AGN President Emeka Rollas Defends Senator Elisha Abbo As Patron Of The Guild

In an interview on Plus TV , the president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Emeka Rollas has explained his stance on the controversy surrounding senator Elisha Abbo who was made patron of the guild after his colleagues Kate Henshaw and Hilda Dokubo called him out to explain why the 'slapping' senator is on the guild as Patron.

The interview ...

Rollas :I know the story they are raising,(Interrupted by the interviewer)

Interviewer: We saw the slap

Rollas: You saw the slap, did you also see the apology?

Interviewer: Yes we saw the apology which a lot of people are saying that the apology is not....

Rollas : See, it doesn't count, what we should be asking here is - Did he come out to apologize? Yes he did. Is the woman involved, did the woman say she didn't accept the apology in all of these that we are saying? For crying out loud, when I mentioned morality and legality, you ask us who is holier than Senator Abbo? There was a committee set up in the senate on this same matter and the committee did not convict him.

Is Actors guild a body to be used to do all of these? People should just go and sit down. There's no point sentimentalizing issues just maybe to drive a point. We know the stage where people who are fighting for women rights operate. Not within the confines where Actors guild is involved.

I don't want to mention names, but if we begin to dig into people's personal lives, honestly people who have mentioned these names, they may not even stand in the morality test, but I don't want to go that way.

All I am trying to say is that it is not enough for anybody who feels he is a member of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, that is if they are.
The difference between a star and a member, they are two different things.

You can be a star, but you are not a member of our guild.

Interviewer: Are Hilda Dokubo and Kate Henshaw members of your guild?

Rollas: We have to check the membership list, I do not know all the members, like I told you we have two million people, so you understand the point? What makes you a member is how much have you paid the guild in the last two years you have the guild's identity card as I am hanging.

If you are working and you have issues, how can the guild fight for you?
We must check your membership status and all of that.

So when you go on social media, something that you ought to settle in-house, I do not know whom you are trying to impress.

Unfortunately for whoever that has been shouting, decisions of an association, organization is not what you get from social media. Do you understand the point?

So these are issues I do not want to join issues with anybody.

*Well he has a point, they should have contacted him first to discuss this before bringing it on the social media...The social media should be when all else fails

  2. Story. He has collected money that he can’t refund that is why he can’t retrace his steps. If he has sense, he would know that the apology was like rubbing in the slap not from a sincere angle. This goes to show that Rollas is not far in character like the said Senator. Since he sees nothing wrong with all the brouhaha. The way he brushed it aside tels the type of person he is.

I wish they will vote to remove this Rollas.

    3. Hmmm, birds of a feather. Emeka has never pretended for once, never. Leadership in our clime really need to be overhauled and instituted with those who understand the import of the position they occupy. It's a great pity in this instance.

    4. No Stella, It is not the same thing.

The senator apologised after the video went viral. It would have made more sense If he had apologised to that lady before people started calling for his head or before the video went viral.

Apologising because you are genuinely sorry is different from apologising because people want you to.

These 2 men must be women beaters, irritants.

  3. How do we know that, they didn't discuss it with him first. I think these women involved are more matured than that.
He could be saying that to cover his wrong decision.
Besides, a leader listens to his followers when it's imperative.

  4. What the man did was very wrong, he has apologized and we should move on. Hilda and Kate actually over reacted.

    1. No they did not over react. They did what every reasonable human should do. Emeka Rollas should say the truth. He has collected money he cannot return back. Shame on him.

It s sad that we live in a country where people's bad deeds are overlooked. And i didn't see an apology. I saw a justification

    2. Chy babe hope when you keep receiving slaps from your partner and he apologies, you move on and don't over react about it

    3. Over react???
      Really???

Hope your statement would be the same if you're the one that received that slap.

    8. Shut up. Chy babe. You are a shameless woman. He should pay for what he did. That he apologized does not mean there are no consequences.

    9. You're very stupid this chubabe or whatever. Was that woman elisha's wife??? Was she even his family member?? Can a stranger slap you in your own shop and you tell them thank you? You're raving mad for this comment. Look at you talking about ice cream and Co. What a moron! Go abroad and say this shit and see if you and that elisha's you're supporting won't be sharing a cell. It's worrisome how some Nigerians just come on the Internet to display their foolishness.

Emeka rollas has collected money from that man, look at the rubbish interview he did. Saying he has to go and check if Kate and Hilda are members, seriously, he has to say that because of a new or floor member that just came in. Geezz, I am really dissapointed in you.

    11. Exactly, @ Choc Noir, he only apologised because he had no choice, disgraceful senator.

    19. @Chybabe, from your comments on this blog, I've come to the conclusion that you really need to work on your esteem/mentality.

The fact he 'apologised' does not make what he did okay. His whole attitude shows the kind of person he really is and does not deserve to be made a patron of any organization.

We really need to start holding people accountable for their actions, if not, this country will never move forward.

      Delete
    20. Chybabe you are totally wrong, did you watch the video at all? If our leaders can act in some ways and they are not held accountable, yet they receive awards them their is problem

Can he try slapping anyone abroad? Let's stop with this he has apologized attitude, did you see the way he spoke to Remi Tinubu? The man is unrepentant and it's a shame!

      Delete
  5. There is no justification for making him a patron that man is disgusting and in a sane clime no Honorable person will want to he associated with him. But this is Nigeria

    ReplyDelete
  6. I could not finish the interview. Let the Emeka Rollas be removed immediately. He is not worthy to lead the Guild

    2. @Baltika, I perfectly agree with you. He is not the sole proprietor of the guild. Did he seek people's opinion before making that man a patron? If the man wants to launder his image it shouldn't start with Actors Guild please. Mschew.

