ReplyDeleteFew people have awards named after them, so Audie Murphy, honored by the Spirit of America’s award given in his name, is one of an elite cadre. But then, he always was.
ReplyDeleteMurphy was the most decorated soldier of World War II. He became known for his courage and love of country as a second lieutenant in the infantry during World War II.
One January morning, he ordered his men to withdraw from the Reidwihr near Holzwihr, France, where German tanks had surrounded his troops. He stayed and gave fire directions by phone to supporting artillery. He climbed on top of a burning tank destroyer and fired its guns, killing about 50 enemy troops.
He received his Medal of Honor for his bravery June 2, 1945. He also received the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star with an oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star with a “V” device and oak leaf cluster, the Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters, and from the French, the Legion of Honor Grade of Chevalier, the Croix de Guerre with Silver Star and the Croix de Guerre with palm. From Belgium he received the Belgian Croix de Guerre with Palm.
His bravery catapulted Murphy into the public limelight and into Hollywood, where he began a movie career and business ventures. Murphy stood out as a hero when America generously recognized war heroes.
But the conclusion of the Vietnam conflict clouded the concept of military service in the 1960s and 1970s. Torn apart by Vietnam, a divided America was challenged to find heroes to inspire patriotism. Murphy once again came forward.
Organizers of the 1971 festival looked to Murphy to unite local residents in an Independence Day Celebration. He agreed to come to Decatur but never made it. He was aboard a small plane that crashed May 28, 1971, near Roanoke, Virginia.
His unexpected death sparked the Spirit of America’s patriotism award, named in his honor. The first award was given to Murphy’s family just weeks after his death.
The award is given now to those who have shown exemplary patriotism. Audie Murphy is considered a genuine American hero.
