ANONYMOUS GISTER - MEMORY LANE

Let those of us who grew up using Abacha Stove, line up here oo!

I remember how things got so tough for us and we resulted into going to beg for metal paint bucket and saw dust from the mill not too far from our house.

The landlord got so fed up with our inability to pay house rent for over 4years that he disconnected our electricity and water.


We would treck miles in search of water or even get chased away by some rich people with taps by their gate because we didn't have money to pay.
My mother would use needle and thread to tack our uniforms and stockings. It was so bad our uniform got smaller as we advanced in class but we had to manage it that way.


I would watch my mum hustle for standing in molue with me clutched firmly to her side. Several times when her apron (Nurse) would get ripped and she would neatly tack it.


We had no idea what childhood television program was because our 'wardrobe black and white TV) had become an artifact of no use in our living room.


Several times we were sent back home from school for not paying our fees. My dad was out of job for so many years of which when he earlier had money, he was the one who helped his friend the landlord complete the house. He also assisted the landlord get out of serious case that would have landed him in jail and had his properties confisticated.


We had our house at the village though it was yet to be completed before my dad lost everything.

We were always in the house after school and weekends, we had no money to transport to any place of worship so we would sing hymns and pray morning and night and on sundays. We had no nice clothes or footwears to even wear to church or anywhere else.Our clothes were hand me downs from her friends at work.

One of my brother's saved his break money for weeks to buy a shoe-makers thread and pin. He would mend all our school sandals when they give way so as to save us money. He considered being a shoe-maker on our street but my parents would not permit it.

It is important to note that my mum was never ashamed to beg from anybody,so long as the money would keep us in school and make us live to see another day.

We only ate rice on Christmas day and it was usually either the one shared at my mum's office or a good samaritan chose to be a blessing.

We would hear neighbours watching kiddies programs and home videos from our house but we were disciplined enough not to go peeping through windows.


There was a time when all 5 of us children came down with high fever. There was no means or aid to convey us to the hospital. My mum's place of work was a travelling distance from home. It was not even an option.

There was this greenish fruit with spikes on the body used to avert fever in children. My parents would put at the corners of our room whilst we were laid on the mat with palm oil rubbed all over our body.


This event of my life made me remember a movie I watched so many years later in which Chris Rock talked about 'people working in places they can not afford to live in , hospitals they can't afford to be sick in and restaurants they can't afford to dine in'.


My mums salary would never be able to cover 5 sick children at a go. She would get drugs on credit in a chemist about 45mins walk from the house until we recovered and she paid him by month end.


Usually my mum's salary would be exhausted before pay day itself!. We had no idea what chicken or turkey or pasteries or biscuits or chocolates or ice cream tasted like until we all became adults.


There was this dried meat called 'tinko' which my brother and I would walk miles to buy with the little coins we were given by my parents. My dad would soak it in hot water and wash thoroughly because of sand only on occassions when my mum comes home with okro and dried pepper.


My dad would tarry in fasting for 40days breaking only with pap and no sugar or milk.
When the foodstuff vendor down the street chased myself and my elder sister like thieves. We still had to shamelessly go back to beg for 'milk cup' of garri to drink.

The woman would insult my mum so much for owing her regularly but we had no choice but to still beg her to bear with us.

My mum would soak the garri and we would sit round the plastic bowl waiting for it to swell. She would either drink the water and allow us drink the garri or she would not even touch it at all. I watched my parents become so skinny and malnourished.

It was a really challenging experience for me growing up as a child in abject poverty. It is even more saddenning that when God answered our prayers and gave my dad a huge contract, my father was lured away with juju by his childhood friend who was never there when we were suffering.


This friend connived with his own female lover and put a love potion in my father's drink. Dad moved out of the house with the money and went to start another life with the strange woman. It was in the midst of our continued poverty that we lost my mum to cancer!


Kai, we suffered to survive! All 5 of us have individual stories to tell after her death up until where we are currently now with our struggles!


Women be guided! Watch the kind of friends your husbands and partners keep! Let them tag you a witch or Ruth, don't pay any mind to them o! If the chips are down, you will not see anyone!


Hold your man to God in prayer always! Disrespect any randy, evil friends if need be or destroy them spiritually if they refuse to sit in their houses!
Only permit godly friends and the ones capable of influencing your man and home positively!
My mum never lived to reap the fruits of her labour! 

Another woman came and took everything we suffered for with diabolical means!





Everyone,even rich folks have a memory lane that isnt ''pretty'' to hear!!!

This is the wrong post but I am so pissed now. My bosses (in an international NGO for that matter) will not give me maternity leave oo so i am going on an unpaid leave for the second time. The first time i had spend 10 months out of the 12 months to claim leave rights and i took it in good faith.

Now i have spent 21 months on 2 separate project in 3.5 years and they are saying it's a new contract and i have spent only 7 months afresh with the organization.......Okay.....atleast i have learnt my lesson to either return or look for a more reasonable workplace. 

My anger really is that they have the gut to tell me "YOU WILL BE HELPING US FROM HOME O". Are you crazy???????? The person they planned to work for the months I am away told a colleague she'll tell me to take my laptop, modem and even give me airtime so i can help her from home cos she does not understand the job....can you imagine? I am boiling right now!!!!! It's so unfair to women....




Hello?Did you not sign a contract before taking up employment with them?if,yes,please review it and see what wrong..If you didnt,it would be a real pity!!!!
