photo from awelewe on twitter.
I don't know why I hate #amala ooo.
ReplyDeleteYou are not alone.
DeleteI am from Anambra but my NYSC was in Oyo State. Initially I was skeptical but being a foodie I tried Amala and Ewedu soup around U.I. Years later I was in Ibadan for a conference and had to go back there. I looove Amala and Ewedu. Didn't try gbegiri though. Tried banga soup but not owoh or starch. Seeing people battle with cutting the starch put me off.
ReplyDeleteI served in Oyo state. IITA in ibadan and there was this place we would go to eat amala, gbegiri and ewedu with Goat meat or orisirisi: it was heavenly.
DeleteI miss eating in bukas, nothing like it. Another thing I miss so much is Agege bread and Ewa agoyin especially when the beans is put inside the bread.
Me and u na twins. I sama my beloved ewa agoyin this morning amala is next.. cnt wait
DeleteHa ha ha deenity, we be twins thru thru 😂😂😂😂😂
DeleteOMG.. See correct amala
ReplyDeleteYou are not a Nigerian if you have not eaten ofada and orisirishi

DeleteIs it that place they sell with jazz? The main owner died last year, so her girls are managing it now.
DeleteDunno if they sell with jazz but people will park n fill up everywhere even on Sunday morning.
DeleteThere's also a joint around lagos busstop
DeleteChei.!! I remember Lagos bus stop. Those good ole days when l used to hang out in Accra Street.
DeleteThere's a place on Woji road called 'Ounje Ayo' Amala joint. Gba bee.
Delete..
Abula is the healthiest meal of traditional Nigerian food combinations. The Amala is the healthiest swallow, while Ewedu and Gbegiri is really good for you. The stew is mostly tomato and is great for you too.
ReplyDeleteTrue...gbegiri being pure protein while ewedu is super rich in iron n vitamins.
DeleteI have not and will not eat that food. that food irritates me.
ReplyDeleteif you have not eaten
nsala soup with catfish and pounded yam ,
fio-fio and achicha ede,

Amala and ewedu irritates me.I can't even look at some one eating it.
DeleteIn addition to that Abacus or as my people will call it jigbo, is baee😍😍😍
DeleteSorry i meant abacha** before anons start menstruating under my comment
DeleteI affirm to the Nigerianess of the foods you guys mentioned here plus Achicha na akidi... But I think you should be open minded and Try Amala + Ewedu + Gbegeri. As a legit Igbo somebody, that meal blew me away
DeleteI am Nigerian I have not eaten owo or starch or gbegiri I schooled in Lagos and I am from delta state
ReplyDeleteNot deltan but unfortunate anioma
DeleteDuuh! I don't like ewedu and I've tasted gbegiri once. Never again.
ReplyDeleteEwa agoyin or bole maybe?
Agree with you Amaka. Same with me. Cooked gbegiri and amala once in secondary school home econs (food and nutrition.) First and last time. No to ewedu. Don't like how it looks and cannot eat it.
DeleteI can eat Amala but not ewedu/gbegiri
DeleteMba nu
If you want to eat correct amala, go to Ibadan. That one na amala with PhD.
ReplyDeleteAmala for Lagos still dey crèche.
I've not eaten amala before, neither have I eaten owo or starch. Its not popular here.
ReplyDeleteThe sight of this food alone de make me dizzy. Not to talk of that gbegiri. The greenish look de turn my belle. I cannot be caught eating it. Even if hunger de wire my belle. I have tried to eat it but I froze the day I stood in front of the seller who was busy spinning the gbegiri with all its draw-draw and could not even say what I wanted. The woman just de vex sey I de waste her time as I was undecided. . Naa. I will pass on it any time and any day. I cant even watch anyone eating the gbegiri in my presence cos I go just embarrass myself. In my place stew is stew and not in any form called soup. Not for me sha. But amala any day, I will grab with all my power. Lol.
ReplyDeleteThat meal up there is just it! I've eaten that combo but with ishan, pomo and all manner of orishirishi. Reminds me of a trip I had to Ogbomoso years back. Chai! I think that was the origin of my love for amala.
ReplyDeleteStella, you keep talking about goat meat with body odour. How will you know it has body odour when it's already cooked or is the taste different?

DeleteAmala I have eaten with correct ogbono and okra soup but ewedu is something I've never eaten. I don't eat soup outside my house and it's never been prepared at home even my dad that was somewhat a Yoruba man never prepared ewedu. Gbegiri is beans soup right? I'm passing for life. Starch no. Banga is ofe akwu I'm about to have some.
ReplyDeleteMe i love my abacha,Onugbu soup,Nsala etc.
ReplyDeleteBanga i can take with anything else but starch, they are for cloths.i have no problem with Amala, just the ewedu. The whole broom things...i dont know, its just like using a child's never before used potty as plate...
ReplyDeleteYes amala and gbegiri with Ewedu is bae. I sabi prepare the gbegiri ehn....you can even chop your fingers along.
ReplyDeleteThe starch and owoh soup, i ate it some years back but the starch is too strong and the way one will do the fingers to cut it is another wahala.
I am ijaw. I love Banga Soup like none other. I do loooove starch too. I live in the states and still eat starch. In fact, let me call my cousin and make sure our next Banga and starch package is coming. Stella, you want some??

ReplyDeleteUkodo nko? And Banga Rice from a local fresh food market? Wow i miss my waffi childhood sha. Exploring with all kinds of food but i am not from Delta. Just did high school in that beautiful little town where almost everyone knows everyone or knows something about everyone.
ReplyDeleteEwwwww..... anything with stew I cannot use to eat swallow.
ReplyDeleteAmala, Gbegiri and Ewedu combo is the shiznitz. I made some this afternoon and I gave my guest who blatantly refused to eat. *side eye to her*
