Teen Mum Charged With Killing 20 Month Old Daughter She Left Alone In Flat For 6 Days To Celebrate Birthday

A teenage mum who left her baby daughter to starve to death while she was out celebrating her 18th birthday has admitted manslaughter.

Verphy Kudi’s 20-month-old daughter Asiah Kudi died at an address in Brighton in December 2019.

A court heard how Kudi walked out on baby Asiah on the day she turned 18 and ended up partying for six days before she returned. CCTV showed she left her Brighton flat on December 5, 2019 and did not come back until December 11 when she found her baby dead.

Data gathered by Sussex Police showed Kudi had been at parties in London, Coventry and Solihull before returning to Brighton. The infant was taken to Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival. A post-mortem examination and forensic tests found that Asiah’s death was the result of neglect. In the six days she was alone, the child starved and was dehydrated.

She also contracted influenza.

Kudi, now 19, appeared in the dock at Lewes Crown Court on Friday morning wearing a face mask. She had been due to stand trial later this year but formally entered a guilty plea to a charge of manslaughter on Friday. Kudi spoke only confirm her name and enter the guilty plea.

She held her hands to her face after the charge of manslaughter was read to her. Judge Christine Laing QC told her: ‘You have heard that before I get to sentence you the defence want to get a report on your behalf and a doctor will no doubt make arrangements to see you and interview you over the next few weeks.’

She ordered that all social services records relating to the case be disclosed to the defence ahead of sentencing. The case was adjourned to a provisional sentencing date of May 28, but Kudi was warned this may be delayed.

Speaking after the heading, Verphy’s father, Muba Kudi, 59, said: ‘My heart is so broken. My daughter was missing. She had been missing since the age of 14.’

  1. A heartbreaking story like yesterday's chronicle too! How can you leave an infant for six whole days? Maybe she's mentally unstable cos I don't get or she has dementia! This life eh,alot of people are looking for children then this one killed her's! Lord have mercy

    1. She was too young, immature and unprepared to raise a child. Her actions are not rare here in the UK. They get homes from the government when they have these babies but still can't stay at home.

  2. I know this story and followed it since 2019 when her sis blasted her on twitter for lying about her age while soliciting (verphy was 14 then).

She’s a product of neglect and abuse herself, her poor baby was a product of rape at 15. She was also a runaway..there have been countless amber alerts of her missing. She’s estranged from her family.

But the difference between Verphy and yesterday’s chronicle is this girl still had a lil conscience to call 911 about her baby not breathing after leaving her for 6 days but the parents of Leo thought it was better to freeze him even tho they claim not to be guilty.

Am I playing Devil’s advocate? Yes but it is what it is.

  3. Parenting is not easy
Parenting as a single mom is not easy. I wish she got a babysitter. I wish women will have honest conversations about pregnancy and childbirth instead of the usual "when I saw my baby, I felt joy immediately". If that's so, why do we have baby blues and post natal depression?

It's important women have honest conversation with teen girls and other women. Shade Oladipo tried doing that but she worded it bizarrely.

Motherhood is not a walk in the park. If it is, you won't see women screaming like mad women at their children. It can drain you physically and emotionally. It's important you prepare for motherhood and also remember, no matter how you prepare, it will not be easy.

Think twice before you have unprotected sex.
Married or single, think twice before you have unprotected sex that will lead to pregnancy. Two people will have sex, one person will bear the responsibility. If you are not ready, don't attempt it.

If you have children and you are overwhelmed, ask for help. Ignore those women who act like supermoms. You need to be emotionally and mentally balanced to raise kids. Ask for help. Continue to ask. Have playdates, have babysitters, have domestic staff, take time out for self-care. If you can't afford it, ask help from a relation. Ask, ask, ask and ask.

    Stop that supermom bullcrap.
Women are humans. We get tired and overwhelmed. Sometimes you see these women take out their frustrations on their domestic help whereas, a simple self-care would have solved the issue. If you are overwhelmed, send them on holiday to your sister, parents or brothers house.

    Take a breather.

May her young innocent soul rest in peace. She surely doesn't deserve all this.

    1. You are right in all you said.....i just wish she had given up this child for adoption instead of this painful death.
But you see majority of these UK teen moms keep their kids for selfish gains. Bcos of d flat dat comes with having the child and the benefits money they get on the child. Many of them dont work and want their own flat, boom they get pregnant and get money on each child.

    4. Well said xoxo. Bringing up children is the HARDEST thing in the world. Having small children with no help or support took me to the edge of madness and destroyed my health. It is well!

  5. And one worthy, good, kindhearted, and caring woman that'd put her life up for her child if need arises is somewhere now crying and begging God for just one child. This life ehh.

  6. I wonder what she thought would happen to a child she left for 5days not 1 day !! In that 5 days she ate and drank but totally forgot about a whole human being.

Poor baby would have cried so much, would have been distressed and dehydrated.

Parenting comes with responsibilities, the reality is your life is now more or less centred around your child. If you can't do it, take the pill, take precautions or give the baby up for adoption.
