NAFDAC Warns Nigerians Against Consumption Of Puffer Fish

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday cautioned the general public against consumption of Puffer Fish.

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, gave the warning in a statement in Abuja. Adeyeye explained that the fish might contain the potent and deadly toxins tetrodotoxin and saxitoxin, which could cause severe illness and death. She said that some organs of the fish, such as liver and gonads (ovaries and testes), the skin and intestines typically contained the toxin.

According to her, cooking or freezing cannot destroy the toxin. She added that freezing and thawing of the product prior to removal of the toxic organs might result in the migration of toxin into the flesh of the fish.

“Restaurants and fish sellers are warned not to serve or sell this fish also known as puffer, swellfish, fugu, globefish or sea squad among other names, as this will severely endanger public health. Due to the potential health hazard associated with the fish, NAFDAC does not allow importation or sale of puffer fish. And we hereby alert the general public on dangers of consuming PUFFER FISH.

The puffer fish (also known as the blowfish and the toadfish) is a medium-sized species of fish that inhabits warmer, coastal waters around the world. The puffer fish is most well known for its unique and distinctive adaptations that it has to defend itself.

  1. NAFDAC I hope you are passing the right information and not trying to destroy someone's business cause of lack of settlement. Government rarely care about the masses, they are more concerned about themselves.

    1. Lol...no Becky...its actually dangerous with poisonous toxins. Its mainly eaten in China tho. Have never heard of it in Nigeria. But I heard the way its prepared requires lots of cautions.if u r not a professional Fugu chef, u can't prepare it, hence you poison everybody. I use to think of it as how we cut our chicken and being careful when cutting the bile part. The fish is sweet, expensive but dangerous too. Its better to avoid it and stick with our usual hake, Titus and croaker

  5. It's a very deadly fish. More deadly than a cobra snake!!!

If u eat the fish organs by mistake or even allow the organs to touch the flesh of the fish, u will be dead in 1 minute.
