So they married much earlier (so at least they could have issues) because most marriages were actually ended by death. Now people are easily living to 80 years and beyond so they marry much later and have time to try other partners and have affairs, etc. which is why most modern marriages end in divorces and separations. Marriage is becoming less popular because most people can't imagine living with only one partner for over 50 years!
