Osu Outcast System To Be Abolished In Eastern Nigeria...

Major traditional rulers in the South-East have set December 28, 2018 to abolish the controversial Osu caste system in the region.

In the Igbo tradition, the Osu are said to be dedicated to deities (Alusi) while the Ohu are said to be slaves by birth.

According to a statement on Tuesday, the event marking the abolition of the Osu caste system in Igbo land would take place at the Nri Palace in Anambra State.

The statement quoted the Regent of the ancient Nri Kingdom, Prince Ikenna Onyesoh, as saying it would be “spiritually suicidal” for anyone to continue with the obnoxious Osu practice after it had been abolished

He said, “Come December 28, 2018, more stringent spiritual implications will be pronounced from Ikpo Eze-Nri against such devaluation of mankind, after an extensive spiritual abrogation exercise.”

The statement also quoted the Eri traditional rulers as saying that they were set for the abolition.

  1. Great news, I concur to this new development. After all Jesus died for our sins so that we all can be one, I am not an Osu.

  2. This must be a great news...igbos should open up their arms to development in all spheres of life. Enough with all these backward and barbaric traditions practiced.

State segregation is also a problem amongst igbos...e. g my daughter can't marry an Imo man or my son must marry from Anambra. Nonsense and rubbish thinkings.

  5. Hmmmm. Liars!!! This is what they keep doing to the poor people, they’ll say this thing still individually they won’t let their own kids marry “osu.” They’ll be waiting for someone notable to start it first. I hope delta state will follow suit because their own is on another level o.

  6. Great news, great move!!!!!!
it's good to abolish it cos I don't see why innocent people should suffer for a crime they didn't commit/ aware of. No one chose where he or she was to be born , so enough of d discrimination. In my town it has gone into extinction cos d so called OSU are damn rich and have contributed immensely to d growth of d community, one even married d Igwe's daughter, they met in d 'abroad' both are professionals in their chosen field. Jesus died for us all never discriminated.

  7. Great news ,but for the traditional rulers to accomplish this they have to ensure their children are used to set an example by allowing them marry the “osu” people

  10. It's not just to abolish, there's need for a re orientation, if not, all these their efforts will amount to nothing.

The quest is, after the abolishing, will non OSU agree to intermarry with the erstwhile osus?

We all should read Things Fall Apart and No Longer At Ease by Chinua Achebe and see what happened there.

Even though Okonkwo's son went on to become a Christian and even abandon his father, he went on to become a cathechist and served the church for decades, but when his son told him about his wanting to marry an OSU he outrightly told his son Mba. His son demanded to know why seeing that he's a Christian, he told his son that he wasn't just a Christian but a radical one at that, seeing as he left his father's household, wealth, et al to join the church and the missionaries but that when it comes to the issue of marriage, he can't accept an osu as a DIL...even his mother told him that the day he weds an OSU, that is the day she would die and also curse him, also, that he shouldn't attend her burial ceremony.

So u see, Achebe captured vividly how the OSU caste system is perceived in Igbo land especially in places where its still being practised. Even Christians and people who fought for the church to be established are yet to accept it.

So, I'm saying that this is a good gesture( don't get me wrong), but there's need for a total reorientation. This shouldn't just be a day's event, it's something that will take months, even years for people to have a total turnaround.

  11. I remember a chronicle not too long ago about a couple having problems with this osu of a thing. The comments from even the igbos were awful nd quite unintelligent, but i wasn't really surprised about the comments.

    1. you dont have the rights and privileges of a full born. cannot become a titled person or a king and all your descendants will now become osu. its a shame and very pitiable.

Those abolishing it should lead by example too
