The Joke Is On Us

Do you want to know why the Joke might be on you (Us)?

The nauseating pictures and video below were taken yesterday at Ilasan Estate Rd., Jakande, Lekki, Lagos state.

Located on this street are:
1. LASTMA office
2. Samuel Adeniyi Aiyeyemi Health Centre (A government-owned Primary Health Centre)
3. A school.and at the entrance of the street is a police station.

At the time the pictures and videos were taken, nursing mothers as well as expectant mothers were there for antenatal and postnatal appointments respectively (at least I saw both pregnant and nursing mothers being attended to). Imagine a health centre in this kind of environment! A filthy environment! Just look at the entrance.

I gathered from a staff of the health centre that the place is closed down whenever it rains heavily, just like yesterday's rain. Patients are referred to another Primary Health Centre until the flood recedes.

As if that was not enough, a mild drama played out at the LASTMA office (see attached video). While I was taking pictures, a towing vehicle belonging to LASTMA brought in a Honda car whose owner may not even be aware of the disappearance of his car from where he may probably have illegally parked it. A vulcanizer ( a.k.a resident LASTMA vulcanizer, a.k.a certified LASTMA vulcanizer) whom I had earlier seen deflating the tyre of another vehicle parked on the street, proceeded to deflate one of the tyres!

So the owner of the car will first bail his car and then pay the vulcanizer N500 (as mentioned by a voice in the recording) to inflate it afterwards!

The crux of the matter here is that Lagosians, and by extension Nigerians, do not demand anything from their leaders. Fast-forward 2019 most of the people on this street and those present at the health centre will go ahead to collect N500, a tin of tomato paste, 1kg bag of rice etc.

Now we are busy celebrating defections and counter-defections. We have turned the political parties to football clubs and the politicians are the star players whose fans we have become.

THE JOKE IS ON US.

  1. The Joke is really on US. I really hope people wake up and demand more from their leaders. Same thing. I have lived for 33 years, am my community remains the same. Still someone comes every four years with ridiculous promises. The problem is that people do ask these leaders, how exactly will you achieve these promises? What happens if the Federal allocation does not exists. I will keep saying this, we cannot move forward when our leaders only wait for Federal Allocation which they will stuff in their bags. Hold your leaders accountable.

As if some parts of mainland aren't worse. Iv lived in vi since 1989 and now married living in lekki never lived near anywhere like this. We have the good sides and the bad sides just like every area in Nigeria.
Everyone knows Jakande, Agungi and Alpha beach side are water-logged. So I wont even rent or build there.
If they give you house in Parkview tell me you wont take it. Poverty mentality.

  7. Gosh!!! Most Nigerians are dirty mehn.... I was watching a Nigerian movie, and I saw one of the actresses, open a cookie pack and threw the pack away on the street, it was a disgusting sight to behold. I just couldn't continue with the movie.

How can people threw things on the streets, even though you provide them with trash bins and bags, some will still find ways to throw trash on the streets.
I believe there are Nigerians who takes delight in seeing dirts on the roads.

Fellow classmates would be like ‘ why you dey form neat. Wetin ground dey there for’. These are people who travel to the ‘abroad’.

  9. Until we come to the realization of what true governance is, our politicians will continue to take us for a ride. The location in the images above is under a ward headed by a Councillor, the ward is under a local government headed by a Local Government Chairman, the local government is under a state government headed by a Governor. I can bet that 95% of people living in Lagos do not know the names of the councillors representing their respective wards. I am one of such Lagosians.
We need to start making our political representatives answerable to us starting from the grassroot up to the presidency.
Most of the issues bedeviling us in our society begin from lack of accountability from the local level.
We need to wake up otherwise these political jobbers will continue to enjoy their game of chess with our destinies.

