Pastor Oyedepo Says Not Tithing Invokes Financial Curse - Your View!

Pastor Oyedepo hammered on the importance of tithing and I have nothing against tithing but i just want to know if there is any Bible passage that backs up this curse (for those who will argue).........

What does he mean by Financial curse? If someone is already under a financial curse, how will they pay their tithes?

Is it right for a Pastor to concentrate on this aspect of winning souls for Christ?

What is your view on this please!!!

    1. In all honesty, when i went into meditation years ago, what i understand is the power GENEROSITY has over a human being. I don't really care much about how it is interpreted in the bible but I know that GENEROSITY is a law of existence that is binding on you wether you are a Christian, atheists, Muslim, whatever you believe in.

Now, this generosity is NOT limited to money. It goes all the way to your time, your ability to love and use kind words, to the nature around you both animals and vegetation, to family, friends, strangers and foes.

Tithing on the other hand, I DO NOT BELIEVE there is any man alive today qualified to collect tithe. Tithing was to be paid by the 11 tribes of Israel to the tribe of Levi who is the only tribe God did not give inheritance to. That tithe was meant to sustain them because they were priests and forbidden to work except in the temple. The tribe of Levi has long gone extinct and I am not of the 11 tribes of Israel, I am Nigerian in far away Africa, so....?

    1. I do not agree with Pst Oyedepo and how he relayed this. It simply puts fear, guilt and pressure on people to pay their tithes, and that's not what God wants.

God desires we give from our hearts, not out of compulsion or coercion.

I pay my tithes because it is an act of worship for me when I give God 10% of what He has given me. I do it because I love Him.

Another reason is because the church uses the money for God's work. So I give to propagate the gospel.

As for financial curses and all, I disagree. But,is there a blessing that comes through honouring God with your tithe? Yes.

Pls if you are tithing with the wrong motives, please kindly stop tithing until the revelation comes to your spirit. Whatever we must do for God must be done in love. It must come from our hearts.

      Don't be pressured to give.

It's just that these Pastors select the parts of the Bible that line their pockets and fill their account forgetting that TITHING IS NEITHER SALVATION NOR GUARANTEE TO MAKE HEAVEN.

It is EASIER FOR A CAMEL TO PASS THROUGH THE EYE OF A NEEDLE THAN FOR A RICH MAN TO ENTER THE GATES OF HEAVEN.

Will all these Pastors that chase tithes and extort God's people make heaven with the weight of worldly wealth they have acquired BESETTING them (dragging them down)?

    7. Proper bull crap, study carefully the new testament @ Rhapsodylady, the church gave willingly, not begrudgingly, such as they have, you dont GIVE tithe, you PAY tithe, the operational word there being pay, which means out of neccessity and a must! If you think tithing originated with Abraham, then you havent quite studied your bible, tithing was a pagan practice of paying to whichever god, a tenth of the spoils of war, which Abraham continued to do when he was called out from amongst the heathens, no new testament believer should be tithing rather they should be worshiping God, not out of compulsion, but out of love and a grateful heart with their substance as much as God has blessed them with!

  7. This tithing argument is becoming exhausting. Pastors should let people give from their hearts and not because of guilt. Besides, the average Nigerian is struggling to survive this period and doesn't need the extra guilt.

Tithe must not be paid in church. You can use your tithe to help the less privileged e.g. buy them food, clothes, set them up in a business if you can, pay for their hospital bills e.t.c. and as sure as the sun rises and sets each day, God will never forsake you or not bless you. This I know for a fact. What you may consider little goes a long way for many so use your tithe to better the lives of the needy.

If you haven't been paying it before the financial problem, your pastor will tell you the cause is because you don't pay tithe.

As for your question, start paying from the 5th month. You can't pay for what you didn't earn.

Anyone that wants to pay tithe should pay but don't believe that curse of a thing that will befall anybody that didn't pay it.

    5. Tithe is 1/10 of your income or increase. If your income is 0 naira, 1/10 of 0 is 0. If your income is #500, your tithe is #50. 1/10 means you divide your income or increase into ten parts and take one part and pay. For business owners, you tithe on your increase or profit and not on the capital plus profit. This means that if you sell a good at #1000 and your profit is #100, your tithe on that good will be #10.

