Iran Confesses To ‘Unintentionally’ Shooting Down Ukrainian Commercial Plane That Killed 176 People

Iran announced Saturday (local time) that its military “unintentionally” shot down the Ukrainian jetliner that crashed earlier this week, killing all 176 aboard, after the government had repeatedly denied Western accusations that it was responsible.

The plane was shot down early Wednesday, hours after Iran launched a ballistic missile attack on two military bases housing U.S. troops in Iraq in retaliation for the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani in an American airstrike in Baghdad. No one was wounded in the attack on the bases.

A military statement carried by state media said the plane was mistaken for a “hostile target” after it turned toward a “sensitive military center” of the Revolutionary Guard. The military was at its “highest level of readiness,” it said, amid the heightened tensions with the United States.

“In such a condition, because of human error and in a unintentional way, the flight was hit,” the statement said. It apologized for the disaster and said it would upgrade its systems to prevent such “mistakes” in the future.

It also said those responsible for the strike on the plane would be prosecuted.

The jetliner, a Boeing 737 operated by Ukrainian International Airlines, went down on the outskirts of Tehran shortly after taking off from Imam Khomeini International Airport.

Iran had denied for several days that a missile caused the crash. But then the U.S. and Canada, citing intelligence, said they believed Iran shot down the aircraft.

The plane, en route to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, was carrying 167 passengers and nine crew members from several countries, including 82 Iranians, at least 57 Canadians and 11 Ukrainians, according to officials. The Canadian government had earlier lower the nation’s death toll from 63.

    2. No, Trump did not cause it. The Iranians did. Their quest for blood has led to them losing many of their people. At least if you are going to be vindictive, they should upgrade their weapons and intelligence.

Look at the US, they have the best in their military. You can come from any part of the world as long as you are intelligent and smart. But the Iranians do not welcome outsiders therefore the best of their brain cannot be good as that of a country that has variety of people. Don't be surprised that some people in the US military are the best from Iran but they will work against Iraq because their first calling is to the US.

Stop blaming Trump, if you know the crime Solemani has committed you will shut your mouth

    3. My dear, lt would have been better for the General to be live. There would have been no retaliation by Iran.

    4. You people just comment without thinking.. How is trump to be blamed.. When in preparedness for war you have to be very hostile but yet very careful too. Iran should be death with decisively for such act.

    9. Aproko Queen, you are so dense and it shows...where is the proof you ask?

Trump was acting on Intelligence reports of Soleimani's actual and prospective terrorist attacks on US owned properties and her citizens. This is information which isn't (and rarely so) for public consumption. Soleimani has been a person of interest by the US government for over two decades but never has quite an opportunity for him to be effectively taken out arisen till now.

The 'proof' you are claim ought to be established and made common knowledge is the basis for which America (and Canada) were reasonably led to believe that Iran shot down the Ukrainian passenger airliner with anti aircraft missiles.

This Iran denied until finally admitting it today, and only in face of irrefutable evidence.

Stick to things and issues that are mundane and elementary, which is clearly your niche Aproko Queen. Leave important issues for the intellectually gifted to discern.

And by the way, CNN is fake news. Presupposing that it is a point of reference for people seeking valid, unbiased information clearly shows where you are at on all levels...superficial.

    10. Aproko,do not mind them The same arguement I had with my friends this morning .Iran made a mistake.Thats the simple truth.Did the world fight us when they mistakenly shot down iran plane in 1988? Did the world crucify Russia when they mistakenly shot down Malaysia plane? Pray not to be in us black list. They will use lies and media to destroy and turn the world against you.Trump is yet to prove to un that soleiman was planning anything.Nigerians , learn to be indifferent in politics that is not of your country. They are world power and Americans but they are not gods.We pray not to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

@the general upon your epistle you still made no sense.. I can't stoop low to argue world politics and conspiracies with you. You sound dull

    12. Aproko Queen, your reply just espouses the only dull person here is you. Youre simply deflecting from an argument based on fact with no argument. You're just resorting to a baseless use of emojis to camouflage your absolute lack of intellect and ability to sustain any meaningful discourse.

