Nigerian Labour Congress Calls Off Strike....

The Nigeria Labour Congress has suspended its ongoing nationwide strike after the Federal Government agreed to reconvene the tripartite committee on national minimum wage on October 4.
The suspension of the warning strike takes effect from today.

Announcing the decision in Abuja on Sunday, the NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, stated that the labour action was suspended to enable the tripartite committee to hold its crucial meeting and conclude its work.

  2. NLC missed the point. Here are areas it should take on the government that have more effects on workers and the rest of Nigerians.

1- Yes workers need salary increase but NLC should press more on regular payment of salaries for Nigerian workers. Only FG and few states are paying salaries regularly in Nigeria.

2- Pension and gratuity payments are unduly delayed if paid at all. That is beside being too little for retirees to make a meaningful living after work. I have seen a retired CEO of government agency that is unable to buy sallah ram because his entitlements were not paid 11 months after leaving service.

3- Discrimination in employment. Only sons and daughters of the elite get employed. These days government employment are done in secrecy to children of politicians and elite who hardly need any employment in the first place. Why will sons of say well paced individuals and money bags snatch jobs available for the poor? Do they honestly need the jobs?

4- Salary dichotomy among government agencies. Why should NNPC, CBN, FIRS, NPA and others take 300℅ more than what their counterparts take in ministries and non juicy MDAs?

5- Taxation- even the little workers received as salaries are heavily taxes apart from taxes they paid as VAT while buying food and fuels in the market.

6- Provision of basic needs of life in housing, education, health care, water, electricity, security and roads.

These make take long to come but are more meaningful demands than mere salary increment that will be rubbished by inflation.

WHAT do you think my people?

  3. ✓..There are states that are still not paying the N18,000 minimum wage..NLC was silent..
✓..Many states are still owing their civil servants, months of salary arrears..Some are receiving half, less,or non at all of what they are suppose to earn..This is despite several Paris refund bail-outs that runs in to billions of Naira..NLC was silent..
✓..In many FG parastatals, ministries, and agencies;there are still months of dangling salary arreas being owed civil servants..NLC was silent..
✓..There are continious deductions in the salaries of many workers in the name of housing schemes for years..Where are the housing units..?..NLC was silent..
✓..There is huge disparity in salary structures in Federal government ministries, parastatals, and agencies..Same is happening in the State tier..Some are overpaid, whilst some are underpaid.NLC was silent..
✓..Many civil servants are still being owed promotion arrears;and it takes months before promotion is reflected, after been issued with letters..In the state tier, many civil servants give bribes before their promotion is reflected..NLC was silent..
✓..Vacancies for juicy FG ministries, parastatals, and agencies are reserved only for the children of the rich..The recruitment exercises are always marred with nepotism, ethnic and religious sentiments..There has never been federal characters in all the employements in the recent..Where is NLC in all these...?
✓..Working condition is poor;and job security is erratic..Yet NLC was silent..
✓..The pension and gratuities of civil servants are nightmares after retirement..There is backlog of pension and gratuities..The pension scheme is poor and ineffective..Yet NLC was silent..
✓.The NHIS scheme for civil servants is ineffective and unproductive..Yet,NLC was silent..
Why the sudden noise..?..Now tell me why would i not think that the ongoing strike by the NLC is not politically-motivated..It is a case of putting on a cap without a trouser..

  7. Wicked people...Strike against the salaries not being paid, and the high rate of unemployment and the vacancies that are reserved for only the rich and people from a particular tribe.

  10. They have been bribed. That's labour for you in Nigeria. They don't care about their subordinates. Only the leaders of labour take from the government secretly and then close their mouth on the injustice the civil servants go through. Is it not the same way that Oshomole took plenty money from past administrative all in the name of labour, to go into government now?