I was tithing, giving offerings and contributions...things changed yes but when I give to orphans, widows or the poor, blessings rained.

I decided to be giving only offerings to the church and my tithe to people who need it when the same church refused to help when I needed urgent financial assistance for medical help.

Meanwhile I contributed for others, we were even scammed at a point. But they refused and the reason was that my late sis wasn't a member so they can't help and that was the beginning of the end for me.

I just give offerings and my service and go. No more contributions or participations ...I just faced God directly and told God this is what I want to be doing from now on with my Tithe and he proved himself.

To each his/her own tho but this is mine.

All I know is that each time I tithe on any money that comes into my hands,I ALWAYS have double or most times, more than what I gave. If I lack,my best bet is to give something,my time to someone,my time in prayer,as little as gifting someone offering in church. Even the time given to encourage someone, God ALWAYS surprises me thereafter.

I have not seen the person that will come to convince me otherwise on something that has been working for me.

My mindset is also that when I tithe, the money I would have used for health issues, police case for my family members, armed robbery attack, all kinds of troubles,my gift and tithe will speak for me and most times when I do not tithe,it's not always pleasant.

  23. SO TITHE WAS A TRUBUTE?
Yes it was! Under the Pentateuch (Mosaic Law), payment of tithes to the tribe of Levi by eleven other tribes was a law unto itself. Why is this so?
After the twelve tribes settled down for business in Canaan, the Levites were the only tribe totally excluded from land inheritance. Apparently, their priesthood position was vantage enough and automatically disqualified them. This was reinstated by a declaration made known by Joshua to all the children of Israel: “The Levites have no portion among you, for the priesthood of the LORD is their heritage.” (Joshua 18:7). RSV.
So by priesthood default, the Levites became tenants in their own country! After this dawned finally on their elders, they put heads together and devised a stratagem. And what they came up with was ingenious enough! So they approached Joshua and entreated him with their masterstroke:
“The LORD commanded through Moses that we be given cities to dwell in, along with their pasture lands for our cattle.”
So by command of the LORD the people of Israel gave to the Levites cities and pasture lands out of their inheritance.” (Joshua 21:2-3).
The prayers of the Levites were granted. This reprieve has two implications. First, the strategic spread of the Levites to all the nooks and crannies of the county means that they can be easily reached when it comes to collection of the tithes. Second, it also means that whether a Levite was ordained as a priest or not, he or she was fully entitled by heritage to receive tithe. So from this, we can see it clearly that tithing was a moral obligation, and has nothing whatsoever to do with Judaism, talk less of Christianity!

The only flip side is that they never became original land owners. That condition has prevailed till today.
Nevertheless, the compensation given to the Levites was more than enough — 10% of labors of eleven other tribes? So whether we call it tithe, rent or tribute, the principle remain the same. But alas, that unholy rent collection system was what the early Christians tried to justify (See epistle to Romans chapter 1 – 10). Was their argument not grotesque then, even now? Surely, to transfer a civic duty to the level of religious obligation was height of hypocrisy.

  25. If you want to tithe, do so because you believe in it, as a commandment from God which has not been overridden by subsequent scriptures. Don’t do it because you think it’s necessary for your salvation (our righteousness are but filthy rags in His presence) or because you think it’s necessary for wealth to come your way (world events haven’t proved that that is correct). In this world, you can make money and be legitimately wealthy without paying tithe to the church.
I believe one should ultimately do what one believes in. There are good reasons to pay your tithe - ignore Freeze’s comment about Pastors not being from the tribe of Levi🙄. If nothing at all, tithe contributes to the upkeep and maintenance of the church premises which you go to everyday to worship. It also helps towards the Church’s works towards the sick, needy, imprisoned, etc.
Giving ALWAYS comes with blessings, this works for everyone, Christian, Muslim, any other religion or atheist; it’s a law of life and this will also work for you should you choose to give your tithes in the Church.
The doctrine of tithing can NEVER be faulted, as it adheres to both spiritual and earthly principles but saying those who don’t tithe are under a financial curse/bondage is false unless financial curse has another meaning.
People who want to pay tithe shouldn’t be discouraged. The problem with tithing is ACCOUNTABILITY. You see church leaders in ostentatious living and can directly see the impact of your tithe in their personal lives, they aren’t even scrupulous enough to maintain a moderate lifestyle, they buy the best your tithe can afford and then give testimony of God’s Grace in their lives!
Biblically, tithe is for the Priests(as they didn’t have land allocated to their tribe), Widows, Orphans and the needy (that there may be food in the House of God). I would say if you cannot see evidence that your Church carries out programs like these with your tithes consider apportioning and giving to these groups yourself. Yes, this is not in the Bible, but that is what I will do.

