DeleteNaija girls, I don't know which US guys you are referring to as you cannot generalize. If a 25 yr old was born or raised here and hasn't visited Nigeria they are completely different from Brother Musiliu the lottery winner taxi driver or Aunty Morayo who really has no profession other than CNA or looking for potential bill payers. There is a 3rd group who came here after high school with F1. The first group have a hard time relating to them as depending on whether they were raised in the suburbs or the Nigerian section of the "hood", they don't have many things in common other than their names. Some of us who are parents of the first group want them to mix with the F1 group but its hard as they actually grew up in a different culture than the "FOB" (fresh off the boat F1s) who largely still speak like Nigerians, nothing wrong with that except that sometimes our use of English can come off as unconventional to some Americans or even ignorant. When I first got here over 2 decades ago, I said sorry to everyone as we did in Nigeria before my friends made me realize you only say sorry if you are responsible for the situation. Please note that "gonna gonna etc" is a ghetto way of speaking and its part of the "ebonics", the dialect in the hood and among African Americans. its not a general way of speaking if you are a professional or you intend to go far in corporate America. Same with sagging, tattoos, etc. I'm not judging them just clarifying for those who may be confused. Sagging(a carry over from the prison) is from the time they threw a lot of black people to jail for marijuana or crack and removed their belts so they won't commit suicide with it.
ReplyDeleteBack to the topic, most of the commenters here are probably talking about the Bro Musiliu or the Aunty Morayo group as the ones born or raised here marry their kind. Some don't even have Nigerian friends depending on their school district and neighborhood while growing up. We would like the F1 group to interact more with them not for papers for the f1 but to avoid all of them marrying oyinbo but even when they come to barbecues with their parents, they rarely interact. I commend RCCG for some of the few interactions and even marriages among those whose parents attend RCCG but for those of us who go to oyinbo churches God will help us.
There is a lot in America not just that the guys are generous that we can learn from. Its not the topic but someone asked why there are so many lakes in subdivisions (what we call estates in naija). I explained to them that builders and homeowners have something called sunk pumps installed in the basement of every McMansion in the flood zone. The builders connect every home via the sunk pumps and pipes to the equivalent of 1 or 2 plots set aside in the approved plan for the lake . When flood or rain is not severe or back to back, the lake is actually artificial. water that would have flooded each home's basement is all piped into this lake. It not only beautifies the subdivision but they breed geese there and its always beautiful. I'm not suggesting it stops the effect of all floods but that there is a lot of thinking and infrastructure planning that goes into even a building here. You have to get approval after pouring concrete as the concrete must have a certain thickness, the number of exits have to be inspected and approved, the walls have to be inspected etc. Nigeria can learn more than visiting shopping malls and blowing money from this country. I suggested it to a neighbour near our property in an "estate" in naija and of course he said it won't work and he is not contributing any part of his oversized land. apologies for digressing but no wonder we travel widely but learn nothing and don't replicate it. Our rulers and their family travel but don't know how developed countries' infrastructures work.
