Panic As Tremor Rocks Abuja

There is currently panic in Abuja due to the Tremors currently being experienced and some Residents of the affected areas who can afford it are quietly vacating the area for fear of an impending earthquake even though experts are quoted as saying there is no cause for alarm...

''There's been earthquake-like vibrations in Mpape and Maitama since Wednesday. This is day three and it's spread to Utako, Gwarimpa, Asokoro, Kado, Mabushi, Katampe extension, Wuse, Apo. My bed, sofa and freezer shook. I saw and felt it. A wall frame fell of. I'm leaving with my family to somewhere safe.''

Please if you live in any of these areas,i suggest you temporarily vacate your house in case an earthquake happens....dont take this lightly...

The government is supposed to have started evacuating people but they obviously dont know how serious this is......
What a pity!

  5. The last paragraph said it all. It is a clueless government and a lifeless one. I just hope Oshiomhole and Lai Mohammad won't accuse PDP for causing this tremor, as every bad thing now is been concorted by APC to be the handiwork of opposition.

  9. Saw this press release online let me paste it here
The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has assured Abuja residents of safety despite the earth shaking recorded in some areas.
Some of its environ, namely Mpape and Maitama districts of Abuja experienced some vibrations in the earth Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, which caused residents to panic.
A statement from the office of the director general, FEMA said that “earth tremor might be the “possible cause” of the earth shaking.
The agency explained the shaking is caused by stress in underground rocks resulting from human activities including blasting and mining of rocks.
While it noted that the situation is “abnormal”, it said there is no cause for alarm “as we are not in earthquake zone”.
“We have been inundated with distress calls in our watch room as a result of earth shaking happening around Mpape and part of Maitama district of the federal capital territory,” the statement read.
    “Whilst appreciating the call from the public, the FCT emergency management agency (FEMA) wish to make the following statements;
“That the possible cause of the earth shaking might be as a result of earth tremor.
“That it is a sign of seismic movement within the earth. This is caused by sudden break along a fault line which results in sudden release of energy that makes the ground to shake.
“It is caused by stress in underground rocks and may be due to rock blasting and mining activities in an area.
The residents are to note that there is nothing to panic s there is no likelihood of any earthquake disaster in Nigeria as we are not in earthquake zone.
“Therefore, we are urging all residents to calm down and be rest assured that the abnormal situation will soon stop.
The agency further gave out safety tips to be observed during such occurrences to avoid a disaster.
“Calm and do not panic. If you stay in a building, locate a safe room, drop down and take cover under desk or table and hold tight on it. You should stay away from windows and objects that may fall.
“If you are outdoors, find a clean spot away from buildings, trees and powerlines. If you are in a car, slow down and drive to a clean place, stay in the car until the shaking stops.”

  16. I don't expect the govt to start evacuation proceedings if no actual warning of an impending disaster has been given. If you want to leave off your own then so be it, but asking the govt to put an entire city under evacuation for something unknown is bizarre. When will you tell the govt to lift the evacuation order if the tremors continue for weeks or months? How will you make up for the lost productivity? What if nothing happens and the ppl lose faith in the govt so the next time an evacuation order is given nobody adheres to it. Tremors happen in earthquake zones all the time, even small earthquakes happen size 2-4 all the time and most ppl do not even feel them.
