STAND ALONE NARRATIVE
STAMMERER BROUHAHA

Hello Stella,
Thank you for this platform, I do have something bothering me for quite sometime and it is really not about me but my Brother, he is in his mid 20s, served last year but without a job yet...

He is a chemical engineer, he is currently learning about Forex Trading, He was one of the top 6 during his university days, but he “Stutters”, his speech are not that clear enough, so it’s quite difficult for him getting a job.

He gets countless calls for interviews but it gets to the point of the panel interview session it ends there, when questions are thrown at him, due to his speech issues, it’s quite a hitch expressing himself freely.

He comes home quite depressed but he doesn't show it but I know he isn’t happy, his peers are all doing okay with good jobs...
We have prayed, fasted and sought for therapies but no result yet.....
Although I trust God because his ways aren’t ours........
Please, what else do we do?
Can i take Job openings on his behalf and go for the Interviews?
I Would Be In The Comment Section, Thank you Guys...

Chai!!!!!..........I don't know what to say..what kind stammering is this to hamper the progress of an Intelligent man.?I think his serious stammering comes as a result of being too nervous or scared.....

May he should inform them before the interviews that he stammers and it gets worse under scrutiny..
Maybe he should include it n his CV as a handicap?
I really don't know but i pray he finds a way soon..Please keep us updated on this...

    2. Maybe he should include in his CV that he would prefer a written interview? All the same I like Stella's suggestion, he should include it in his CV, it's better they know before the interview stage.E- hugs to your darling brother.

    3. Poster pls Google Gareth Gate and how he overcame stuttering.

    4. Maybe a speech therapist will work for him. I'm so glad he is not idle. As you continue to pray in faith I believe things will eventually turn around for him.

    5. It helps when he states upfront that he stutters.
My brother is also an engineer who stutters. A 9-5 job may not be the best fit for such people because of the people relations required. However what my brother did was to take a computer course and learn coding. He’s paid for his knowledge and skills now.
So let your brother look at investiyin his strengths or passion.

    6. Poster, there was an episode on Steve Harvey’s programme where he talked about how people can stop stammering, said way back he used to stutter when he speaks too, so I guess you can look for his videos on YouTube.

    7. @16:16 you took the words right out of my mind.
This brilliant young engineer should get on with an ICT training and learn coding, software development applications, robotics engineering. He will be in high demand.

I also agree to including his speech challenge on his CV as well as engaging a speech therapist.

I once recommended this speech therapy (speech and elocution) to my friend who talks so fast her words are tumble into one another. Brilliant babe (Petroleum Engineer)

    8. There are speech therapists for stammerers. There are also apps in the Google Play Store I came across, for speech therapy. Maybe he should download one of them and see if it helps in any way.

Like someone said, since he's so inclined, let him learn coding, programming and all those things. They hardly have to interact with people or can even get gigs from home.

Meanwhile, who is to say he would have gotten those jobs without the speech challenge Getting a job in naija isn't a walk in the park. Don't beat yourselves up too much jor.

      Best wishes.

    9. It is such a shame. Stammering is a disability and it should be recognised and taken into account when conducting an interview.

I hope he succeeds in what will be in his best interest.

  2. There's a clip on how to manage stuttering by that guy that wrongly announced d winner of ms universe, I can't remember his name, he gave a practical detail on how to handle it.

    7. lol...I'm a stammerer too
i stopped disturbing myself about that a long time ago...
what usually work for me is,when ever I feel like I'm gonna stammer I just change my voice..like I don't use my real voice.i have a baritone voice but I just make it more deeper in order not to stammer.

      Delete
    8. he should always relax when ever he tries to speak even if it means him taking the words one step at a time...what really helps is talking slowly.
Tell him to always have enough breathe anytime he wants to speak
it took me a lot of time and confidence though I still stammer but I don't find myself stammering when I meet new people..i only stammer when I'm around family and friends..i noticed anytime I spoke my native languag(igbo)I stammer,so I kinda avoid speaking igbo a lot of times even to my family members..

there are a lot of ways to control yourself from stammering
these are just the ones that work for me.

    9. I like baritone voices 😁

    13. Tell him to relax before he starts talking and he should speak slowly. But before going for the interview, he needs to Inform them ahead thereby preparing them. That way, his interview is not rushed and he doesn’t get worked up. Most importantly, relax and speak slowly. He will definitely have breakthroughs.

