Lady Who Sold Her Day Old Baby Has Been Arrested + She Bought Phone,Wrapper....

Nneka Donatus, a 27-year-old single mother, has been arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Imo State Police Command for selling her baby girl a day after putting to bed.

Donatus was arrested alongside a level 12 civil servant at the state Ministry of Women Affairs, Ujunwa Udechukwu, 40; and Nneoma Onwusereaka, 37; who allegedly facilitated the transaction between the single mother and a couple.

Speaking to Southern City News at the command headquarters in Owerri on Thursday, Donatus said she sold the baby to buy a phone, wrapper and slippers for herself, since she won’t be able to raise the newborn alongside her other five children.

The woman, who spoke in her native dialect, said, “I sold my baby girl for N600,000 and used N15,000 from the money to buy a phone, wrapper and slippers and transported myself back home.

“I asked Nneoma Onwusereaka and her husband, who had the balance to use it to start a business for me. I have five children already and I am separated from my former husband.”

The civil servant who allegedly connived with Donatus to sell the baby told the police that she was rewarded with N10,000 for connecting the buyer with the seller. The 40-year-old civil servant admitted that she made a mistake, adding that the N10,000 was paid into her account the following day.

Herald Nigeria gathered that the mother of the woman reported her to the SARS operatives when the baby was nowhere to be found following her birth on March 28. The state Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Ladodo, explained that his command was fighting hard to ensure that child trafficking, which he considered as a serious crime against humanity, was curbed in the state.

  5. 27years, 5 children and jobless with no source of income and still giving birth?! She didn't even have money to transport herself home. Where's the father or fathers of the 5kids? because it seems as if she's catering for them alone. Why get pregnant under the circumstances surrounding her? These are the ones living below the poverty line in this country.
Why not take the baby to the state motherless babies home? At least make it official and documented.
This life is indeed a pot of beans. Someone somewhere is willing to give an eye to have a child (me inclusive) and here she is with 5 and selling the 6th one off.

  8. What is wrong if a woman gives her baby to another person and gets compensated for it? Orphanages in Nigeria do worse. They also sell the babies to the highest bidder and give a paltry sum to the mothers.

    1. The ripple effect of such an illegal legality is what we should be mindful of. The legality of selling another human being will definitely usher in an era of slavery.

    3. Ohhh, God bless you!!!!!

I was just wondering, how is it a crime?? Will they give her money to take care of the child??? Well, what do i know??

    4. It is a crime. You're abusing the rights of the child by selling them off, even though it's her child, that's a full human being we talking about. Also if it is legal, people will start kidnapping and stealing babies to sell as theirs, and even forge documents to say it's their kid. And as anony said it could usher in another era of slavery. How do we even know the child is hers. I hope the cops conduct a DNA test and not go believing what a criminal is saying.

  9. Nigeria has been designated as the poverty capital of the world and you think say na small thing. Though this occurrence is very unfortunate but the girl cannot be blanmed at all. The kain poverty wey people dey face these days no be here. Our politicians have laid a massive siege on the country, this siege has been on for long but it has now escalated to another level. When the Assyrians laid a siege on Samaria the then capital of ancient Israel cutting of food supplies, water and all other necessities from the people, the people began to eat their children when the situation became unbearable; this is what Nigerian politicians and their military backers are now doing to Nigerians in a barely discernible manner and the effect is the same. Poverty is destroying the lives of so many people and these bastards are rolling in money and flamboyance, for example see Dino Melaye parading three new custom built G-Wagons at Abuja recently to mock the suffering populace, what in the world would any sensible man be doing with three brand new G-Wagons for himself alone if not the height of insensitivity and utmost greed, they are only lucky that many Nigerians are cowards otherwise they would have staged a revolution to set themselves free but its still possible let these looters just continue.

    1. What freedom will come from staging a revolution. History has taught us that the people would only be changing task masters. I can never join any such revolution and that is not cowardice but wisdom.

    3. Shooter Gyal, the way you write at times makes one question the density of your brain. Are you saying that the only thing you could pick from that write-up above is ‘it is not our business’? Really? Maybe you roll with the thieves in this country and as such, you feel obligated to rise to their defense. Reevaluate your values and restructure your thought process.

    4. Shooter, your thinking needs a complete revamp. Thorough overhaul cos it's currently not sound at all.

  12. The poor lady put her baby up for adoption they termed it 'selling'. This is something that is done everywhere as long as she wasnt coerced to give up her baby. Now they are embarrassing people up and down. Thank God they didnt even put the couples that adopted the baby. The only problem i see here is that she didnt inform her parents probably cos she knew they wont agree. They would rather the baby die of malnutrition than a deserving couple having the child as their own. yet worse, she manages to keep the baby only to give her out as househelp at 8 year of age. African mentality

We just like fighting the wrong battle in this country. A lot of human trafficking is going on that they should focus on they are busy distracting themselves with Adoption that is a positive thing. How is adoption human trafficking anyway. I may have been worried if the mother was less than 20 or its her first pregnancy. The ones without conscience are the politicians who steal all the money that should have fed the child .

    1. I understand you Steph, but it’s not really a one-way street. A lot of ill can come out from such if not properly regulated or monitored by the authorities, for instance, who has checked that the couple do not intend to use the baby for rituals (I am just saying). There should be an avenue whereby the intending adopters and the pregnant lady can go to the relevant government agency to register this adoption and make it legal, any monetary compensation can then be termed pocket money (not sales revenue 🙄). The way it has been done now just shows a baby has been ‘sold’. Sale of humans should never rear its ugly head again.

  13. In western countries, you walk into the clinic and get free birth control as long as you are more than 18 years, Does she have that opportunity, no, tell me its not goverments fault.

She probably has sex to get money to feed herself, if goverment provided her with a job she wont do that. tell me its not the goverments fault.
Everything still balls down to bad goverment

  15. To think these Buagran people have crowded Stella's blog justfying child sale is just sad!!! Why are you people like this. Once your people do something wrong, instead of condemning it, you look for ways to downplay and justify it. Has it occurred to you that that baby could have ended up in the hands of ritualists or demented child traffickers. Why are you people like this for heaven's sake?!!
