Labour Minister Chris Ngige Versus Nigerian Labour Congress - Your View

The minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) seem headed for a full blown war over his failure to inaugurate the board of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), where a former general secretary of the Congress was earlier named board Chair.

The minister’s action has pitched him against the Ayuba Wabba-led NLC, leading to accusations and counter accusations on both sides

Wabba told the media at a briefing that the option left to the Congress to compel the minister to inaugurate the NSITF board was to picket him.

He alleged that Ngige confessed to him and some people that his fear was the rigidity and incorruptible nature of Chief Kokori.

According to the Sun,Wabba accused the minister of employing tactics to delay the inauguration by spreading falsehood to misinform the public on the reason why Kokori cannot chair the board of NSITF. On the way the appointment of Kokori came, Wabba said it was not true that he was chosen to represent the Labour movement, rather it was based on his personality and as a member of the ruling party’s Board of Trustees from Delta State.

He said it was Ngige himself who informed NLC of Kokori’s appointment as the chairman of NSITF board and wondered why he was being reluctant to inaugurate the board. Part of the delay tactics was the set up of an administrative panel to look into a criminal case already investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Ngige, in reacting to the Organised Labour threat to confront him, dismissed NLC’s plan as a feeble attempt to wriggle out of shame and illegality, and vowed to remain unshaken on the part of the law.

  1. Quick question to you Stella. If you direct Beloved to do a giveaway and you specifically mentioned the person(s) to her but Beloved refused to do what you asked her to do, what would be your reaction? Well... there you have it. The Vice President appointed Kokori going to how many years now and they say Ngige has refused to inaugurate the board. Lol. He is only doing what he was told to do if you ask me. Maybe it was a hasty decision to appoint Kokori and when they realized, they told Ngige to apply the brakes. You Ngige could not tell your bosses to come out and address these people. You keep stalling giving flimsy excuses now you have major problems with labour. If I were the Kokori guy I would tell them to keep their appointment. Imagine somebody’s father shedding tears on TV. It’s is very painful when you put in your best for your country, time to be recognized they start playing hanky panky with you. I also believe someone he stepped on in the past is the ‘causer’ of his predicament. I might be wrong.

  3. As much as I’m not a fan of Ngige, I strongly frown at the NLC getting involved in appointments being made by the executive arm of the government.
NLC should focus on their primary assignment which is the welfare of Nigerian workers. They are rubbishing their integrity by getting involved in this matter even to the extent of picketing Ngige’s residential apartment, there’s nothing peaceful about that protest because it clearly infringes on his family’s fundamental rights.
They should focus their energy on making sure every employer implements the recently passed minimum wage bill instead of helping their former colleague fight his personal / political issues. That’s a clear abuse of their respective offices

  6. This ship has sailed o. The board was inaugurated today with Mr. Austine Isire as the chair. Kokori has long been informed of the intention of the government not to substantiate his appointment and he has in fact been nominated for another appointment. It is obvious that his intention to continue as chair of NSITF by all means is not born out of any noble intention to serve but where money plenty pass.

Last last dem go all dey alright. Congratulations by the way to the new Chairman. His resume is quite robust, haven been CEO of Standard Alliance for over a decade, and still in the board & present Chairman of Davodani Microfinance bank. I hope NSITF becomes better managed.
