Actress Rita Dominic Shares Her Thoughts On Marriage And Why She Unveiled Her Lover

This week’s episode of #WithChude featured a candid conversation with Rita Dominic, one of Nigeria’s finest actresses, who shared with the viewers her thoughts on marriage, the reason behind going public with her relationship and how she has been able to stay relevant for over 23 years.

Speaking on the issue of relationships and marriage, the veteran actress told host, Chude Jideonwo, “I respect the institution of marriage as my parents were married till they died, and they had a beautiful relationship. The problem is at some point, it begins to annoy you because of how much importance people have placed on it. I do want to marry, and I want to get it right once and for all. You know, we make such a big deal of it; we force people and put pressure on them to go in. When they eventually rush into this union, they make mistakes because they were only trying to please people".

For Rita Dominic, when it comes to handling negativity from the public as regards her marital status and romantic relationships, the strategy is simply to ignore their comments.

She says....

“Over the years, it has stopped irritating me because people will always speculate. They do this because they don’t have anything tangible, so they create stories and rumours. I am at a place where I just laugh at their rumours. Being popular, you have to come to terms with the fact that people will create untrue stories. Some people will argue and say there is no smoke without fire, and to those ones, I say, darling, there are smoke machines".

Only recently, the trailblazing actress broke the internet with images of her never-before-seen partner. When asked about the reason for the reveal, she said, “once in a while, you want to share certain things with people, and I felt like my lover had been there for me for decades. We all had a bad year last year with COVID, and we could do with some happiness.”

Rita attributed her success and 23-year industry relevance to her ability to learn and evolve, saying, “I never rest on my laurels, I see the need to constantly learn and grow in my craft while also having an open mind to learn from everybody,” she said.

  1. Even at 29 when people make silly jokes to me about marriage, I feel like strangling them. Marital questions are the worst.

One yeye guy asked me one time when I'm getting married, out of annoyance I relied whenever he dies.

    1. Don't call the guy" yeye" he's asking you a vital question. At 29 you should be in a serious relationship or married already.

    2. Babe eh,I almost slapped my former class mate last December! He was saying see how good looking I am and how I was doing shakara to men then and refused to settle down that even till now I'm still forming 🥺🥺 that make him help my ministry as he's single too after the wife left him!! I just controlled myself and walked away before I go kill person! So alot of people will surely rob it in but God help us to avoid them!

    3. And if she's not in a serious relationship at 29,should she kill herself. Please ladies take your time and get it right. I got married at 32 at the right time. Had all my babies be4 35. My spouse and i are waxing strong. Do not let anyone push you into a wrong hand. Better late than early and miserable.

    4. Even as a single guy in my 30s, i get asked that question and i just laugh and tell them my wife is in primary 2 jokingly. I try to just create humour out of their questions cos people would always talk, taunt and act like they care. Bottom line, YOU CANNOT AND SHOULD NOT DANCE TO THE TUNE OF THEIR IMAGINATIVE JUKEBOX. Kapish?

There are sooooo many irresponsible men out there now,dat it is better to be single than be with them bcos they will draw you back in life. One irresponsible neighbour married with kids just loaned money from me,made d mistake of loaning him cos he said it was an emergency, not known dat is what hes known for despite earning 3times my salary, all his money is used on bars and carrying call girls.d wife is always crying to me.

    9. Anon 8:52 people like u are not asking that question because u actually care so stop the b.s! U secretly wanna pressure people into rushing into bad marriages since ur so miserable in urs. N as we know misery loves company. One married old hag in my office told me I should do n go n marry. N I simply told her I'm waiting for her to move her yansh so that I can take her place in her husband's life. I almost received query but at least she learned to mind her damn business.

  11. When will journalists/Nigerians stop asking people (male and female) about marriage? I've seen a nineteen year old girl interviewed on TV and they still asked her when she was planning to marry. They even matchmake babies and a woman with a son begins to call her neighbour's 2 year old daughter "my wife"! Shey dem swear for dem and marriage pressure ni?

    1. Nigerians will pressure a 6month old baby into crèche. Then complain the baby cries too much and disturbs other kids.
    2. Pressure a one year old into school. Then complain the child is lagging behind at school.
    3. Pressure a 15 year old into the university. Then complain they graduated with a Pass.
    4. Pressure an undergraduate of 18 into a relationship. Then complain she is loose.
    5. Pressure a 25 year old into marriage. Then complain she is not watching "war room" if she dares complain about a difficult spouse.
    6. She gets divorced at 32 and they start pressuring her to remarry all over again. Then complain she is a side-chick or dating married men.
    7. I've even heard them pressure someone to kuku die for being sick for some time with no healing in sight! Then complain the person committed suicide.
    8. They will pressure Banky and Susu about pregnancy; then complain about "over-testimony" when God wipes their tears.
    9. They will pressure you into addressing poverty (quite good though). Then when you become rich(er) than them, they will start investigating your source of wealth.
    10. Let me off the mic mbok.

    World people, o gini di!!!

As for me ehn, the moment you start asking my child how he's doing at school, mbok I will devise a means to ensure you leave early (if you are visiting) or you never say hello on the phone again. Don't coman pressure my child if we don't borrow school fees from you. And when they know the child is an alpha student, they will then start pressuring their own kids or broadcasting the child to world people. Avoid people who ask you "pressure" questions or make "pressure" comments. They are hired assassins disguised as well-meaning folks. Be vigilant! Reject "world people" pressure so that your days may be long and happy.

Dating your lover for more than decades and you still feel like sharing it to the world as what pls.honestly these celebs should only be emulate by their dressing not their lifestyles...what a waste of years and pls dont come here to justify your reasons of waiting for a man who doesn't fancy or find you worthy to be a wife but a decade lover.

    2. They've never asked anyone to emulate them. In fact, some have come out in recent times to ask people not to see them as role models. Who ever chooses to emulate them does that at their own risk!

  14. Rita, as a celeb, pls get your PR team to vet the questions you are asked during interviews. Remove all marriage related questions, answer only questions you want. This is slowly becoming your identity. When last was Kim asked about sex tape in an interview or Khloe asked about surgery.. questions like that are vetted and removed by Kris Jenner. Genevieve is single as well but when last did she answer any relationship related question? Don't be giving the world a chance to continue judging you when they don't know your story. You know our society well and no matter your explanation they see it as your fault. Even in their imperfect lives they will form opinion and advice on yours. Because you said something. Just keep silent and confuse them with mystery. 🤫

  15. Single, problem; marry, when are the babies coming, is it male or female, one is not enough, is five not to much? Divorced, see can't even keep a home; Widowed/widower, maybe God is punishing you; single parent, ashawo. All these pressure from those who actually ought to know better but no, they will mind their business. Is this a Nigerian/African thing? Do the western world obssess with the fear of loneliness, interference with other people's private business as we do? What of purpose, happiness and self-love, does any one care?
