Sunday In House Gists - Reporting A Confession:.....

I saw this topic on CNN and decided to bring it here cos of the coverage it had and the Responses...This is a very sensitive issue, please note this.......

Now the question is ''Should Priests be required to report child abuse when they learns about it during confession?''

39 comments:

  1. Yes they should report, it is just the right thing to do.

  2. It is not proper...the three people you can confide in outside your family are Priests, doctors and lawyers.

People will stop going to them for solutions/helps if they can't trust in them, and this will increase the vices in our society.

    1. You are a wise man from the East.

A priest was once stripped of his service and calling into priesthood after exposing a lady who had confessed of abortion and adultery. I think it is so wrong generally not just a priest to destroy the confidence people entrusted in you.

    2. Imagine if someone with an STD is afraid to meet a doctor and be treated cause he might expose him/her..the person will end up carrying the disease and infecting others.

Imagine where a Paedophile is depressed cause he is regretting his actions and attempting suicide, the only person he might confide in is his priest but he is scared the priest will expose him..he might end up killing himself or even molesting other kids if he isn't delivered or helped to overcome such vice.

Imagine a situation where I provided a substantial evidence to a lawyer regarding a criminal case and decided to remain anonymous for security purposes, yet the lawyer exposes my identity. It might cost my life, and even if it didn't..I will be afraid to disclose such information again.

    3. Sky, the paedophile better commit that suicide o. Shebi u know d only help a paedophile can get in this world is jail term, so deliverance is out of d question.

    4. Doctors are not priests so don’t lump them in the same scenario. If you have committed a heinous crime doctors will report you, they will inform you first that they will be reporting you before doing so.

  3. Yes!

Errrmmmm since the church is being soaked in 'irritating' sexual/child abuse scandal, who will report who?

  4. I am Catholic. I agree with the seal of confession however i believe serious crimes should be reported - murder, rape, etc. however if the seal is broken, people will no longer feel secure enough to confess those sins. It’s a complex issue.

  5. Under the catholic doctrine;an oath of secrecy was sworn..meaning whatever you confess to any priest dies with him and can never be discussed outside the confession stand/booth...
The highest the priest can do is advice you and then give you your penance..

Even if you kill the priest entire family and come to that same priest to confess;he can never report you to the police or anyone...

Its quite complicated but this is all i can explain now..

So to the question;the priest can never report matters of child abuse(or any other thing including murder) which was made as a confession else he risk a lot for himself including his priesthood..

    1. You don't get it.

The question starts with "Should. Should! Not can". Regardless of doctrine or belief system, it is necessary to do that which is morally right. That brings the question of what is morally right, what is acceptable, which is just and what is tolerable.

The era which the church reigned supreme is past. We live in civil society where regardless of faith, gender or or ancestral laws, the law of THE STATE comes first before any other .

Priests are first, citizens of a state before members of a church. Their Divine call should not hinder their allegiance to the State.

If the law states that sexual offenders should be punished, and the priest happens to know one, it is necessary for him to report. Shikina! The situation whereby the church tends to be a bidding place for criminals and all manner of nonsense Should please stop. If we allow every criminal hide under the umbrella of '"saved by grace", there will be chaos in the society. We will be having a situation whereby People will kill and just run to church for confession after all their sins will be forgiven.

I can recall when I went for a program and the Person preaching was like "God arrested me. I was a lone killer and robber on Benin-ore Express way. But God delivered me... Today I am a free man!''" The whole congregation clapped but all through that service I was like ....'oh thank God for you brother, did you do the time? Like this is an open confession so were tried? God delivered you in prison right?"

See, God is not an author of confusion. If Christ acknowledged the legitimacy of earthly government and submitted to the laws of the land ... We have no right to hoard things that will bring clarity and justice to other citizens.

    3. Hello Sugar..i got all what you said..

      Under the State----He should report;

      While

Under the Catholic doctrine----He shouldn't report..

He is under the catholic doctrine(which is a body of its own) and not the state,so he shouldn't report except the doctrine changes..

You cant work under any company and do things on your own terms even if the company is wrong..The least you can do is resign;or you stay and do as your Boss says..

If the state has any issue;they fight the company(which is the catholic church here) and not the staff of the company(which is the priest here)...

If that bridge of trust and confidence is shattered;do you think anyone would be going to any priest for a confession?? So how would the priest know about any case of abuse?

I understand what you are thinking but in this case;there is nothing the priest can do..
A priest is under the catholic church the moment he takes the oath of priesthood which is why if a priest dies today;his body is buried wherever the church decides(and not his family)...

This is all very deep and i will just keep writing epistles if i have to explain more.

Let me go and check my Beans wey dey fire first..

    4. I love the valid points both Martins and Sugar have raised. I think it is a sensitive issue but the onus lies on the priest. Let's say there's a serial killer going on a killing spree in a particular location and that killer decides to confess his deeds because of his religious beliefs knowing fully he's a wanted murderer and has caused a lot of pain. What would the priest do in such a situation?

      Delete
    5. Martins I like your reasoning, intelligence and listening skills. Can we be friends?

      Delete
    6. Hello @Anon 15:33;The priest would counsel the serial killer there and then at the confession booth;preach with some bible verses to the person if there is a little time(to allow others do their confession too) and also make the serial killer understand the consequences of their action(sin) before God and his fellow human..

