ReplyDeleteNigerians are the most wicked when it comes to preparing food for others to eat. Everything is money no value for human life. I will never buy them again to eat but again wetin person go eat for naija. Even if you cook at home, foodstuff from market are rippened with carbide, cooking fruits. We need to have food inspectors that check all these evil acts. Use panadol cook meat, cook fruits to ripen fruits, transformer oil to fry akara/potato, mix soya beans with akara to fry e.t.c. wicked set of people

I used to think my mum just love stressing herself when we were growing up,she made us do everything we eat from scratch.I mean why can't we just buy Akara and moi moi from outside instead of picking beans and still going to grind it.just too much stress.Or is it the bitterleaf,ugwu and scent leaf she planted at our backyard?She hates eating outside.When I started living alone,I eat out almost everyday plus work stress.

ReplyDeleteI worked at a buka in lagos, I was one of the cool, my madam employed her relative to be the one in charge of clearing and washing dishes.
We taught she was being fair and not minding the rest of us cooking and restocking our buka.
It was a road side buka built with bamboos.
Later I observed the girl called itohan will recycle unfinished food and repackage and resell, she will carefully cut out the leftover swallow.. No matter how small, she will still use it.
I moved to a more better restaurant and low and behold, I was shocked with how they buy in bulk and preserve them.
Chai, we bring our own food from home and madam also, I can name the food I eat there.
This woman is a witch, I can't even bring myself to say what I saw, it's hard to believe, you go fear fear..
A Co worker that left after she and madam clashed, reason was her cousin came to shop and wanted to eat, but the lady insisted they leave, cousin insisted oh, na so madam suspect her for bad market, since then madam gave her hell.
The girl went to police but madam bribed her way.
Me I left there years ago, I heard she is late now..
I will just advice you to avoid these listed food outside.

If you must eat, eat something you can rinse.. As in wash for example

It was last week that I learnt at the salon that some mkt women refry garri to be very crispy and mix it with peeled melon. From there,they grind the melon/garri mix to make it much.
DeleteWhen you buy those already grounded melon in the market to cook,it will have a different kind of paste. Very light and dosent smell so much like melon.

ReplyDeleteThat was how I bought fresh tomatoes sometime ago. They were so fresh and red that I washed one and decided to eat it. I spat it out as soon it touched my tongue. Fresh red tomato was very bitter, bitter. I disposed the rest. I now understood what happened to one stew I made that was bitter. I thought it was the pepper seeds (bell pepper or tatashe) I didn't remove them before grinding in the market. Till today I don't know what they used to ripen the them that caused he bitterness but I know it is an harmful chemical

DeleteSorry, but the bitterness may not be from chemicals. I grow tomatoes and know it depends on the seedling. They naturally have a tartness. Sometimes, it's stronger and is in the skin. This is why sometimes your stew tastes 'bitter' and other times it doesn't. It all depends on the tartness. Unfortunately, I haven't found a sure way to tell yet, but I am working on it.

My mum owns a poultry in the east. One woman came to meet my mum to say she wanted to invest in the business. We asked my mum to tell her to write a business plan on how she wanted the business to progress and solutions.
ReplyDeleteHer plan to for my mum to use growth hormones so that instead of rearing the chickens for 12 weeks, they will reduce it to 6 to 7 weeks by pumping them with hormones, and reduce cost of feeding too.
My mum told her not to contact her again. She said my mum wasn’t a good business woman because she was using organic food and raising the birds for 12 weeks.

The sad thing is that for us who live abroad, it is only the foods from Nigeria that have been altered. Food from other African countries are still fine. We all have a problem that is endemic in Nigeria and it’s from the top all the way to the grassroots.
ReplyDeleteThat's not true for me. Sometimes the food from African countries are affected by the things US customs sprays on them and how long they were at the port. Other times, it's the sellers abroad who adulterate the food. I've gotten bad batches of things from different countries and learned it depends on how they came in.

He takes out time during the end of the week to rear his poultries and look after all his food produce. At first, I chuckled to think he bought a costly land close to his house just for the sake of his stomach but now, I see it goes beyond that and it was worth all the stress.

ReplyDeleteWouldn't food fried with plastic be water-proof and last forever? Hmm. I've read similar posts on Asian and American foods and people have tried to show it's impossible for this to happen, especially with the kind of plastic we have in Nigeria. Video evidence or I don't believe it. Food poisoning can be a reaction to a natural ingredient too or even something you ate before your last meal. Not all reactions are to unnatural things.

ReplyDeleteSome of us here are gradually weaning off our food after hearing horrible tales and cutting $8yam that turned purple inside. We heard they dry fish & shrimps with formaldehyde and spray nitrous oxide to make unripe plantain look bright yellow when you buy it and black by the time it gets home. Formaldehyde is used as a preservative in the lab and other places I’d rather not mention. Most ethnic stores are wicked. They change the expiration date on mcvities cookies and Jacob’s crackers and sell adulterated and expired food. For those who buy cream there, your crusader or other bleaching corticosteroids by whatever brand name probably expired 4 years ago. The State doesn’t inspect or care because it’s patrons are black immigrants and they honestly couldn’t care less. I haven’t cooked with palm oil in over a decade, I’d rather use canola or corn oil or olive oil to cook and the chips I buy are from central or Latin American
ReplyDeletecountries where they also eat plantain. Thank God plantain is now in many Walmart’s and regular grocery stores but I didn’t raise my children on Naija food. The reason is exactly what is now happening.
Besides take $120 to the ethnic store you come out with 3 or 4 bags. Take the same to the regular grocers and you get more bang for your buck in addition to the fact that they pull the expired stuff since they report to goverment and get inspected. Bless the person who told me about oatmeal “Amala” as it’s the major solid my husband and I eat with jute from Latin America. The desperation of naijas for shady undeserved money is mind boggling.
