Emir Sanusi Says Polygamy Is The Major Cause Of Poverty In Northern Nigeria

Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has said that the predominant culture of marrying more than one wife by men in Northern Nigeria is the major cause of poverty in the region.

Sanusi who was represented by Usman Bugaji, said this while moderating a paper presentation session on ‘the role of universities in nation building’ at the maiden convocation of the Federal University, Gusau, in Zamfara state, on Friday.

The emir added that unless northerners desist from marrying more wives and bearing more children than they can take care of, they will continue to live in poverty.

  1. He is shaking the same table where he eats everyday. He should lead by example. Send all the other wives away and then u can start talking. Do as I say but dont do as I do.

    1. Well, he can take care of his harem and his religion allows it.
The problem is when an okada man or Gateman marries four wives and has like 12kids or even more.
The Northern leaders need to wake up as they're dragging the nation back on all human sustainable and quality living indices.
See all their children begging as every junction and traffic light in Lagos.
      It's really an embarrassment

    2. He can afford more than one but most northerners cannot yet they go ahead to marry more and keep them at home without the means to feed them.

    4. Sense will not kill this man.
If they can take care of the wives and children, why not but some of them just get married because their religion allows it.

    7. Anon 15.52, thats why Biafra itches them, they don't want to work hard but always looking for a way to embezzle funds and add more wives. That was how one got CBN small scale loan and quickly marry and bought Toyota corolla without even investing the funds.

  2. Not cultural, but misguided religious beliefs of marring four wives.

  3. Well the northern leaders should consider leading by example. You can't have 4 wives and be telling others not to have as well. Since they are not educated enough to understand that it brings more poverty to them, maybe setting an example will work.

  6. People from the northern part of Nigerian will never listen, promote them little boom they will add another wife. Pay them bonus boom is another wife, pay them 13th month, leave allowance, December salary plus Xmas bonus money boom you will see a new wife. In January they collect bulk money is another new wife, children are born every year. You cannot just be getting married and giving birth anyhow when you cannot take care of them
Most of their women are not even working to support their husbands. Ordinary one wife, one man and two children you have not finish taking care of them not to talk of 3 or 4 wives with 20 children. Preach on oga Sanusi and see if your people will listen.

    1. That's why my billionaire Hausa boss is punishing us too because if he increases salary, they will add more wives, the next thing they will start complaining of the pay being small.

  7. Lead by example nah oga, people just believe in preaching and not doing. Even if you can take care of many wives marry one and use the remaining resources for charitable causes. All this religion talk is rubbish, they can't just stick with one woman and that's it period.

  8. My driver earns 56k and he has 3 wives. Non of his daughters finishes primary 6 and he sends them to get married at about age 12 or 13. The boys too sometimes start secondary schools then drop out to become senior almajeri. And his youngest wife is still having more children. Their wisdom is generated from the sole of their feet.
