A Sharia Court sitting in Rigasa, Kaduna on Wednesday sentenced a 34-year-old woman, Zainab Ibrahim to six months imprisonment for burning a house belonging to her former husband’s new wife.
The prosecution counsel, Sambo Maigari narrated to the court that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 174 and 373 of Shari’a criminal procedure.
He said that the convict confessed that she used petrol to burn the new bride’s house out of jealousy.
In her plea for mercy, she claimed that she was an obedient wife to her former husband until he divorced her to take another wife.
“He had promised to bring me back to my matrimonial home but did not after I served him and his parents for many years.
“The house belongs to me and my seven children,” she said.
The Judge, Malam Salisu Abubakar-Tureta sentenced her after she pleaded criminal trespass and mischief by fire.
He gave her an option of N10,000 fine and ordered her to pay N131,000 as compensation for burning some household items belonging to Maryam Ramalan.

ReplyDeleteThis is what we talk about all the time on this site. This isn't about feminism, it basic humanity. After seven children her body will not be the same, she will be tired all the time and made into a workhorse. But the man can simply upgrade her and move on with a fresh untouched youngin while nobody will look her side to take on seven kids. She has been used and put aside like trash. I get why she did what she did, I get the anger at being treated as disposable. I understand her pain. Nobody should be treated like this, especially in a culture where such treatment creates shame and disgrace.
ReplyDeleteFamily planning and taking full control of your fertility is a start. Getting a formal education or skill training is vital. No wife should ever get comfortable in a culture where she can be replaced in an instant. Seek to own your own properties in your own name and have your own money so that you will land on your feet come what may. The heart of a man sways like the ocean never trust it completely.
You said it all.
DeleteLol some ladies got no chills at all...