    1. Thank you. I agree that the problem people have with tithes stems from accountability of church leaders. If the tithes are used appropriately for building the kingdom of God and not to enrich some selected few then we won't have these arguments. I know I belong to some professional organizations where I pay my dues to help the organisations run effectively. So also it is with my tithe. I am happy to pay my tithe when I see that it is truly used to build up the kingdom of God on earth.

  26. If you want to tithe, do so because you believe in it, as a commandment from God which has not been overridden by subsequent scriptures. Don’t do it because you think it’s necessary for your salvation (our righteousness are but filthy rags in His presence) or because you think it’s necessary for wealth to come your way, world events haven’t proved that that is correct.
32. My issues On tithes is not the paying of it, but who receives it.
In the Scriptures the Lord was clear that the tithes belongs to :
    1. The widows
    2. The orphans
    3. The strangers
    4. The Levites -in the New Testament dispensation; those who work on the gospel
without any other form of livelihood.

    Here are the Scriptures:
Deut. 14:28At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates: 29And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the STRANGER, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come,
and shall eat and be satisfied; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest.
    See also Deut. 26:12-15, Matt. 23:23, 25: 31-46, Acts 6:1-6, 1 Tim. 5:2-9

  33. I don't pay Tithes cos I don't know where my money goes to. If God was coming to take it and go back up, I would. I don't understand where they keep the money I give. In my opinion is that I need to see the money put to good use. Use it to pay for school fees of the less privilege in the Church, feed the poor, do charity works cos Gods not coming down to take the 10% I paid. I don't want anyone getting fat on my money, buying more houses when all they need is one good house and in opulence on my sweat. Christ did not live in flamboyance. So, no thanks I don't pay. Muslims and organs who are blessed don't put money in envelopes and the same God blesses them. If you are looking at your neighbour who has not eaten as you walk by with that envelop in hand to go dump in a bag that has no accountability. Know ye now that he'll awaits you cos you are a wicked person.

NO Pastor tells you to tithe according to Deuteronomy 14 28-29 - "At the END OF EVERY THREE years, BRING al THE TITHES OF THAT YEARS PRODUCE and STORE IT IN YOUR TOWNS , so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the FOREIGNERS , the FATHERLESS and the WIDOWS *WHO LIVE IN YOUR TOWNS MAY COME and EAT and BE SATISFIED*,* and so that THE LORD YOUR GOD MAY BLESS YOU IN ALL *the work of your hands.*

NO PASTOR IS A LEVITE or PRIEST "to collect tithes from the other 11 Jewsish Tribes." WE ARE GENTILES SAVED BY GRACE.

    2. Jesus Christ did not command his disciples to pay tithes.

    3. The Apostles did not teach the early Christians to pay tithes rather to make weekly collections for believers in lack and in other locations. 1 Cor 16v1-3
    4. All believers shared their wealth and goods in common, nobody lacked. Acts 2vs44-45, Acts 4v32

    5. Mary Magdalena, Joanna wife of Chuza, Susanna and many others- These women were helping to support them out of their own means. Luke 8vs2-3

    8. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be given to you according to the measure you use in your giving. " Luke 6v38

    9. Give as you want to reap "Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out of regret or compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver." 2 Cor 9v6-8

11 So IF THE PRIESTHOOD OF LEVI, ON WHICH THE LAW WAS BASED, COULD HAVE ACHIEVED THE PERFECTION GOD INTENDED , WHY DID GOD NEED TO ESTABLISH A DIFFERENT PRIESTHOOD, **with a priest in the order of Melchizedek instead of the order of Levi and Aaron?**

12 AND IF THE PRIESTHOOD IS CHANGED , THE LAW MUST ALSO BE CHANGED TO PERMIT IT ?

18 Yes, THE OLD REQUIREMENT ABOUT THE PRIESTHOOD WAS SET ASIDE BECAUSE IT WAS WEAK. 19 For THE LAW NEVER MADE ANYTHING PERFECT. But NOW WE HAVE CONFIDENCE IN A BETTER HOPE, *through which we draw near to GOD.*

Jesus rebuked the JEWISH RELIGIOUS LEADERS FOR TITHING IN HYPOCRISY.
Matthew 23:23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, *and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith.* It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others.

