The Adventures Of Oko Ashawo The Uber Driver - 82

Oko Ashawo don come again!!!

Drug abuse and addiction is almost a hopeless situation especially among our youth today and I believe the only way out of that miserable state is through some sort of intervention.

There seems to be no fear anymore and the younger generation is getting bolder as they display their acts of indiscipline and indulging in all sorts that will leave one’s mouth hanging.

I recently took a young guy in his early twenties to school in one of the private universities in the South Western States and he gave me a nylon pack to discard for him on my way back. He said he was afraid that something may go wrong this time as he had some prohibited substances with him.

Another experience I also had a while back was with a girl from a very rich home who was a junkie. As I drove her to school, she stopped by at a pharmacy, bought some syrup, mixed the contents with a soft drink and alcoholic in a water bottle and drank all through the journey.

One young girl in her early twenties I picked up from a hotel sometime last week had a quarrel with her boyfriend as she entered my car. They hurled abusive words at each other and the girl called him impotent because he could no longer have an erection at age 25 without the help of drugs and stimulants.

When I hear the names or the codes given to these drugs, it leaves my mouth hanging and this has made me realize that there is a very big problem to grapple with in the near future if there is no timely intervention.

It is really sad that our traditional value systems have been greatly eroded. What people used to hide to do in those days is now done brazenly in the open. We still had our conscience in place to check us then but this new generation no send you. I believe these interventions must start from the homes and parents have to be alert and pay more attention to their children.

Finally, there should be collaboration amongst all sectors of society to address this drug menace. Parents, guardians, schools, government, health care providers, Pharmas, NGOs and media have huge roles to play together. I believe when all hands are on deck, this huge challenge of drug addiction and abuse in the country becomes controllable.

*NDLEA Chairman well done oh

  4. Very good observation Mr. Oko.
What I don't think you exhaustively discussed is the
way forward to curbing it. It all boils down to good home
training. Train up a child in the way he/she should go and he
    will not depart from it.
But when a child is trained with looted monies of which he/she has
unlimited access to, things like this is the result.
My experience is that most people I witnessed Christ to get cleaned up
supernaturally when they repented genuinely of their sins and called upon
Jesus to save them. Others, needed some fruit fasts to clean up. The common
thing among them is that they have no urge to indulge in these substance abuse at all.
They rather develop the urge to study God's Words.
Again, the confectionary shops are being raided by these substances. Beware of the
cakes and chin chins you eat; they may be laced and you may be hooked.
Finally, the pharmacies needs to be regulated as to getting prescription drugs. There
isn't a law enacted with a biting teeth.

    1. Very true. It should start from the homes. Many parents are so busy that they don't have time for their kids anymore. They leave the training and upbringing of their children to caregivers or house helps. This is very sad indeed

  6. A very good observation, this drug issue has eaten so deep into the society, the last time I went home,I almost cried, young girls and boys between the ages of 15-20 are on one drug or the other and at the same to defying school doing so many atrocities,I wonder what the future will be like, the so called little kids of yesterday are growing to be so irresponsible,Who should we fault?the parents for not training them,or the government,or pharmacist selling drugs without prescription, the Igbo sellers or Jedi sellers,my heartache Ikorodu Lagos state is something else

  16. The rate of drug abuse these days is very high and most especially among youth of nowadays. The crazy thing is that it is easily available and accessible and youths of these days succumb easily to peer pressure. They can't say no and these drugs are very addictive. All these lekki oloshos are hooked on one drug or the other. They say it turns them on or put them in the mood. Infact everything is on the increase now, even olosho population has doubled if not tripled.