      Delete
    14. Steve Harvey advised, before you say those words out repeat it to yourself. Eg if you want to say "we are planning a wedding party September" first say them in your mind like twice before speaking out.. he said if the words are repeated it then comes out easily. Hope it helps

  3. This is quite sad for him not able to get a job because he stutters.
You can’t go on interviews on his behalf.
Are there no written interviews he can go for?
Is he always nervous when he is outside the house?
Setting up a business for him won’t be bad.
That will boost his confidence and may decide to not work for anyone later on.
You guys try the business thing.

  4. With God all things are possible. He needs to really calm down and avoid been nervous or to impress. He should learn to take his speech one at a time. I know of someone that stutters before but now doing well with his speech, you wont even know he was once a stammerer.

  5. Poster, I don't know for certain if stammering has a cure which I doubt. Tell him to be slow in speech presentation and avoid using big or long wordings especially words up to three or four syllables. Stammering has grade. There are some whose own comes as soon as they are provoke or upset. Some even will have to hit you before they pronounce words. Just tell him to speak a word one after the other and also try to avoid provocation or anger. If he speak slowly, it won't be difficult for him even though it will be noticed.

  6. He did therapy and it didn't help? Then he's yet to meet a good therapist.
I suggest he informs them once he sits down with the interviewers that he has speech issues before the interview commences, if he's good then I don't see why he shouldn't be employed unless his work has to do with dealing directly with customers/clients then they might start having 2nd thoughts.

  7. If you are in Lagos, look up St Patrick speech and language centre at 13b Remi-Fanikayode Street,
    GRA Ikeja,
Lagos. They're one of the best.

  8. I stammer too and I discovered I only stammer when extremely angry or nervous. He should take life easy and calm down in every situation. He would see that the stammer will reduce to a great degree.

  9. I dont like situations like this,I dont know what advice to give.
God, please send him a helper.

  10. Mine is hereditary.
It gets worse when I'm anxious
I had to learn and master the art of self control and being calm under anxiety and stress[The breathing in and out deeply helps a lot too]
That was how I was able to help my daughter when I noticed she had it too.
Now she speaks clearer and relates well with people confidently.

  11. What’s your brothers field?
If it’s nit something that requires talking a lot, he shouldn’t let it hamper him
I’ve seen people come in for interviews and try to hide very helpful info. Like instead of sitting quietly and looking unintelligent explain to us that you stammer and we should be a bit patient with you. Employers also want intelligent people and we know people have these issues.
By the way, forex can pay very well. Is he doing it with a Nigerian company ?

He'd do well in a working environment where he wont be required to communicate much, but more of productivity.
This chronicle just reminded me of "The Good Doctor"... a boy with Albert einstein IQ level, but diagnosed with Autism, he had difficulty in communication & empathy with patients & their impatiently waiting family, besides these everyday challenges he was a straight up damn good doctor.. he was eventually sent to be a Pathologist even though he prefered being a Surgical resident.
Its a good idea for him to study FX trade, but FX trade isnt for a feeble mind, you can blink & your money has evaporated, then u'd know depression... but if hes good, it'd be best he becomes his own boss.

  13. I have this friend, she's a TV presenter now, a good one. If you didn't know outside work, you wouldn't know she's a stammerer. She does lots of video on Instagram but you won't notice she's a stammerer. I don't know how she does it when it comes to work. You will o my know she's a stammerer when you converse with her at home or Sth.

  14. Great advice @Blackberry! Your brother could also try taking a deep breath before speaking and speak slowly.
This will help to calm him down, stuttering gets worse when an individual is tense.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Maybe your brother should look into coding, programming where your skills are more important at interviews than speech.

    ReplyDelete
  16. You cannot take an interview on his behalf. I’d rather not also include this fact in his CV as this may hinder him being called for interview, Nigeria is not abroad immediately they see handicap potential employers may run. However, I think you continue with the speech therapy and pray he meets favor, I have seen people get a job they didn’t even apply for so keep faith but continue therapy.

    ReplyDelete
  17. it is well with him. Please don't loose hope. There is always way out of it. God wil intervene on his behalf. Then I will suggest he explore the option of establishing something on his own like business.

    ReplyDelete
  18. He can manage it if he learn to speak slower. And he should learn to laugh it off no matter how nervous he gets cos trust, it could get real awkward.

Being excited , rushed or anxious usually worsen it and that the case of your boyfriend. He will realize that whenever he is completely relaxed, he talks better without so much stutter.

Do well to encourage him to speak slower, enunciate and relax. It helps a lot..

