Former Falcons Goalkeeper Ann Chiejine Recalls An Event That Made Her Sad For Years...

Former Super Falcons goalkeeper, Ann Chiejine, says Nigeria’s 7-1 loss to host United States at the 1999 Women’s World Cup made her sad for years.

Chiejine conceded six goals in the first half following an own goal from defender Ifeanyi Chiejine and strikes from Margaret Hamm, Tiffany Milbrett, Kristine Lilly, Anne Akers and Cynthia Parlor. Milbrett completed the rout, bagging her brace in the second half.

Twenty-one years after, the former Falcons assistant coach says she still feels bad about the encounter.

“We played against the US women’s team at the 1999 World Cup and we were defeated 7-1,” the 46-year-old told The PUNCH.

“That’s one of our heaviest defeats at the global stage, despite being African champions. It made me very sad for many years.”

Chiejine also recalled with great delight the Falcons win over Cameroon in the final of the 1996 African Women’s Cup of Nations.

She added, “As in all human endeavours, we have our best moments and the worst too. It was great playing for the national team, yet it was not all smooth-sailing all the way. Everything in life cannot go your way every time. I also had my best moments with the team too.

“When we won the 1996 African Women’s Championship, I was on the moon. We defeated Cameroon in that final. It was great. I was very happy and to cap it all, qualification for the Women’s World Cup in 1999 was massive for me.

“We went and represented our country and it was really massive for us.”

  3. the truth is, we do most of our living inside our heads... all the them say them say is right inside the head, all the insecurities and what people will think is right there. so if you want to live a healthy life, renovate and rearrange the house in your head first, then ur reality will be sweeter.
