Mrs Dee's Corner -Bribe

Do you give Bribe or collect?Or both???

Most people do not have a problem turning down a bribe, because we all realise it is morally wrong and against the law.

The issue is, in a country like Nigeria, where the law chooses when and for whom to work, we are often faced with the dilemma of doing what is right by not giving bribe thereby getting extremely frustrated and sidelined or choosing the easy route and achieving instant results.

I've been faced with situations where even though I knew giving bribe was wrong I had no choice but to comply.

The beginning of service year was quite close when I came for final year clearance, I had scaled through departmental and faculty clearance, but got stuck at the bursary. For two weeks I was going back and forth just to get my receipts cleared but there was no headway.

It seems I was not getting the drift because the man in charge plainly told me to give him a token and my receipts would be stamped. I did.

Motorists on our roads have one bad story or the other to tell of police extortion even with complete particulars. Even innocent citizens are framed up and to avoid being locked up, part with their monies.

Religious clerics will always preach that bribery is a sin whether you are on the giving or receiving end, but no one comes up with how to wriggle out of a tight spot without giving bribe in such situations.

I still have this inner turmoil when I do cos I never know if I have sinned against God or just done the unavoidable.

*Giving bribe gives you Inner turmoil? My dear are you a Nigerian or not? Please decide...LMAO!!!

    1. Poster, well done. I like your take. Well, stella thinks otherwise. To her, you are not Nigerian enough if you see anything wrong in that. Wow! We always say everything to just paint us bad.

    2. Amen. With our different law enforcement agencies misbehaving. This year we experienced custom issues Ìbàdàn. Imagine them seizing goods coming from trade fair to IB and even those going to Ilorin and some northern parts and they agreed all the goods are not contraband. Painful and annoying.

Gifts are not given under any coercion or threat of denial of a service or entitlement.
Bribes are given under these circumstances like the instances mentioned in the story above.

  4. Most times people called it PR. I remember the audit firm I once worked with, anytime we go for tax audit, asides the necessary lunch that will be given, they (the companies we're auditing) usually give us brown envelope which we call PR. But we all know the essence of the brown envelope is to reduce their tax liability.
Can we not say that is a bribe?

  7. The truth is that nobody in Nigeria wants to lose their jobs either. I was once being compelled in a court of law in Nigeria to give a bribe to get an affidavit typed by the typists. I bypassed the typist and went to her boss who was complicit in all these of course. I introduced myself (I AM NOT a lawyer), told him what happened with the typist and that I came to know if he was aware of what's going on. This man denied, rushed out and made sure the thing was typed and stamped and signed right there for me to collect. Also learn to record these people with your smartphones. That is why we have them. And thankfully, no laws bars someone from recording another in Nigeria.

  9. We are guilty of this in one way or the other, thou they call it bribery and corruption but i call it EXTORTION in some cases.

In the year 2018, Corruption Perception Index ranked 180 countries and territories. Nigeria occupied number 144 on the table
Corruption takes many forms and can be interpreted in many different ways. It is hard to enter any sector in Nigeria without observing one corrupt practice or another. In fact, corruption is not only observed in the public sector and politics.

There is global recognition that bribery is morally and legally wrong so what are you telling me; we know all this thing but the way forward is still hidden till now.....Just try in your little or large space to do things differently from what the society expects you to, Thou hard but do it Consciously and we will enjoy the result soon!!!