  19. All i feel is my pain for him after reading this. Gush! I hate what he's going through. Only God can come through for him. Tell him to always calm his nerves when talking. He should never be in a hurry to say anything. I think with these and God,he will be alright.

  20. tell your brother to work on himself ye i said so cos i know of someone that was a serious Stammerer and when he saw that this was pulling him backward him on him self worked on it and came out of it himself. I will advise that he should start picking his words one after the other, talk one and keep quit. He should try to see if he can really stop it, you cannot attend an interview on his behalf cos the company want to meet the person that they want to work with to see if they are ok with the person. What if after you attend the interview and he resumes work but the saw him and refused him working what will you do?

if you guys can raise fund for him why don't you people start up a good business for him while he work on himself. Goodluck

    ReplyDelete
  21. he should not be under pressure when speaking. Just slowly, one word after another..both of you can practice the interviews, ask him questions as an interviewer and when he is answering, let him how the words are coming out n if he needs volume. He can also pray rice in front of a mirror

  22. Does anyone know a successful Nigerian stammerer that may be interested in mentoring this young man
Always good to find someone with experience

  23. If he isn't anxious to get the job, he may not stammer as much. For his next interview, let him 'not send' but be relax and talk to them as though he has known them all his life. Looking for roles that are more skilled based and require less verbal communication may be idle for him too. E.g. Field Engineering roles

    ReplyDelete
  24. Is your brother's name David? I think I'll go with the self employment suggestion. Nigeria is not fair to such people bcos even people without challenges still don't get jobs.

  25. I used to stammer
My hubby kept praying for me that he did not like it,it never bothered me though.
We noticed it stopped in our third year of marriage
It just stopped..but when I am very VEry angry I stammer
I think I have once this year ,
But I dont know if people do therapies for it
    God help him.
I can imagine, hindering him from job.

  26. He should go for speech therapy and learnt to speak slowly..

  27. Let him drink water from a snail shell. I heard it does wonders for stammerers. There are other local alternatives, pls google them.

  28. You mentioned that he is learning Forex trading. That's something that can make him an employer of labour if he masters the process well. I'm in PH and I know lots of young people employed by MBA Forex.

  29. Your brother is a go-getter, brilliant, smart, optimistic and hardworking. These are qualities every employer is looking for in a prospective candidate. So, have your brother send out his resume as usual. Now, when he gets called into the interview, that's when he must make a request for accommodation based on his disability. Simply, have him ask for a written interview. Otherwise, inform the interview panel ahead of time about his special needs and see if they can come to some other arrangement for him. Best wishes.

  30. This is the story of my brother. He just relocated and he's happy. Let your brother travel out. He will be fulfilled over there.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Have integrity please. You cannot commit fraud in the name of finding your brother a job. He needs a speech therapist to work through his stutter. In the meantime he should take courses in written communication to improve his skills, as long as he's not in customer service or sales, he will improve his chances.

  32. If the job is his, he will surely get it. Whether he stammers or not. I have a living testimony very close to me. His was very bad but as at today. He is walking in one of the biggest health organisations and being paid very very well. Let him get close to God and hold on to His promise. Na God dey do am, no be man.

    ReplyDelete
  33. If I can get his number, I'm a speech therapist.

  34. Gosh! Nigerian employers and lack of understanding....
If a person stutters, let him not have to interact with customers or be put in a situation where he must. And then the company should help him with a speech therapy.

As Stella has said, please let him put it in his resume upfront that he stammers. You know where he lists his skills, he can follow it by listing his challenges: working with speech therapist to overcome stuttering.

He should also intentionally work on overcoming it. See ehn... self-help is key these days. No one was born perfect, so we need to keep working hard to become the best version of ourselves.

Also, if it is a big issue please let him not hesitate to go abroad where he can get the right help and support to deal with this.

  35. First of all, let him forget about the Forex shit.it all lies and being a Chemical Engineer is not a bad idea but i would advise if he could go into Computer Programming, Cyber Security, program Developing, Data analysis, IBM,Python Data Science ETC. In this kind of field, you don't have to talk too much because your work does the talking. This is a hotcake . Thank me later

  36. His living sister. Your brother should make a
List of 40 potential questions a don practice the answers daily. It would help him when he is saying what he has rehearsed multiple times. Also he should start the interview by saying : thank you for inviting me to this interview “I have a minor speech impediment therefore pleAse bear with me as I may speak a bit slower. While this will not affect my duties in this role I am also confident your company upholds moral values and will not make decisions with prejudice”.