  40. When you read Malachi chapter 3,it talks about the curse that comes when you don't pay your tithe. Pastor oyedepo didn't say it from his head. As long as you are a Christian and belong to the body of Christ, you must pay your tithe to the church you belong to;so that there will be meat in the house of God. There are blessings attached to other givings like giving to the poor, giving to beggars and the rest. But giving your tithe attract it's own blessings. Do you know what it means for God to rebuke devourer for your sake? Christainity is not a religion.
its the Life of Christ in you. You are citizen of heaven. If you live in Rome,be ready to pay tax to the Romans so as to benefit from the good things that Will come from there. As a Christian, be ready to receive goodies as you pay your tithe. Don't listen and follow those who don't pay. It's not everyone that call Lord!!! That are truly drawing from God. Some know the source of their income and you don't know when the devourer will come or when the curse will start manifesting. John d Rockefeller is a tither. And he became the wealthiest Man in America's history. A true christain should pay tithe

The bible says we should tithe so that there shall be food in his house not in pastors house, during Christmas in winners they will still announce that members should bring foodstuffs for the needy to church for church to share, WD pay transport offering differently.then one will ask what is happening to tithe and offerings? We contributed to buy the new chair we are using by ourselves,

    1. If after faithfully paying your tithe, you are still asked to bring money for food stuff, transportation, chair and all sorts then you should definitely and politely ask what tithes are used for. Just like some comments here pointed out, we have a problem of accountability and transparency in our churches. Or if you can't ask, don't pay more than your tithe. Imagine if all what the church receives is just the tithe and nothing else, they will sit up and be better in the administration of tithes. Stop indulging their greed and iniquity.

  44. When armed robbers visited my hostel while I was in the university, I was so confused as to what I should do.. While pacing up and down my tiny room,so afraid and I decided to get out some money out of my box to give instead of letting them have to get it themselves when they eventually come to my room.. I then ran into another crossroad of getting the money out because the room was dark,I won't be able to see the number combination for the box.. While in this confused state, I heard a still voice within me saying"You can't pay your tithe to Me and as well as to the armed robbers"Instantly, fear left me and I sat on my bed waiting for them to come knocking on my door.. It was at this point I realized that my door wasn't locked. I forgot to lock it but I still wasn't afraid.. The thieves never came to my room, they went to the other rooms but mine was spared. That was the first time my neighbour who was always scare of sleeping alone in her room slept in mine, this was the reason why I slept off without locking my door. We always go to her room to pass the night there, but on that fateful day we slept in my room. This is so scriptural, because Bishop Oyedepo wasn't the one who reminded me about my tithing, when the devourers( armed robbers) came calling but that still voice on the 16th of August,2006 was the voice of the Holy Spirit. Ever since I have been paying my tithe in accordance to Malachi3:10-12, God have been rebuking devourers( untimely deaths, armed robbers, sickness, failures etc) for my sake.. It's only those who love you that will tell you the truth. Papa hit the nail on the head.. God bless you Papa, and madam Stella or p up the good work.. God bless you ma..

    1. Wait. So you're saying that God protected you just because you tithe???????? Are you serious?

See. Let me tell you one wrong thing that Christians do. We go like "thank God because others were robbed but I wasn't"
Don't use the ill luck of others as a basis for your Thanksgiving.
Even unbelievers are spared in some ill experiences and some times, Christians are affected.

I'm not saying miracles don't happen. But they happen to everyone because God loves everyone equally. The only miracle unique to believers is the miracle of eternal life.

Some tithers in your compound were also robbed. It doesn't mean you're more loved by God and it doesn't mean that your tithes were more acceptable than them

No one is cursed for not paying tithes. In fact, as a believer, you cannot be cursed.