      Delete
    3. Are you the so called Patron masquerading as a bv here @ the parrot? Folks like you condone rubbish in the name "we're in Nigeria" as if the country does not deserved better. Such violent man can not be a senator in Ghana and a patron to an association that prides itself to being a role model to people how much more in civilized climes.

Away with the man and to all that support him being their patron.

I don't need to be a member of the guild nor have their ID to condemn this stupid and insensitive award as patron to the violent man/senator.

      Delete
    4. He doesn't sound like a good leader.

His word- they should go and sit down.

Oh! Gosh, what a leader. Yet they want to crucify bubu for insensitivity.

      Delete
    5. So someone can rape and apologise and It is fine? What of the trauma he put the lady through? This man assaulted a vulnerable lady who did him no wrong. He is forgiven but not fit to be a patron or a leader.

  7. Thank God I never ascribed any form of intelligence to this guy. Such a bully too.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Nigeria is truly a joke honestly. People with questionable characters aren't meant to be role model. Yes no one is a saint but there are things that need to be considered when endorsing people else we become complicit of their crime.

    ReplyDelete
  9. And i thought Emeka Rollas was a decent person.

He's even trying to shame those who spoke up by saying "I don't want to mention names, but if we begin to dig into people's personal lives, honestly people who have mentioned these names, they may not even stand in the morality test, but I don't want to go that way.". Can you imagine? So because Hilda or Kate may have checkered pasts means they should shut up?!

    ReplyDelete
  10. We should also move on from men who raped and killed women but apologize afterwards.

Men like the senator should learn from the stigma that follows his inhumane actions.

  11. I cant stand this interview.

  12. This man is not making sense at all.He can also do what that senator did.Birds of a feather. To some people, they can go to any extent cos of money. They dont care if the person kill 500 people. He has collected money so he can't cough it out

  17. Emeka Rollas, you name says it all. Rollas indeed. Look at the manner he dismissed a sensitive issue. 2. Like you dont know all these Igbo fathers when they see money.😂
He will tell his daughter to forgive him after all its her sharp mouth that caused the beating . he will warn her to always respect and obey her husband so she will not be beaten or chased out. He will also tell her she is not welcome in her father's house because the man has spent a lot of money on them, he has renovated their house or built a new one for them, bought them a car, opened a business for her mum, he is paying her younger siblings school fees, etc. 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Fear Igbo parents with married daughters. Some will still be giving birth even after they have a married daughter😂😂

      Delete
    3. 12;55 you bigoted comment about Igbo fathers is uncalled for! Tsk tsk!

I am yet to find a tribe that works hard to make money as these Igbos you castigate.
Do they have the bad eggs amongst them? Yes, just like every other tribe and race of humans.

If your life is x-rated, it won't be surprising to see that you've done some unsavoury things for money.

      Delete
    4. @Anon 12:55 if someone calls your father a money-grabbing bum who sells his daughters for money, you would appreciate and find it funny?

You make nasty comments without think how you would feel if the table is turned on you.

  18. So we should go about slapping people and apologizing since that's the best way to get recognition now

    ReplyDelete
  19. This is the lesson- even if you kill, rape and slap to deafness 1,000 mothers in a sex toy shop, just apologize and share money.

Pastor Mrs. Tinubu and her Ilk will PROTECT YOU (her words, not mine). The other senators will throway face. Hungry Nigerians will give you awards for a fee and even more desperate has-beens will select you as patrons of their association for a fee which will be spent in their lawyer's chambers, suing each other for who the real office holders are.

I hope Mr. Rollas's daughter(s) is/ are very proud of the man that his mother raised.

Son of you ladies maltreat your househelps and step children like they are goats. Some of you men rape and kill and do all sorts in secret.
Some of you women shouting here are beaten like thieves by your horsebands every time and he even rapes you join. Some will not even apologize yet you are still with them, opening legs and collecting diseased sperm. Suffering and smiling. Get out of here jor!

  29. After such a spectacular show of shame and the fact that the abuse of a woman was involved, even with a genuine and heartfelt apology, the society needs time to get over what the senator did. In this case, a lot of people perceived the senator's apology as indistinct, to others, downright scripted and insincere, so you can understand the outcry. In an era where there are various movements like the "me too" movement which excoriates any form of violence on women and a few men, sexual or otherwise, showcasing said senator as a patron of any respectable institution, is reckless and injudicious to say the least.

It's as though we, as a nation and the AGN in particular, are detached from the current reality. True, it will be unfair to ask for his head on a platter, to err is human after all, however to give him any form of public acknowledgment at this time is highly insensitive. It's still a probationary period for him, it ought to be at least. Give him a couple of years to show he is truly remorseful, let him do a couple of charitable projects, let him ease back into society as a reformed transgressor. Some people will never forgive him, but by then, society will be more accepting of him.

It is way too soon for this, in most cases, the court of public opinion holds more sway that a court of law or a disciplinary or investigative panel. Haven't you seen or heard of some people adjudged not guilty by a court of law, still being ostracized by the public? Some can barely cope and have to relocate to a different state or country where they aren't well known before they can live any semblance of a normal life. That the panel allowed him go scot free doesn't mean he is an innocent man.

As for the actresses who called him out, they don't have to be a member of the guild for their voices to be heard. Any sane person will question the choice of patron and rightly so.
