While some of the youths carried placards pleading that the lockdown be stopped, others shouted at the top of their voices that the lockdown was a harbinger of hunger, as they are very hungry with their families.
Yusuf Olakunle, one of the youths with the placards said, the situation was already getting out of hand, as he relied on whatever sales he makes from his shop to feed his family. He said since the beginning of the lockdown, it has become very difficult to feed his family, noting that his wife is now 7 months pregnant.
Another protester, who said he works with one of the contractors in Dangote refinery, said since the refinery stopped all contractors from working as a result of the federal government ordered lockdown, eating and feeding his family and siblings has been a very big issue.
He said: "I am the breadwinner of my family and I am a welder who works with one of the contractors in Dangote refinery. But, since this lockdown began, I don't have any work to do; hence there is no money to buy food for my family. I will rather be killed by the virus than die of hunger; the federal government should stop the lockdown."
The irate youths, who burnt used tires on the road, also set ablaze trucks and some company vehicles which ran into their procession.
Meanwhile the Onilekki of Lekki, HRM, Olumuyiwa Liasimm Ogunbekun appealed to the youths to be calm and law abiding as country is going through tough times as a result of COVID-19 pandemic; adding that the Dangote Refinery still remains their major source of daily earnings as more jobs are continuously created"
It would be recalled that the Federal Government of Nigeria four weeks ago imposed lockdown on the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos and Ogun states due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Meanwhile the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has advised the Federal Government to again extend the lockdown, which ends on Monday. This, the association said, would help to contain the rapid spread of the coronavirus disease.
It added that with the “exponential” rise in the number of cases recorded across the country daily, people should not see the lockdown as a punishment but a necessary measure to contain the spread of the deadly virus. It, however, stressed the need for fair distribution of the palliatives to cushion the hardship the restriction had caused Nigerians.
I'm guessing this was before the presidential speech.
ReplyDeletePeople are protesting in the United States and other countries. They are tired of being locked down. The lockdown is gradually easinng out and I foresee things returning to normal within May in Nigeria
ReplyDeletePeople are protesting in the US, in France etc, but, they are not setting properties on fire!
DeleteI am neither for or against the protest, but, destroying people's property, that I am totally against.
There should be room for peaceful protest.
Thanks ma'am ,you are very much on point,I don't understand the Nigerian mentality of attacking your fellow masses in times of protests
DeleteI already said it two days ago that people will revolt. They apparently aren't scared for their health but scared of hunger. The fact that some of us have a good life ,doesn't mean that we should turn blind eye to the plight of needy, how many people do you as an individual want to reach out to?the government ought to know better and reach out to those in need!
ReplyDeletePlease just wait. Wait till these same people catch the virus and see how blame will be laid on the govt for not doing enough. I have said it times without number, we have terrible leaders but our leaders are a reflection of our society. The strength of a leader is proportional to that of his/her weakest follower. For as long as we remain bad followers, we would continue to have bad leaders. Yes, the Govt has t done enough to cushion the effect of the lockdown but you try and share palliatives and see if your life won’t be at risk. It’s just sad
DeleteWell said anon
DeleteThe sad thing about you being killed by the virus is the innocent lives you will transmit it to before you die. So the FG should open up and put tens of millions at risk because you are suffering. What of the other ppl who want to live, why should your misery put those innocent ppl at risk?
ReplyDelete@Engraced,majority aren't protesting out of hunger(they are getting stipends from the government),they just want their freedom
DeleteThis is what you get when a vast majority of the populace are living from hand to mouth. How many countries did you see their citizens protest the lockdown?
ReplyDeleteI have seen US protest...seen Greece and South Africa. it is not peculiar just to Nigeria.
DeleteOkay thanks for the info @Engraced.
DeleteThese ones no get brain at all
ReplyDeleteBut setting properties on fire, protesting the government lockdown is not the right way to handle hunger!
ReplyDeleteThey are doing more harms to themselves. The virus is spreading like wildfire and people are dieing; this is not the time to be disobedient and arrogant about it.
They should go to Kano and look for work. I am sure with all the deaths happening there somebody is hiring. Mtschhw. Who want work to feed their families should head to Kano, they are hiring. If is even to bury the dead, there is work for you all in Kano.
DeleteI suggested how to feed this pple while keeping our environment clean.
ReplyDeleteI understand some persons situations is really bad and most of them depends on their daily earning income to survive.
ReplyDeleteBut this measure is not the way forward. Government should really try and assist more.
You wont really blame them totally. Most of them eat from hand to mouth! And you expect them to die of hunger???
ReplyDeleteGovt is to be blamed too! The poverty rate in the country is very high and after this one it will not only increase but alot will lost their jobs. Most company have decided to be paying most of their workers half salary. My company announced it yesterday. Atleast is better than nothing. This is the reason things ought to be in order.but now is the judgement for all of us. All we do is collect 5k and vote in thieves that will only care about their own pocket and family. Nigeria is not ready for all these yet.
The money they received should also be used to help the poor survive the lockdown. They collected a great sum of money plus lots of billionaires gave money. They should provide food at the least.
DeleteIf money had been spent to develop the nation and eradicate poverty instead of being used to line the pockets of billionaires the country would be better equipped to deal with this crisis. African leaders need to do better to move their countries towards prosperity for all.
I dnt support the destruction of govt property. That act should be condemned.
ReplyDeleteBurning of other people's properties won't solve anything, protests can be peacefully done
ReplyDeleteSupposing it was a war of guns every body would having being running for safety and no body will be thinking of hunger or family.
ReplyDeleteI just knew not would result to these. A government that don't care about the welfare of it's citizens. wicked people.
ReplyDeleteOMG!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd Yes they will still blame the government because they ought to have done better . You don't expect an hungry man to stay calm and watch his family die because of a virus. Hunger kills faster woman. You dont wear the shoes, don't blame them. "An hungry man is always an angry man". It is easy for you to stay at home because you buy data, probably have a cable TV and eat 3 square meal. I pray tables don't turn.
ReplyDeleteYou see ehn. We Nigerians are problematic and we really dont k ow what we want. Shey now the lockdown has been relaxed!!! Good people of SDK blog, i dont know any of u personally, ive been a blog reader for about 7years now (if im right) and i love you all cause i feel connected to u guys from reading ur comments and the funny ones light up my day. Pls be safe. Pls stay safe. Please i beg you. I dont want to loose anyone i care about. Pls stay safe.
ReplyDelete■Lape.

DeleteDestroying properties is not the way out. What happened to peaceful protests. Trust Nigerians, before you know it they will start breaking people's shops to steal their goods. They should match to their local govt headquarter Biko. Let the chairman give them the palliatives he collected from State govt.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't blame them, there's hunger in the country. but being violent about it would change nothing.
ReplyDeleteThe truth is that people are really hungry and can't continue to be on lockdown. This ought to be an eye opener to our leaders to make the system work, but will their greed and corrupt practices make them do the right thing?
ReplyDeleteBy the grace of almighty God,after this covid 19 drama, the full reality of our population explosion will dawn on us and we shall certainly reboot our blames and reset our mindset,I cry silently when I hear or see daily wage earners having between 5 and 7 kids living in cubicles
ReplyDeleteHighly unacceptable
