Senator Ben Bruce has reacted to a statement by Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole that not all media students should become specialists.
The Health minister was asked what he was doing to do to resolve the issue of doctors who have problem getting into residency programmes in Nigeria.
In answering the question, the Minister of Health responded saying “It might sound selfish, but we can all be specialist. Some will be farmers, some will be politicians. The man who sews my gown is a doctor. He makes the best gown.”
Ben Bruce writing via twitter said President Muhammadu Buhari should have fired the minister over such statement. According to the lawmaker, there’s enough shortage of doctors in the country and such statement is highly unwelcome. He noted that Nigeria needs more doctors and if the health minister is interested in the agricultural ministry, he should do well to tell his boss.

ReplyDeleteⓂc pinky
Im so disappointed with the minister, but then, what do you expect from a selfish politician in a shithole country? Atimes I wonder why I stressed myself studying MedSurg in this country.
ReplyDeleteTo the younger ones, if you want to study medsurg, the stress isn't worth it! Except you have plans of leaving the country after graduation. There are no jobs and Private hospitals pay peanuts and they work you out! Getting residency is another thing all together, even placement for housemanship is "man know man"
Well he's right, some where forced, some barely managed to pass, some became actors, actresses, governors, senators.
ReplyDeleteFinally someone with a thinking cap.
DeleteMAY ALL IS CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN BECOME MEDICAL DOCTORS & ENGINEERS. MAY THE ALMIGHTY GOD PROVIDE JOBS FOR THEM AS MECHANICS, REFUSE CARRIERS, TRAIN STATION ATTENDANCES, WARD MAIDS, ROAD SWEEPERS, DUMP SITE SCAVENGERS. AMEN
ReplyDeleteThat man should be sacked.
ReplyDeleteThis man has said nothing wrong,I studied law but I own a buka,I derailed from my field because I wanted something else...so please let him be
ReplyDeleteLaw and medicine two different professions
DeleteTnx anon.
Delete@chy aint they all professional courses?
This minister is officially wicked & mean
ReplyDeleteSame senate Ben Bruce sits in cleared this man and several other misfits in the government. Bet he cant exonerate himself from this mess. Senators will take cash to clear anyone. Greedy and incompetent bunch. That's what they all are.
ReplyDeleteIf he had made this statement for any other profession, I would have skipped this comment, but the medical profession is a no no!
ReplyDeleteWe know that having the opportunity to study medicine or any medical related profession is usually tough in this country. Universities don't just dash you the course if you didn't apply for it. And for one to apply for it, secure the admission and study till the end, it shows such individual is passionate about what he/she's doing. I mean, I know how many times I applied for med & surgery, pharmacy & nursing still I didn't get it even though I passed the cut off mark. It was painful. Now someone did, got the admission, graduated finish and you're saying they can go into farming. Is that not evil? If I wanted to be a farmer, would I waste my time applying there?
See the dumb fellows we have in high places in this country! Why didn't he go into farming or carpentry? Instead of using his office to right the wrongs in the sector, he's spewing gibberish.
I'm upset right now just remembering how my desire to be a Med Dr died like that let alone those who went through the rigours. With these kind of people at the helm of affairs, this nation is doomed.
Imagine his statement. I'm so disappointed in some of our leaders in this country.. God help us in this country o.
ReplyDeleteFor those saying they studied this and that and now own a Buka etcetera please do not generalise and put into your personal issues into other people’s choices.
ReplyDeleteMost doctors eventually practice and in all developed countries are given an option to specailize.
If you were forced to study medicine or law and now have chosen a different profession due to personal decision, lack of motivation, laziness or whatever please hold your tongue and speak to the hand.
His utterances were very uncouth and coming from a learned fellow very disappointing indeed.
For those who do not see anything wrong with his statement I fear for the country as you are part of the problem and should be removed ASAP.
For those that are saying dat way he said is not bad and dat they studied law and now have a Buka... I think u need to think well cos we are talking of bring a specialist here by the time there are no more specialist in the field again make sure ur Buka gives U money to go abroad seeking for the same specialists to treat u wen u are sick and need a particular specialist to attend d to u.
ReplyDeletePeople talking without thinking u are comparing we medical doctors to dat it law u studied .
Mtcheww
And that is why we are still an underdeveloped country. I'm just tired of this country, our government are so irresponsible.we provide everything for ourselves as a citizen. Clueless and useless set of people.
ReplyDeleteThat as always been their plans towards the middle and low class.
ReplyDeleteMr Minister Haba, after all the stress that statement is wrong Biko.
ReplyDeleteThis nincompoop minister of health must resign now. The nation needs a health leader who understands her critical manpower/capacity needs in relation to doctors and specialists. #AdewoleMustGo ##AdewoleMustGoNow ###FireAdewoleNow
ReplyDeleteHe should ashamed of himself to say such a thing. Youth in the country should rise up against him and call for his sack.
ReplyDeleteI'm too shocked to type, I didn't even believe a sane person could utter such words, so I believed his speech was doctored. With our deteriorating health sector, and exports of Drs abroad to seek greener pastures because of the terrible work environment and horrible pay, not to talk of difficulty getting residency placement. So I went to medical school for 8yrs, did house job n served to go n farm? Well it shows we ain't even needed here, many consultants are even leaving to start their lives afresh abroad, let alone me.