After that, the priest gives him/her their penance and that is it oooo..

The priest cant even say anything to his fellow priest about whatever he discussed with anyone at the confession booth..
The priest cant even use anything discussed at the confession booth as a subject for his preaching(referred to as homily) on sunday/morning mass, crusade or anything...

The day the priest says anything to anyone;that is bye-bye to him and priesthood if reported to the Bishop and its verified..and funny enough;the state or country cant help the priest because the catholic church is a body of its own even tho they have different diocese in a state..

      This is quite complex truly..

    7. What if the priest tells him to go and report to the authorities as his penance.

    8. Martin! A. Child. Abuser.

I don't want to stress my brains about a serial killer which I'm sure will be caught even if he goes for 1000 confession. But I get your point tho.

We are talking about a helpless, innocent, naive, pure and untampered child lest say 0-12 years who at this age picks, repeat and assimilate happenings. This critical age where their personality, temperament and abilities are suppose to monitored and help shaped positively. Then one irritant abi animal pollutes not only their body but their psyche renders them vunerable.. some even become afraid of sex, some sex addicts... Injects 'undue' knowledge thereby causing confusion to this children.

Feeling remorseful He walks up to a priest and oga priest will be like "oh Pele.. don't do it again. Go you are forgiven". Because you know this children are confused and can't disclose this to their strict parent, the brother /Sister abuser does it again and goes for confession AGAIN! common priest let's blame Oga devil... Ngwanu sprinkle holy water, sins needs to be washed. It never ends until they are caught.

Reasons we have teenagers and adults with dark hearts. They've seen it all. Nobody listened to them , nobody fought for them. They become rebellious, depressed and sucidal. Even when Ada told Mama that papa raped her, she was told to shush it and not bring disgrace to the family.

*Shusssh.. Go your sins are forgiven don't bring disgrace to church******

I'm not a Catholic, not sure if I'm worthy to be called a Christian. But if I'm a priest, I will act first as a human being ;Report the animal. Then I will pick my holy robe and thank God for the wisdom to make sure such persons are rightly persecuted.

The Argument about church/state supremacy is one which have been right from classical antiquity. But it is necessary to state here that since the Catholic Church(Rome) no longer holds the world hostage with her laws which were too doctrinated by the way and since the emergency of statism and democracy which gave people the ability to govern themselves, choose leaders and lay down laws for civil coexistence, The law of the state/country is far higher than any other doctrine or whatever.

  8. Anything that is illegal ( according to the laws of that land) should be reported to the relevant authorities.

EXCEPT, if it is a confession to a lawyer, who is or will represent you in a case related to that matter.
Because your lawyer took an oath to treat all your information with confidentiality.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Well, they can't tell for religious, moral and social reasons. They are not supposed to judge anyone, no matter the kind of sin you commit. You can tell you as penance to confess your to the right authority

  11. Priests should ask offenders to go confess their crime

    ReplyDelete
  12. The law of the land is above any man made law and the oath of silence taking by priests were initiated by the Catholic body which is a subject to the country in which they exist.

Therefore if a pedophile confesses of his atrocities to a priest since the priest and the Catholic Church are under the law of the country, the priest ought to report it to the authorities because the crime of molestation of children is frowned upon by the country and there are laws protecting the child.

Not reporting crimes against the law of the land by the priests is a crime on its own and the church should be made to face the music in my own opinion.

Penance and 30 hail Mary's can't cure a pedophile.he needs serious psych evaluation and isolation away from kids and Penance can't do that for him.

As touchy as this subject is, I believe the overall Safety of the citizen should be prioritized against any oath of silence made by men...because the oath of silence was not put on priest by God.

    LEP😛

  13. Yes, yes, yes, this is a minor who has been abused. The priest must report. Ethic codes states that you must report any information passed on to you in confidence if someone was harmed, or harmed. For Christ sake that child's life has been destroyed and you are protecting a paedophile, who will confess and continue abusing that child, hoping to confess to another priest. una fear God o. What ever, you say, just sit back and consider if you or your child is the one being abused, would you like the priest to continue shielding the abuser because he is not to break a supposed code?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Rubbish, that is why the Catholic Church has so many cases of child molestation that has gone unpunished...confessions should be to God alone. If the act is ongoing then it must be reported. If offense was in the past then it could be overlooked. But the preis5 should try investigate that

    ReplyDelete
  15. That law in the Catholic faith must be reviewed. The confession has not helped much but is sort of condoning the bad habit. Imagine the multiple cases against the Catholic church recently......it shows they have abhorred bad vices in the name of penance.....all the offenders that should be locked up walking free

    ReplyDelete
  16. I am Catholic. And I will say this. Not all sins are crimes. Eg, lying is a sin, but it's not a crime. I think the priests should report crimes. After all, we teach penance and also teach teach that their are consequences for actions. If someone confesses to murder, are you as a priest going to keep quiet and let police hunt and hunt for the killer? Abeg, report the person and go for confession too that u leaked a secret.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The canon law actually allows a priest who is aware of a crime, pending or on the way to seek for permission to divulge such crime heard at confession .

    ReplyDelete
  18. The priest took an oath of secrecy. He cant reveal ANYTHING said to him during CONFESSION. The responsibility of a priest isnt the same as a law enforcer. He is like a sounding board, advisor and confidant, counselor.
