NNPC Reveals Cause Of Explosion In Lagos ....

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said the explosion which rocked Abule Ado Area of Lagos State was as a result of gas explosion.

There had been speculation that the explosion emanated from an NNPC pipeline but the NNPC Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Dr. Kennie Obateru, on Sunday evening refuted that claim.

In a statement on Sunday, the NNPC boss said investigations found that a truck hit some gas cylinders stacked in a gas processing plant located near the corporation’s system 2B Pipeline Right of Way which resulted in the explosion.

The explosion was so huge that it led to the collapse of nearby houses and damaged NNPC pipeline ...

Obateru added that the corporation had immediately stopped ongoing pumping operations on the Atlas Cove-Mosimi pipeline which was active at the time of explosion.

The release explained that NNPC had already mobilized its in-house combined team consisting of Health Safety Environment experts, Medical and Security personnel from its nearby Satellite Depot in Lagos, even as Lagos State Fire Service was also rallied to extinguish the fire.

The NNPC Group Managing Director, Mallam Mele Kyari, condoled with the victims of the incident, praying that God provides them succour at this hour.

    1. Good morning Cookie, out of respect for those that lost their lives, the injured and everyone involved, I didn't comment in other posts .

But, it seems it's important that I state something here. I know for a fact that government officials have come down hard on gas cylinder business owners. Yet a lot of them still put up their sales points in areas where they shouldn't be and without proper safety measures in place.

We can continue to curse out the authorities from now till tomorrow, but in such instances, we will continue to bear the cost of these infringements.

Let me digress by giving an example; the rains are coming. Yet we throw pure water satchets, empty water/ soft drink bottles, paper, gala nylon etc out of vehicles and the drains get clogged. When the rains come, we'll have floods. Some caused from these blockages, and then casualties. Who's to blame? The government? Like seriously?.

Communities that work are those that either love their neighbour or love themselves enough to want to live.

When we see stuff in our neighbourhoods that isn't right, let's report it. If not for the safety of others, at least for our own personal safety.

As we can see, at the end of the day, when shit happens, the innocent pay for it. For all we know, the owner of the gas cylinder business doesn't even live in that area.

May the souls of the departed rest in peace. Amen

    2. Valid point!
If anyone has a background in environmental sciences they would know the effects of non-biodegradable waste on the the ecosystem and ultimately humans.

      However, Nigerians are largely ignorant.
Are school children taught how to identify, separate, reuse and recycle wastes?

What about campaigns in Pidgin English to enlighten market women artisans and the street people (hawkers and area boys).

The government and private sector has much to do in enlightening the public on the effects and INCENTIVIZE recycling and reuse of these wastes.
They could ban the use of poly-bags (nylon), Styrofoam and Plastic disposal plates or apply fines/sanctions.

On another health note, do you know Nigeria does not have proper public conveniences. Open defecation and urination is common place YET OUR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND POLITICAL OFFICE-HOLDERS SEE THESE THINGS ABROAD.

A long way to a proper country.

    1. DON, thank you. I read your previous comments as well. Let those that have ears , hear and listen.

There's a video uploaded on another blog where a lady was filming the gas leak and running background commentary.

Maybe if she had called the emergency numbers or brought the attention of the street association to the leakage, the story would have been different.

But no, we prefer to be bystanders and videographers since we can't be bothered by other people's misfortunes.

Once again, till we actually practice what we read in our holy books; love thy neighbour, we will continue to groan and blame the government.

Life and living is a collective and deliberate exercise. Enough said.
