Chronicle Of Blog Visitor Narrative...

STAND ALONE NARRATIVE
UNABLE TO PRONOUNCE WORDS

Good afternoon BVs

Thank you Stella for creating this beautiful community.

I have an issue that is seriously bothering me. After reading the post about the bad habit of your partner. I decided to send this.

I have a bad habit and that is, I find it hard to pronounce some words. I read a lot of Novels but yet I find it difficult to pronounce some words and even to write them. I know I am smart and speaks well too but I don't just know what the problem is.

I am married to a super intelligent doctor, He has tried to help me so many times but I just give up easily. I know my husband gets really pissed off about it sometimes especially when I pronounce a word wrongly in front of our kids...he never corrects me in their presence anyway. He's learning to live with it. we have been married for 7 years. I really want to become better.

I can remember when I was quite small I found it hard to pronounce "principle", can remember my siblings laughing 😁 at me because of it. I guess that was the beginning of my matter.

How can I help myself to learn and become better. (Hubby told me recently how he was ashamed when I pronounce a word wrongly during our night devotion...i felt for him and myself) We laughed about it but it is time to change.

Practical steps would be appreciated greatly.
Thank you lovely people ❤

*I think you have a medical condition oh....i am sure cos i have seen a documentary on something like this ...Your hubby is a doctor and should know!

  1. This here just reminded me of a young lady yesterday pronouncing Pandemic as Pendemic. They had to correct her for over 7times but even at that, she still didn't master it.

I sincerely dont know what to advice than to say, keep practicing.

    1. I've got the "H" factor and little problem pronouncing some small small words and my children enjoy it and it extremely cracks them up, so when I'm in a good mood they always ask me to pronounce words in Nigerian accent so they can laugh and fall off the chair or imitate me.
Na dem sabi because I always claim to speak English before they were born and acknowledge the fact that I'm a graduate of a prestigious University in Nigeria called Unilag πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

Maybe you should get a tutor who will take you down to elimentary level and start all over again. No shame in it.
That's why it's good to give your kids good education. When you have a solid foundation, education wise, you are good to go.
Don't let your kids start correcting your poor/wrong pronoucations before you do the needful.

    6. Anon 15:52, for someone who Dyslexic, This makes it hard to recognize short, familiar words or to sound out longer words. It takes a lot of time for a person with dyslexia to sound out a word.
But for Dysarthria is when there is difficulty in speaking caused by brain damage or brain changes later in life(which I do not think this poster has got). It is a nervous system disorders and conditions that cause facial paralysis (tongue or throat muscle weakness), and some certain medications also can cause it.

This problem is characterized by ones inability to pronounce certain letters thereby affecting your pronunciations.

If you can, find a pathologist and get professional help. Otherwise, read up on speech problems and follow some of the suggestions as it pertains to your case.

Good luck and keep your chin up.

The way I speak, my composure, body language while at it everything changed.

I think you should start with your mirror at home or have your siblings or kids or anyone sit and try giving a speech. One, two... Three, etc you would definitely see a change.

  18. Poster you might be suffering from tongue-tie called Ankyloglossia. People with this medical condition find it difficult pronouncing words properly. Your husband should know better and learn to live with it. He should stop those unnecessary corrections and accept you for who you're. His constant corrections and disgust at your pronunciations can lead you to develop low self esteem. Nobody is perfect. As it is now there's nothing you can do about it than to learn to live with your conditions and people around you should show you more love instead of constantly pulling you down claiming they're correcting you.

My mom is like the poster. At first we thought she was pronouncing words wrong to be funny but eventually we found out she wasn’t trying to be funny. She’s literate.
We Eventually stopped correcting her cause well.... we understand what she’s trying to say. But she herself started correcting her words by talking slowly when it gets to words she finds hard pronouncing.

  27. Poster, listen to english articles with accompanying mp3 on The VOA or BBC site or app. When you listen and read at the same time try to repeat after the reader whispering or not too loud at first. You can control the speed if they are too fast. Do this till you are comfortable to read out loud on your own according to what you heard. This technique is called shadowing.

Repeat the exercise for 90 of articles that please you to read for over 4 months to 1 year and beyond (with less training if you wish). You should read out loud 2 articles at least 3 times each day. Use your drive time, breakfast time etc don't wait for a special time the articles are just 3 mins or so. Also change the articles after 6 months.

This is a targeted approach at retraining your tongue to pronounce all words including those you know how to pronounce. It is better this way cos after a year you will notice once you open your mouth to speak your brain's default words pronunciation will sound like that of those BBC readers that pronounce words correctly. You won't have to conciously speak correctly.
