, and the man thought he has seen mumu girl that knows nothing about "money for hand back for ground", but still fulfilled his fantasies, without him spending money.

Until one day, the help told him that she wanted to go back and she needed 2 million from him, and Oga gave her 200k ,that that is what she is worth, "a dirty house girl" like her demanding for that kind of money, nonsense. She threatened him, but he said if she tells the wife, he will beg her (wife) , citing temptation and weak moment. The girl laughed and told him that he should wait and see.

A week later, the wife was called from work by neighbours, to quickly come home, that they have been hearing a baby screaming in agony, and they have been banging the door since, no one is answering. The wife got home, and they discovered that the house help had put the baby inside a tub of hot water, packed her bags and disappeared. Police investigation brought out the reason she did it.
You think that my heading is about that church song? Sorry oh, it's my helper oh, has turned to my killer oh.

INSIDE THE MIND OF A WOMAN GOING THROUGH MOTHERHOOD


Few houses from mine, there is an uncompleted building, very bare with roofing sheets covering just two rooms. The toilet and bathroom are made of roofing sheets outside.

The owner a gentle looking quiet man who always minds his business, he complies with the communities rules and regulations unlike the rich neighbours who never do.

Though he never pays for the maintenance bill, I don’t know whether to pity him or not. A mean part of me who I try not to give a voice feels like his predicament serves him right. It will take God to set him free from the bondage he is, abi having two wives in just two rooms no be bondage.

The stories going round has it that because the first wife only bore him a daughter, he impregnated another lady and moved her into the room and parlour he shares with the first wife, the space is extremely cramped up for a family not to talk of two wives. The new wife has four kids in total and is currently pregnant . You can imagine what goes on there. The fights between the women are crazy. They curse at each other and scream down the area.

My sympathy lies with the first wife, I can imagine how disappointed she would feel and also the kids involved. I worry about them, they don’t deserve to grow up in such a toxic environment.

I really pray against all odds they turn out well.

"God can use anyone"

Sincerely, I am not a born again Christian but a sinner like everyone in here except with exceptions (those who claimed to be renewed in here). Don't forget, God can use you and I regardless the fact that we are a sinner.

Some weeks ago(say month and 2weeks), was chatting with my EX whom I dated back in school as a final year student, we talked at length and she told me she saw my wedding invitation and congratulated me on the brave move(which I appreciated  but thought of it like, hmmm, this girl wan use me catch cruise based on the fact that, I was a bad boy then).

I asked her when will she settle down, then she replied saying "Bisi, i am not like you now, I don marry and my marriage is now 6years". I was shocked and in my heart I said, Bisi, see your life, oponu oshi. we continued our chat like that and the next day we chatted again then I asked her about her children then she said she is yet to receive the fruit of the womb and she told me all she has done but all to no avail.

That same day, I was about going to bed and i am the kind of guy that doesn't pray for long, all I do is say the Lord's Prayer and then give thanks then off to sleep. I do the same thing when I wake up but that night was different, never knew what came into me, I prayed for almost 30minutes and even slept off while praying then I dreamt about my Ex.

Very early the next morning, I searched through my contact to call her but all effort proved abortive then I logged into my Facebook account, was lucky to get her line on her profile, called her to speak to her then she said why will I call her this early and besides who gave me her line.. I smiled then she asked, if what she said is funny and I said No because I know where she is coming from and where she is going to then she asked "Bisi what's the meaning of this?". I asked if her  husband is at home then she refused to reply me then I said, this is important and need to speak to both of you, it's for your sake not mine. She started laughing and said, ''Ori e ti daru'' then she cut the line.

That same day around 7pm, I was in bar with some friends, was just taking my normal malt because my alcohol intake is occasional then I logged into my Facebook then saw messages from her, she gave me story of my life, infact, I was so sad because of one statement, "Because I chatted you up to congratulate you, that was why you had that confidence to call me and and even asked to speak to my husband, if you cause problem in my home, your home will not be peaceful" then I felt so bad, so decided to still deliver the message then I sent her a text "Aunty, please am sorry for calling you but this is the reason why I called. please, tell your husband to buy fruits and a good gift for his mother, tell him to present it to his mum and ask his mum to pray for him. After this, God will surprise you''.

I thought she will call to curse me or whatever, but nothing came up but to my surprise, she called me up not quite long(today been 17th of September)that she was rushed to the hospital last night and confirmed pregnant, not only that, the husband spoke with me and said he wants to see me which I refused though by saying am the busy type because I never did it for money or gain, what I did was beyond my understanding. Several messages on my phone now, reading and laughing but I found them meaningless to me because have even forgotten about the message I sent her until this morning. 

She said they did as directed by me, and it was even the husband that saw the text and was moved and tend to do it because she was scared the text will cause problem in her home but it brought joy.

I pray to God to use me the more, I dream a lot and it usually come to pass but I forget them easily once I don't take action immediately.
