If they already married in court and submitted their application, they're safe. The new laws won't affect them. However, the queue is quite long and will take years before she finally joins him if he is a green card holder. If he is a citizen, it'll be faster but will still take a while. But since she has a visitors visa she can still visit while application is pending unless her lawyers advice otherwise.

DeleteThey eventually went to meet their hubby abroad and did another ceremony there. It's not uncommon for people that don't have complete papers yet. They may still be processing and don't want risk of being stuck here.

ReplyDeleteAt Nina’s supposed young age of 20 abi 23, she was carried away & rushed to do one of d most important marriage ceremony in Igbo land , without d groom? At her age, where is she rushing to & why so desperate? If she was above 30, I would have understood it all , but for goodness sake, age is still very much on her side . God forbid , but my niece (under 30) did a similar marriage two years ago. In her own case, she met d guy while rounding up her studies in US & b4 we knew what was happening , she was already pregnant. Guy man kept two homes & my niece never visited d second home . D story long abeg, they hurriedly did d trad wedding in Nigeria without d groom. Excuses & stories here & there, after delivery , my niece stayed back in Nigeria without guy man taking care of d mother & child. Her rich parents took over her upkeep, got her a job in d bank , while her mom nursed her baby . Marriage did not last up to a year & her father & other family members went to return d bride price without an atom of care or questioning from d absentee groom & his family. Congrats is in order Nina.
ReplyDeleteChai, Your niece didn't do well at all. She had an F1 student visa, that one can easily use for as long as possible. Switch to OPT, to h1B work visa and right down to green card..or even self petition for green card..and she gave that up for a man who 'has 2 homes' ..probably married right?? She couldn't travel back cos she must have violated the terms of her status.. unless she actually wanted to return to Nigeria. Nina's case is much better, she probably wants to leave the country to pursue the American dream. Your niece had a chance and blew it for someone who wasn't worth it..

D guy man’s reasons for having a second home was for proximity to his work place, while gist had it that he doesn’t work but he’s into all sorts of fraudulent practices u can think of. So d second home could be either for his “Akata “ or an escape route any time d “red necks” were looking for him. As for my niece, d parents refused her traveling back to avoid her going back to d guy man, hence they kept her busy by getting her a job in Nigeria. However, never say never , bcoz all these “shit” can happen to anybody , even people u think will never be trapped. One has to be prayerful & extra careful.

Well, The greatest challenge of adulthood is making good decisions, and taking responsibility for the decisions you make. These decisions..who to marry, what to study, where to live, the career/dream to pursue, the friends to keep..and so on has a significant effect on how our lives turn out. It is a skill parents should teach their children. Luck to your niece!
