ReplyDeleteThe story of Leah shows the insecurities of women, women competing for a man's love, polygamy gone wrong, sibling rivalry, exploitation and favouritism. I will start with the last one then go up..
Genesis 29:16
Leah was not good looking and she became a casualty because of that. Rachael who is Leah's younger sister and later co-wife, was clearly favoured by their father and everyone else including their husband (Jacob). This is a case of pretty privilege because the Bible took time to mention in detail how Leah had a weak eye while Rachael was very beautiful in form and appearance.
Laban who is the father of Leah and Rachael is really not a good father figure because what father will trick a man to marry their daughter knowing fully well that that man doesn't want her and still exploit the man to work for him for 12 years. He also created the dynamics of sibling rivalry in his daughters. Jacob realising that he was being deceived took out his frustrations on poor Leah who just wanted to be loved who in turn resented her younger sister because she held the key to Jacob's heart which brings us to insecurities.
Leah thought her body, her being fertile would help her win the love of Jacob while Rachael thought her looks would keep her man and make her be loved by all. They were both insecure that it spilled out and caused hostility between them. But Leah's story isn't all sad and gloom..ultimately, the line of Jesus Christ came through her son Judah which means she was the Great grand grand grandmother of the Messiah! Such Legacy in her resumé. 🙌🏼 She was being set up for failure from the beginning but God gave her that honour.
The significance of Leah's character is it exposes the troubles in polygamy, women being victims of arranged marriages and that God indeed does have favourites.

ReplyDeleteMy son's school is resuming 13th of September,I just engage them with cocomelons and educative cartoons and alpha blocks,we need to observe what cartoon networks are showing these days,too many demonic shows,cbeebies is trying though
