This was announced on Friday by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Adeyemi.
Twitter deleted a post by the Nigerian President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday.
The President had condemned the attacks on police stations, prisons and offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission, especially in the South-East, warning that those supporting insurrection and violence in the country would be shocked.
Buhari had tweeted, “Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”
The President’s tweet riled some persons who felt he was insensitive to have made an analogy of the civil war. His critics subsequently reported the tweet to Twitter and the microblogging site later deleted the post with a comment, “This Tweet violated the Twitter Rules”.
Mohammed subsequently knocked Twitter for supporting insurrection in Nigeria since last October during the #EndSARS protests which ended in the destruction of lives and properties all over the country.
Reacting consequently on Friday in a statement, the minister said the Buhari government has suspended the activities of Twitter in the country.
The statement titled, ‘FG Suspends Twitter’s Operations in Nigeria’, read, “The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of
the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.
“The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday,
citing the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.
“The Minister said the Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting Commission to immediately commence the
process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.”
The PUNCH had earlier reported that a lawyer and member of the President’s All Progressives Congress ruling party, Dr Daniel Bwala, said Twitter deleted Buhari’s post out of malice but failed to delete the inciting posts of leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
Bwala had also accused Twitter Chief Executive Officer, Jack Dorsey, of supporting a process that could have led to insurrection in Nigeria since last October during the #EndSARS protest.
He had also urged the Federal Government to launch an official complaint with the United States Congress to invite Twitter CEO to explain his recent role in the activities in Nigeria that are widely regarded as agitation for secession.

Does this mean people can't access their twitter account again in Nigeria? Because I'm not on twitter, opened it more than 3 times but can't still find myself using it
ReplyDelete*Larry was here*
Bunch of illiterates, in a country where people provide thier own data.
DeleteJust get VPN and you are good to go, just leave these clowns.
If twitter opened office here that's how they would have closed it down.
Starry you dont need a twitter account to open twitter, just search for any twitter account you want to view on goggle, once it opens view and enjoy urself, but u cant comment or like a post if you dont have an account. I love twitter so much thanks to jack. Best place to be with little data unlike ig.
DeleteThe only good thing about this is that we will no longer see the annoying tweets of Adamu Garba and Lauretta Onochie.
DeleteNdi ara everywhere 😡😡😡
ReplyDeleteIt's ironic Nigeria announces Twitter suspension on their Twitter account.
DeleteI just logged on and it's still working 🤷🤷
Delete🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 its funny how there have been killings, kidnappings all over and they never called a press conference. Just because they deleted one tweet Liar Mohammed and Buharia want to run mad. E pain dem, e shock them ooooo 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
ReplyDeleteTwitter’s mission in Nigeria is suspect — FG"
ReplyDeleteReally? are they diplomats? business men, domiciled in Nigeria? I thought president Buhari took his maggot infested bottom to Twitter's servers and they gave him a thorough wash down.
I just tire
DeleteYou won't see Eesah here oooo
It's the "maggot infested bottom" for me! 😂 😂 😂 😂
DeleteUmu anumpama doesn't know that we'd still access our precious Twitter accounts with our VPN. Old worn-out silly dunkies.
Jack is the man, i too love that man, not only does he look rugged, he's actually rugged and smart and wise, and doesn't give a damn! He graciously moved his African headquarters to Ghana. 😍😍😍✊✊
After the reggae, we will play the blues.
ReplyDeleteTrouble, wahala and iyanga will dance indefinitely.
I laugh in Afemai....
ReplyDeleteIt is beyond appalling to hear the president of a country gloat over what happened during the civil war - with the innocent, women and children suffer unimaginable pain and destruction. A statesman would rather look at the root cause of the present problem and deal with it than spin into rage. Pray, why did the president not crawl out in rage against herdsmen who have been the source of nightmare throughout Nigeria? Why did he never go beyond tepid admonition of boko haram? The president can do better than beating the war drum.
ReplyDeleteSee the children that were kidnapped in minna, small kids, aged 3 and 4.
DeleteI wept today watching it
Yet it's twitter that is his problem.
They think they are dealing with weak minded Nigerians...
This govt has shown time without number that it is vindictive, wicked and evil.I just wonder how a pastor and SAN continues to be part of it.
ReplyDeleteIn the mind of Lar Mohammed, any person, group or organization that expresses a divergent view from this government's has a suspicious mission against Nigeria. He now equates the President of Nigeria with Mr. Nnamdi kanu of IPOB. He'd have no qualms if Twitter and other int'l media begin to hold and judge them by the same standards. This govt can disappoint in every particular
ReplyDeleteLair Muhammad mouth look like pig yanshi....🐷🐷😂😂
ReplyDeleteThe FG still use the same twitter to announce the suspension... SMH
DeleteWhat a country. What a president. We go dey alright one day.
ReplyDeleteMoment of Truth!
ReplyDeleteThe enemies of Nigeria; Buhari and his cohorts are unraveling.
🙄🙄
Tnk God I have no interest , biz or liking for Twitter. In fact, I detest Twitter .
ReplyDeleteStill doesn't make it okay, i don tire to shame for our leaders
DeleteMy dear you are missing a lot. Twitter is the bestest app in the world with little data you get all the gist you want. I love jack for giving us twitter
DeleteThank 'god' you have no Twitter and have no interest in it, so because of that, every sane young Nigerian using their Twitter accounts for creating awareness and exposing the tyranny and evilness of the leaders should go sort themselves out oria? As long as you're concerned, it doesn't concern you, it's not your business. Is this about you and the things you like? You are one of the problems we're dealing with in this zoo. May God have mercy on you.
DeleteTwitter be doing the most but i don't think the app deserves a ban in Nigeria.BVs that love twitter like me,where you at?

And as for taking the issue to UN , they will just dismiss it, Useless Mofos
VPN to the rescue. Mtchewww
ReplyDeletePlease what is the meaning of VPN
DeleteVPN stands for Virtual Private Network. It is used for routing your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel that nobody can see into, including hackers, governments, and your internet service provider. In simpler terms, when you activated VPN on your device, the assumed location of the device could be Australia, Brazil, Belize, Trinidad & Tobago, Cambodia or Togo, while you are actually physically in Nigeria. Hence, you will not be affected by any internet service control by the Nigerian government, when VPN is active on your device. Your internet protocol (IP) address is masked, which leads to your online activities being virtually untraceable.
DeleteThanks but please how can one access the VPN?
DeleteDont worry Buhari...dem go soon delete your posts on Facebook, Instagram and position in African Union and even United Nations.
ReplyDeleteOmg. Can't stop laughing. Buhari is a tyrant.
