ACP Chioma Ajunwa Emotional As Nigerian Govt Redeems 25 Year Pledge To Gift Her A House For Winning Gold In 1996 Olympics

Governor Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Thursday, presented keys to a three-bedroom apartment in Babatunde Raji Fashola Housing Estate in Iponri to Assistant Commissioner of Police Chioma Ajunwa - Oparah, the first African woman to win a gold medal in the Olympic Games
She is with the Lagos Police Command.

Sanwo-Olu made the presentation at a reception held for Lagos State’s athletes who participated in the recently concluded National Sports Festival in Edo State. Lagos won 125 medals, including 32 gold and 27 silver medals in the contest.

Ajunwa-Oparah, a long jump athlete, put Nigeria on the global radar after she won a gold medal in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. She was promised a house by the then Military Government, but the pledge was not fulfilled before the country returned to democracy in 1999.

  2. This is so emotional. To think that she chose to still serve the country despite the failed promise is worthy of commendation.

    3. It took more than 25 years for the people abiola was wining and dining with to acknowledge that he won an election. Ordinary Chioma got her own in 25 years. I don't even think Rohr's house has been completed. Yes, it's a sorry case but if you compare Chioma's case with other cases, my dear, it is a testimony!

  15. Congratulations Chioma Ajunwa. Indeed God is gracious. I watched her interview with Manny on channels few weeks back were she discussed some of her travails and how NPF came to her aid. It was an emotional discuss.

Thank God Lagos state courtesy Sanwolu had to redeem the pledge to write off the wrong did to her. Even after the interview I was expecting her state governor to step and fulfill the pledge but alas our Eastern governors will always show why the east remain backward.
