It was gathered that the decision was in furtherance of the on-going joint border operation, tagged, Exercise Swift Response. Daily Trust reports that the operation began on August 20, 2019, involving the Nigeria Customs Service and the Immigration Service with support from the Army and other security agencies.
The joint border security is being coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and covers the four geopolitical zones including South-south, South-west, North-central and the North-west.
Briefing newsmen in Abuja, the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd) said: “The issue of movement of goods is not the same thing with movement of persons. Let’s understand that all perishable items are on prohibition whether on export or import. Therefore nobody can carry tomato to the border to import or export. So it makes it easier for us to close and ensure that all goods for now are banned from being exported or imported through our land borders.
“That is to ensure that we have total control over what comes in and what we do. We are strategising on how best the goods can be handled when we get to when this operation will relax,” he said. Ali, however, advised local dealers who want to export or to import items to use the seaports which is the only access at present.

On when the operation which is nearly two months will end, Ali said, “It is as long as it will take our neighbours to come to the table and agree to execute exactly what was agreed during former Olusegun Obasanjo’s time which is simple adherence to ECOWAS transit procedure. That has not happened.”from dailytrust.

DeleteGuess the ban is just going nationwide now. Northerners have been crying for months now over this ban. Guess it's for the best
ReplyDeleteBuhari you are leading people that are not happy yet you are not making any move to adjust yet you are adding more pains. God will judge you and all your committee.
ReplyDelete...and when other west African nations retaliate, Nigeria will cry blue murder. You will all not call your government to order now oo. Even Ecowas is silent on this, the world is watching. No one should say other west African countries are sacking Nigerians from doing petty trading in their countries oo while your president has shut the border and people's goods are stuck and getting spoilt at your borders. Nigerians will go as far as selling even in traffic in other people's countries but exporting by border which people bring as wholesale supplies are being turn away.
ReplyDeleteThe sọ called goods are not even made in those African countries, their major market is Nigeria and we have right to say no to what we don't want.
DeleteSo how prepared is the country to combat hunger? No road, no electricity, no mechanised farming. This country is in serious problem
ReplyDeleteSo if I want buy one bag of rice now , na through ship I go fit carry am lol, all of them know what's up, that man no kuku dey boda himself because if you go to their homes they have lots of seized goods worth million, including the small rank custom officers they have their special store room for whatever goods they seized.I believe say if e affect them they won't say until further notice before they open boarder for those who run their businesses through that means.

Some of the locally made products that they're shouting upandown, have now inflated their prices, extorting people with their low quality products and making it difficult for low income earners to survive with their meagre salaries
I don't see how thunder will not locate this people swiftly
Good for change people. At least it is affecting everyone. Let's enjoy the ride
ReplyDeleteIt's actually a good move but the government should ensure that local producers and farmers receive enough support so that they won't increase price of their products unnecessarily because that's where they will get wrong
ReplyDeleteGod bless you, right policies from the government to control price most be put in place.
DeleteI pray that Abakiliki Rice, will not Skyrocket ooo....
ReplyDeleteWhat’s all this???
Remains for Buhari to bring knife to our necks.
ReplyDeleteMy goods are stucked here. No sales cos .of border closure. It is well.
Closing Land borders and banning importation of food items. Ok o. Quick to take action on things that benefits the masses but see nothing wrong in medical tourism abroad. Give Us (masses) food. Nigeria is not yet self sufficient in food production. All the seized wares at the borders are being distributed to the politicians.
ReplyDeleteMay hardship and starvation be the lot of those supporting this evil and deceptive govt
