The Global Wage Report 2018/19 released yesterday reveals that the world’s wage growth also hit a 10-year low, the last of its kind being in 2007.
President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa said the wage, which would come into effect January 1, 2019, would benefit about six million workers that currently earn R3,700 (N97,495).
One South African Rand exchanges for N26.35. This means South African workers would be earning N527 per hour: N4,216 per day and N126,480 per month. Their Nigerian counterparts currently earn N75 per hour, which is N600 per day (at eight working hours per day) and N18,000 per month.

ReplyDeleteCost of living in S/A is a lot higher than in Nigeria.
Our Government will not hear or read the one oooo, yet still de fight over N30k if possible or not.
ReplyDeleteNaija we hail deee
Stella our economy and currencies are different pls.
ReplyDeleteYou converted it to get that.
In rands it is 4,685 rands as minimum wage in their country and not 146,480 rands.
They also spend it in rands.
Pls note.
Exactly!
DeleteThey are spending it in rands, not naira, it isn't so much.
South Africa is so freaking expensive.
I wanted to add to your comments but I thought they suffice. When Nigerians start using other countries’ financial indices to calculate ours, I just laugh. Ask South Africans what that minimum wage can afford them in comparison to what our minimum wage can afford us. I have lived in South Africa for several years and know this. Let me use the US or Canada as an example. In Canada, you buy one canned drink like coke for CAD$1.50. That is over 300 Naira. You will use 300 Naira to buy three canned coke drink. Despite the obvious fact that little is paid in the Canadian dollar for one drink, the same amount is used to buy more drinks in Nigeria. Does it mean Canada is more expensive? The money is worth its value in their economy just like ours in our economy.
DeleteAs i pulled overoat a fuel station in Area 11, Abuja, An elderly South African woman asked how much fuel will fill up my tank (Toyota Camry). I replied 10k. She did her conversions in the car and said her would gulp like 38k. They pay more on utilities in SA and that's it's freaking expensive.
DeleteMy friend who just relocated to Canada having worked briefly with NB says drinking 3 bottles Heineken beer here in Naija isn't same over there as the exchange rate keeps making his head turn. It's more expensive even in canada
Thank you Anons & Mummy's girl. I am sure your contributions will enlighten d lot here.
DeleteThere are alot of Tin we enjoy here. And many we don't even pay for.
Let us be clear on this before some people with goat brains start blaming Buhari for this.
ReplyDelete1) Our GDI when converted to Rand cannot sustain the whole country.
2) Minimum wage is not restricted to only civil servants, it means, private sectors too will have to pay the agreed wage. Drivers, house helps will be earning that wage.
3) This is not a Buhari issue but a pre Buhari's issue.
4) When last did you and I pay our personal income tax?
5) Standard of living in S.A is very high! Accommodation and Food is not as cheap as we have it here in Nigeria
Nigeria would have been a better place if our past leaders got it right.
Just like I said on Instablog, may God kill anyone that has vowed not to let us enjoy Nigeria. It is just so sad. The suffering, managing and smiling is not funny anymore, it is not at all. Wetin! Na who we offend na? Who?

Ghana, Ivory Coast, Rwanda, Ethiopia and of course south Africa are all 100% better Economically than Nigeria yet Nigeria will not make us hear word with their loud mouth as if the whole Africa must evolve around them. Looking down on other Africans. Yes i said it. Economically You are the bottom of the pit so always remember that and focus on getting out.
