President Buhari's Media Aide Garba Shehu Says The 43 Farmers Killed By BH Didn’t Have Clearance To Farm

The Presidency on Monday stated that the 43 farmers that were killed by Boko Haram on Saturday did not have military clearance to be on the rice farms when the attack happened.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said this in an interview with the BBC on Monday.

He said while not blaming the victims for the incident, the truth must be said.

Shehu said, “The government is sad that this tragic incident has happened. 43 or thereabout of innocent farm workers, most of them had their throats slit by a heartless band of terrorists. People need to know what it is like in the Lake Chad Basin area.

“Much of those areas have been liberated from Boko Haram terrorists but there are a number of spaces that have not been cleared for the return of villagers who have been displaced. So, ideally, all of these places ought to pass the test of military clearances before farmers or settlers resume activities on those fields.”

When asked if he was not blaming the farmers for going to the area, Shehu responded, “Not exactly but the truth has to be said. Was there any clearance by the military which is in total control of those areas? Did anybody ask to resume activity? I have been told by the military leaders that they had not been so advised and certainly, therefore, it was a window that the terrorists exploited.”

    1. This is the most useless statement made by a foolish government. A government that dose not carr for its people. You are asking them to take permission before the work to put food on their table. As a government your priority is to your people, but no all you guys think about is to enrich yourselves. In a sane country, you would resign honorably, but in 9jia mbanu. It's till you die in the office. Bunch of wicked souls.

    2. Which military? The ones that are invested on end sars protest? How will they have time to do their duty defending our boundary integrity when that is not their main concern?

    3. It shall never be well with this Govt. I dont know who is more foolish in this Garba shehu,Lia Mohammed or dat bush baby Loretta...they talk with so much insensitivity.
Receive clearance really? Did Govt make provisions for dem so they dont farm? Is it not hunger dat will make them resume farming. When even ordinary palliatives during covid dat Govt got for free you evil politicians were hoarding it.
Anyone making excuses or blaming dese farmers is EVIL.

    4. Nigeria is a joke to be honest, why are our politicians like this? No empathy whatsoever.
One thing I have learnt with living in the abroad is that you just don't talk anyhow, you have to reason properly before opening your mouth.
Imagine if this was a politician abroad, he will be apologising first thing tomorrow morning and also handing in his resignation.
Nigeria is not a country to reckon with I swear to God 🙄.

    1. This is the height of insensitivity. Is Shehu Garba now blaming the farmers? How low can we get in this bizarre game of providing excuse for the government's ineptitude? A very big shame indeed!

  5. So people can't even farm in their own farmlands in their own country?
You hide palliatives in warehouses to sell and make money.
You can't even protect farmlands, the territorial integrity of the country?
So what in effect can you do? 😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏

  6. Oh my bad, I get it now. it's their fault that they got killed, not the inability of this lazy and incompetent man (and his government) to protects it's citizens...why did Y'all not say that right upfront.

    3. Before investing your emotions on unnecessary insults , do you know if the standard procedure is for the Army to give clearance for people to go to that area. I am not supporting anybody, but it is a war zone. The MO should be different. Possibly the government is lying because they are always lying and blaming others for their failures. But there is very slim possibility that the government is telling the truth.

  16. If the farmers had other options would they have gone to farm there? Are these people aware that clearance ought to be gotten to till the soil?

Is that the justification on why the service chiefs shouldnt wallow their heads in shame and resign. It is only in Nigeria that crimes of such magnitude that exposes a leader's incapacity will be swept under the rugs and the leaders will not resign as a show of sober reflection. No, the will hold on to power so that they can continue to steal. How are we sure the funds for ammunition Dasuki was claimed to have siphoned isnt still being shared by these wicked service chiefs?

If it was their children, will they be happy? Local farmers that have no means of livelihood, no government to rely on are slained in the most horrendous manner, execution style and these wicked people cant even keep quiet out of shame if they have nothing sensible to say. Lauretta Onochie will not talk now, all the northern governors have suddenly gone dumb, even the IGP has gone on official duty exile that he can only come back active if Rahama Sadau wears topless abi shey na backless. Where are the Arewa forum writing letter upandan, they are dumb. Even Hisbau police that can destroy bottles of beer, or is their portfolio exempted from protecting lives and properties of northerners.

Let me just assume that this is photoshop because the thought that it is true is sickening.....

    God help Nigeria

How can anyone with a conscience and love for the people say things like this when 43 people just lost their lives in the most gruesome way.I don’t know If a lot of you guys saw the pictures of these innocent people with their heads severed from and placed on their bodies. In a sane country,Buhari and the security chiefs would’ve resigned for failing in their duty to secure the lives and properties of Nigerians but there they are continuing to enjoy tax payers money.I’m just tired of this country already.

  37. From what l have read in the dailies, they knew the attack was going to happen and they called the phone numbers the military gave out to beg for help. But the military failed them. This is not fundamentally different from the kidnapping of chibok girls. On the night those girls were kidnapped, the military was called severally but they simply refused to help, claiming they didn't have the military hardwares to help. Some of us, our friends or neighbours may have experienced this too. You call the police during an active armed robbery operation, the police will tell you they are on their well or they don't have operational vehicles. Sometimes an hour or more after the operation you see the police strolling in, blowing sirens

All governments since the end of the civil war, including the current government have been budgeting hundreds of billions for the military and the police. Unfortunately, the money went into private pockets. No effort was made to equip the military and police with modern weapons. See the guns our military and police shamelessly carry in the streets of Nigeria.
