Man Uses 2 Month Old Son As Collateral For Loan To Pay House Rent +Wife Consented

A 27-year-old man, Mr Daniel Bassey, and his wife, Magdalene, have been arrested for trafficking their two-year-old son for N180,000 to an agent in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Parading the couple at the headquarters of the Cross River State, Police Command in Calabar, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Hafiz Inuwa, said the duo were arrested in Calabar after a report by the mother of the child.

Inuwa said the mother of the boy reported to the Efut divisional headquarters that her husband took their only son, Moses Bassey, to an unknown person in Port Harcourt through one woman simply known as Mummy and collected some money.

He said efforts were on by the police to ensure that the baby was recovered.

During an interview with Southern City News on Tuesday, Daniel Bassey, confessed to the crime, adding that he gave out the child as collateral for N180,000 loan to help him pay his house rent .

“I did it based on the debt of N21,000 I collected from a friend to pay my house rent. There is no work in this rainy season and I am jobless. A guy from my area informed me that he knows a woman who lends money to people. That my friend told me that I can give out the child as collateral to get the money without necessarily selling him. The woman gave me N180,000 immediately after she received the child. After that, my mother in-law came and asked me of the child and I lied to her that I took the baby to my brother for holiday.

His wife, Magdalene, who hails from Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State, admitted that she consented to the act. She said she agreed to it so that they could solve their financial problems.

  1. Jesus is Lord!
How can a mother be so heartless? It would have been better for her to stand with the child on the road and beg. My God!Most men don't care about their kids because they can always get any woman pregnant

    3. Lazy and greedy man! In fact, lazy and greedy men all over the place! That woman didn’t consent to anything! The man just roped her in so it doesn’t look like he snatched a child from its mother. The wife too is trying to cover up for the husband as the brainwashed/traditionally oppressed woman that she probably is. She’s expected to stand by her husband no matter what, the only difference this time is that her bond and love for her only child would not let her be tied down and silenced. She had to report to the authorities because she knew she might never see her child again if left to her greedy husband. She really doesn’t want to get her husband into trouble, all she wants is her child and she wil expose anybody that tries to deny her of that, even if it’s her lord and master - mr husband. That poor woman is torn between protecting/standing by her husband and getting her child back. It’s so hard and dangerous to be a woman in Nigeria, I swear!

  9. They both connived and sold their baby period Don't belive this hogwash. They will breed like rabbits without self control, after all children are gifts for God, they say. They trafficked their child. Wicked souls. A lot of families do this but its not reported. They sell their teenage daughters as wives too.

  10. Child trafficking is a big booming business now. Some families deliberately procreate just to sell of their babies to orphanage owners..

  14. The child is the only asset they have so they used him. This is a global issue, everyday parents trade with their children, sell them to traffickers, marry them off at single digit ages so as to sustain the survival of the parents and other members of the family. Also this has been happening since time immemorial. I guess human nature never truly changes just the time we live in.

I hope the boy gets a solid education and have the fighting spirit to climb out of the poverty he was born into and make something out of himself.

  15. Gosh! This reminds me of the biblical story where two mothers planned to ÉAT'their babies in turns, because there was famine in the land...How sad and de-humanizing for a mother to trade a suckling toddler..What can be worse?
