South Africa’s public schools will close again for a month from Monday to limit the spread of coronavirus as the country grapples with surging infections, President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Thursday.
.
The country has now recorded 408,052 coronavirus cases, the fifth-highest in the world. More than 6,000 people have died from the virus.
.
Rising infections have caused concern among teaching staff, with unions calling on the government to revoke its decision to reopen schools for certain grades in June.
.
“Cabinet has decided today that all public schools should take a break for the next four weeks,” Ramaphosa said during an address to the nation, adding that the academic year that is due to end in December would be extended.
.
Schools will be closed from 27 July and scheduled to reopen on August 24.
.
“We have taken a deliberately cautious approach to keep schools closed during a period when the country is expected to experience its greatest increase in infections,” Ramaphosa said.
.
The president also announced a “historic” R500 billion ($30 billion) social relief and economic support package to fund the health response and assist “those in greatest need”.
Nawa o. Really serious indeed.
ReplyDeleteVery serious indeed. Our government should better leave students are home for now.

DeleteOyo State Governor needs to learn from this.

ReplyDeleteSaw it on the news. Even the groups that were clamouring for schools to open went mute.
ReplyDeleteThis is really serious, that's why federal government is cautious about opening up schools .safety first , π¦
ReplyDeleteEducation is key but being alive is more important. Countries with high death rate should just forget about this year's academic session esp. students in junior classes. The junior and senior waec students may proceed with their exams with the necessary precautions.
ReplyDeleteWhen this corona virus dust settles and there is a vaccine, schools can begin to reopen.
God, please heal the world.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm. This is serious
ReplyDeleteNigeria government, please defer the reopening of schools till next year.
ReplyDeleteIf they like they should reopen schools tomorrow. Its the students that go to school that will die and not the ones that are protected at home by their parents.
DeleteWhat kind of disease is this
ReplyDeleteO God please have mercy on us
This is serious oooo. God save us
ReplyDeleteThis is serious oooo. God save us
ReplyDeleteThis is getting more serious
ReplyDeleteThis is the fear we all have especially as parents. Oyo state government should be prepared o, it's a daunting task managing kids and social distancing. They better do their homework well. Whenever Lagos state make it's own decision to open, I will decide on where I stand.
ReplyDeleteKeep your kids at home whether the government opens schools or not. Get them learning aids while at home. It's better they repeat classes than being 6feet below. #Godforbid.
DeleteThanks Sucre, my kids'school run online classes so they are fully occupied. They have been able to cover the third term syllabus and are about to start exams. I believe they will propose online option when schools open for the next section, so we'll see how it goes.
DeleteMy advice to Nigerian students, find something doing from now till December because school is likely not to resume till next year, instead of waiting on this clueless government, get busy and not waste the remaining five 5 months, peace✌️
ReplyDeleteWow. This is so so serious . Please schools should stay shut even in Nigeira until this pandemic is over. Better to stay alive and uneducated than be dead while pursuing education
ReplyDeleteSincerely I think Nigeria government shouldnt reopen school until 2021. Let's parents look after their wards for the main time. Na person wey dey alive dey hustle for education o
ReplyDeleteHmm ,Nigeria government take note o, no resumption until the curve is straighten please o, and I think government should step into the case of private school teachers, all the money they are looting can be used to pay them their monthly salary, or how do they want them to survive???? Plenty of them are going through a lot, I know a couple who both works in private school, thank God the husband is not a lazy man, he's now driving keke, very gentle man , it is well
ReplyDeleteThis is scary!
ReplyDeleteGood idea, safety first
Na who dey alive dey go school.
God help us and heal the World.
Lord, help us find the vaccine for this thing.
ReplyDeleteAbi now.That man is clueless
DeleteThis is serious o. Oyo state govt should better postpone the resumption to next year.
ReplyDeleteHeal the world O Lord.
SERIOUS. And some people don't believe this virus is real.
ReplyDeleteGod is really shaking the world! Please God protect your childrenππ½ππ½ππ½
ReplyDeleteAbeg they should allow final years students finish school.. staying at home is frustration itself.
ReplyDeleteStaying alive is better
DeleteNa wah o. God pls intervene
ReplyDeleteHmmmmm God abeg save us oooo
ReplyDeleteOpen which schools? Mine are not moving an inch, the provisions made for their e-learning and skills acquisitions are enough for now.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile,if you measured your kids at the beginning of the lockdown, measure them again, they are longgg, outgrown their school garbs and likely lighter in complexion, haha.
CORONA VIRUS,stay away.
X.p, so true. Am sure of getting new school uniforms once school resumes. What skill can a 10yr, 8yrs and 6yrs learn , they are through with their online promotional exams. I wanted piano class, the person said 50k per child. I don't have 150k biko.
DeleteGod help us all!
ReplyDeleteThey should better leave school reopening in this Nigeria, cos children do not understand social distancing oh, they would have finished hugging before remembering
