The House made the submission during plenary in Lagos after the Bill had scaled through the second reading through a voice votes.
.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the new title of the Bill submitted by the state government is "Unlawful Societies and Cultism (Prohibition) Bill, 2020".
.
The Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, said the punishment was to further prohibit unlawful societies and cultism in the state, and for other connected purposes.
.
"Parents of cultists found guilty of cultism in the state might be liable for punishment, if the Bill for a law to provide for the prohibition of unlawful societies and cultism in Lagos and for connected purposes is passed.
.
"Though, we will also differentiate between the types of cultism in the country so that we won’t solve one problem and create another.
.
"We need to look at the way and manner weapons are used. The existing law should be seriously looked into," Obasa said.
.
Contributing, Majority Leader of the House, Sanai Agunbiade (Ikorodu I), said that sponsors of cultism could not be captured under the Bill.
.
Agunbiade said that some of the cult groups had their sponsors.
@pulsenigeria235
What if the parents have no idea their kids are cultists?
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts too, the law does not make sense to me
DeleteAs in, no sense at all. They keep bringing up different rubbish, calling it "laws", when there are other issues to deal with, eg our tif tif politicians.
DeleteUseless law
DeleteThey can start by convicting every family member of public fund looters aka people in government. So that your family will rat you out when you start your greedy stashing.
Stupid people. Always acting backwards.
Punish a parent for the actions of an adult?
I repeat, they are all useless. Zero brain function
Mtschewee
As a parent, you should know. That is what parenting is about for as long as the child lives under your roof.
DeleteMtschwwwwwww..... this politicians should stop being annoying...
DeletePray tell how you will know what your child is doing in the university when It is not like the child is coming home to you every day.
DeleteDid my parents know everything I did in the university? Did yours know?
This is quite senseless and laughable.
Does this even make any sense? Which kind country be this bikonu?
ReplyDeleteOro kpesi je,oro di hmm.
ReplyDeleteRubbish law. A parent shouldn't be held accountable for a useless child. Some children are evil naturally and grow up to be evil adults we see today, so are products of environment and society. How about you guys arrest the sponsor of cultism and their founders? The stupid founders will say it was for a good cause, arrest them,if they didnt start it, it won't have existed. Evil people.
ReplyDeleteThis people sha like misbehaving. What should happen to parents of corrupt politicians???
ReplyDeleteWhat of children of those who embezzle govt funds... Awon were
ReplyDeleteIs it the parents that committed the crime?
ReplyDeleteSo an oblivious parent will be guilty of a crime his/her adult child (who maybe lives away from home) committed? I guess mens rea is out the window.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Some children do not even go home through out the semester so I am wondering how the poor parents are supposed to know what they are up to.
DeleteA zoo society can only make zoo laws. So this Mudashiru guy is still speaker after all the expose? How can you hold a parent culpable when their child decides to be mischievous? Why must everything we do be zoo-like?
ReplyDeleteMr. Hippopotamus please when are you leaving this our zoo for us? Because I believe immediately you leave this zoo you will turn to a human being.
DeleteThanks anon 09:25, at least let him stop being an animal for once.
DeleteWhy purnish their parents ,this one no follow abeg
ReplyDeleteNa wa oo
ReplyDeleteWhy?
ReplyDeleteMisplaced priority. Confused politicians.
ReplyDeleteNibo?
ReplyDeleteAre you guys fine at all?
What is the meaning of this rubbish
ReplyDeleteFor a child who is up to 18years and has the right to make or take whatever decision crosses his mind without parental guidance?
ReplyDeleteI'm beginning to think Ambode was right concerning the mental health of this nigga right here..
See how they avoided adding their sponsors and patrons cos they're the ones behind the whole ish..
Kids of politicians who are found guilty of corruption should also be jailed with their parents..
Blessings
Some of these cultists are as young as fourteen going about maiming people in the name of initiation. Some of them are even girls. It is a huge problem that is about to explode. The parents have a role to play as some of them neglect their duties as parents and even protect them. It is not enough to impregnate someone or get pregnant for the sake of proving you are virile or fertile. Parenting is a job and this will encourage parents to be vigilant. A county in the U.S fines the parents of cyber bullies so long as they are under the same roof. This is a step in the right direction.
DeleteYou guys in that assembly must be on crack. People should be held accountable for their decisions. Some parents do their best but they kids just won't heed.
ReplyDeleteChannel those heads into making productive bills.
These lawmakers lack sense, if the parents of cultists are jailed alongside their children then parents and children of politicians caught embezzling public fund should also go to jail with them. Ah Ah! How dumb can this politicians be?
ReplyDeleteThis does not make sense to me, why punish the parents for the crime of their children?
ReplyDeleteParents?
ReplyDeleteLagosians Don suffer.
First it was ban on Gokada and co.
Now, it is witch-hunting of Under and co.
And then, this nonsense law.
E be like say una just want justify una gathering.
Will the Children of politicians be punished for their parent's embezzlement?
Uncle Akin, we are sorry Sir. We should have listened to you.
God please may our children not being us calamity, in Jesus mighty name Amen
ReplyDeleteThis one don dey pray 😂. Smdh
DeleteSo Obasa can talk over this, they use the same cultist during election to snatch ballot boxes, ask Obasa who his political boys are in Agege,is it not the same Awawa and one million boys working for him 🤷🤷🤷 Talk is really cheap.
ReplyDeleteThis law makes no sense 🤔
ReplyDeleteThis is a reflection of the mentality of these so called law makers. In Nigeria, a person who has attained the age of 18 years is considered an adult. The dictionary definition of an adult is "a person who is fully grown and developed." By implication, a fully grown and developed individual is responsible for his/her actions and choices, no? So, riddle me this, how on earth can a parent or parents be held accountable for the decisions of a fully grown and developed individual? For this absurdity to make even the most remote sense, the legal age of an adult in Nigeria should be changed to 25 years.
ReplyDeleteIt is presumed that the AVERAGE age of entry into university is 18 years. Most cultists get initiated at university, So are parents now expected to move into hostels or other off campus accommodations in order to monitor their children's extracurricular activities? Aren't they aware that parents can raise godly children who, unfortunately, cross over to the dark side due to peer pressure or sheer curiosity, both of which are not fault of the parents?
Even God, the Almighty, allows and respects free will, but these misguided individuals want to turn an already compromised country into a Banana republic. This is an affront to common sense and a serious breach on the fundamental human rights of Nigerians guaranteed by the Constitution of The Federal Republic of Nigeria. Unless the parents of cultists are complicit in the choice to become a cultist or are accomplices before or after the fact, they can in no way share the liability of their children's choices. This is an abdication of common sense and common decency. You don't chop off your hand because your manicure wasn't done right. If they are overwhelmed by the activities of cultists, they should go back to the drawing board and come up with a solution that is more practical and less moronic.
This is laughable. Obasa that is a cultist, a sponsors of Awawa boys. This law won't fly because it will come back to hurt the law maker. Awon oloriburuku law breaker!
ReplyDeleteHand go touch all of them
DeleteWatch and see
Well secondary school and even primary school kids are joining cult now. Maybe this will force parents to pay more attention to their kids to know what they are doing. Any child over 18 though should be solely responsible except the parent is involved in their criminal activities.
ReplyDeleteA parent should report with a disclaimer dated and timed to be presented at the time of request if ward is a suspect. Otherwise, nail the parents to the cross for raising a menace to the society.