The subject of debate is based on fact. Conspiracies are for fools.

As for you Anon 17:17, learn to limit your argument to relevant facts. Nobody is contesting the shooting down of airplanes that happened in the PAST. The key debate here is contemporary acts of "terrorism", which occurred in the past few days and Iran mistakenly shooting down a passenger airliner.

So many dull and undiscerning people on this blog.

So many beautiful lifes gone. It’s very painful. If not for the media obtaining the video and playing it, they would Have kept denying.
Russia shot down the Malaysian airplane. A lot of people from the Netherlands perished. I pray that we should not be in an airspace at the wrong time. I also wonder why the airline decided to venture into the air with everything that was going on that day.

    2. They did not try to make it look like a mechanical problem. They SAID, it was a mechanical problem. Everyone knew they were lying. The plane was in high altitude at the time and if it was mechanical, the plane would not disintegrated the way it did.

  9. The Iranians should just forget about revenge, they are only hurting innocent people and themselves: look at the number of Iranians that have gone with the Solemani man.

Clearly the Iranians are not as smart or militarily advanced like the US, therefore they are bound to make more mistakes in the quest for vengeance.

RIP to all the innocent victims in this mess.

  13. This people are technically and intellectually stupid. No wonder Trump vowed never to allow them access to nuclear weapons cus this Islamic country like Iran will wake up one day and bomb half of the world and call it mistake. Are y'all still asking why Trump took the step of eliminting that general who obviously wanna turn out to be another Osama bin laden? To think the occupants of that plane are mostly Iranians. Tell me a more stupid country than Iran. Same general they tranna idolize had over 30people killed during his burial procession . They really need to build a colony for Muslim nation's to live alone away from other parts of the world. Build a strong wall around them. Let them feel free to kill themselves however they like cus it obvious the have problem with peace

    2. You have spoken wisdom. I totally agree. These people should be isolated from the rest of the world let them kill eachother. This is why I love the way Trump gives it to them hot hot. Very wicked and heartless lot. See what they're doing in the North here. Havoc and commotion everywhere they're found.

So after all the denials even with clear images showing the impact as it happened, they can now come out to admit their wickedness?.. because this is not any stupid error. May the souls of all those departed and the tears of their loved ones haunt them forever.

      I'm pained please.

  14. There’s a lot of unanswered questions about this Ukrainian plane that was shot down. Why was their transponder off? Why was this particular plane shot down? That plane took off an hour after three or four other planes had taken off.

  15. Where are the dullard arguing with me that they shot it down because Ukraine is an American allies?
Who shot down a plane that carried mostly his own citizens intentionally to prove what point?

    2. Whether intentionally or "unintentionally" (they are liars, why denial at first), the truth is they shot it down thus you are the dullard.

Aproko Queen asking for evidence of Solemani's crime, so you want him to continue killing innocent American soldiers all in the name of evidence? Listen to yourself. That is how you would have been asking for evidence if the Iranians did not claim responsibility for the plane that crashed. The dead man you are defending is a terrorist, why are you looking for evidence again? These people are liars and will lie again that the dead general is being wrongly accused. They are like a jihadist cult group and you are an infidel to them.

Anyway if you are still interested in looking for evidence, you know what to do.

    3. Olodo Aproko Queen rushing to comment nonsense. And Don, your comment is stupid because the bottom line is that the plane was shot down by Iran. They claim it was unintentional, which is the reasonable thing to do and say at this point because they lack the capacity to sustain prolonged outright warfare with the US, Ukranine and Canada combined...no need to talk about the Iranians aboard the tragic flight because they clearly have no concern about the welfare of their citizens who they are known to kill and repress their rights.