    2. @Isaiah, you can start by creating awareness on what good governance is. Influence people around you to avoid political apathy as much as they can (I understand the frustrations associated with getting registered and getting PVCs). Educate people around you about the dangers of allowing ethno-religious sentiments becloud their sense of judgement and reasoning when dealing with political and social issues. Encourage them to do what is right and just. Teach them the importance of getting their acts right at the local level. Let them understand that structures are erected from the bottom and not from the top. Let them know that they need a comprehensive attitudinal change as regards their expectations from the government, that way, they won't collect hand-me-downs from politicians, they won't defend politicians on the basis of ethnic, religious, and party affiliations, they won't clad themselves in "aso-ebi" and dance away their destinies and the future of their children for a few hours at political rallies only to end up sulking for the next four years.
Teach them to question their senators and house of rep members when they come to them with constituency projects that only involve dolling out tricycles, grinding machines, motorcycles and other ridiculous items that only end up in the hands of a few party faithfuls.
Dear Isaiah, I could go on and on and on. However, if you succeed in getting just a hundred people to do understand the aforementioned points, you would have armed yourself with a hundred soldiers for a revolution. It begins with a change of orientation and ideology. It begins with you and I. Thank you.

    3. Which kind hold accountable. Was it not on this blog I complained about a PHCN officer that resumed work 1hr late and did not have the decency to apologize for being late after keeping people waiting and somebody opened her gutter mouth to call me names for complaining.
Abeg, forget it. Nigeria is gone. No hope again cos the accountability is not just for our leaders but also we individuals.

  10. For this country na the more you look, the more wahala you see. The government and the citizens don't care anymore, everybody is about what concern him and his immediate family.

For over two months in my street there has been leakage from one of the pvc pipes belonging to the Lagos State water corporation. The continue effect of the leakage has started wearing the surface of the tarred road due to erosion. Just a month ago one of their pick up vans was passing my street and incidentally fell inside the gutter, I personally helped the driver to bring out the truck and equally used to opportunity to show him the water leakage in my street, it has been weeks. Last week I wrote them on twitter and copied the letter to Lagos State government and Ambode, yet nothing has been done.

We don't have any government in Nigeria!

  11. The joke is really on us. Because after all these, some people will still vote for this government instead of voting them out.

  12. Yen yen yen you people will just be writing and give no solution. Start the revolution na or it is just to sit and be complaining? Any one can do that. You are not the first nor will you be the last to write articles complaining. The question we should ask you mr/ms article writer is whatchu gonna do abt it?!

    3. And another quick solution: Stop collecting hand-me-downs from politicians during elections. Stop defending them when they err irrespective of their ethno-religious leanings

      Delete
    4. The exact point ive been making all day long. We all know there is a problem, the question/focus now is WHAT DA HELL IS THE SOLUTION? Not reiterating the problems...Who ever can come up with a workable practicable solution should speak up!

    5. Olantunji thank you for answering him well

    6. The revolution starts with awareness. It neither has to be violent nor confrontational.
When people with good intentions make efforts, they usually find themselves alone at the war front because of the attitude exhibited in your criticism. Take for instance Dr. Oby Ezekwesili. There is no name she hasn't been branded. No matter what you try to do, there will always be people waiting just to make you feel bad. Anyway, except you are only interested in entertaining yourself via blog visits, I suggest you think through expository write-ups before charging at the writers.
Not all of us may get the chance to occupy government/political positions, but through platforms such as this, we will give it our best shot at re-orientating as many people as we can. I am a political scientist/sociologist and it is my job to analyse the society and expose the ills in it. I believe those living on that street will appreciate whatever help this exposition can offer their plight. The pen is mightier than the sword. Thank you.

    8. Oga writer you still have not given a PRACTICAL solution that is going to work. You say people should not collect money from them during election? Are you aware that poverty is at an all time high? How do you tell a hungry man or a man who cannot afford basic primary needs not to collect money? How is that ever going to work?

Another solution you gave is the people should stop defending them because they are from the same tribe or religion. My goodness how is that ever going to work? On this blog alone people hate on others just because they are from another tribe or religion. We keep deceiving ourselves saying one Nigeria. That is a very big lie. The truth is that all tribes are never going to get along but instead of all tribes to be civil with each other na lie.

You should know under developing the society is one way they (the looters)are using to check the masses. As long as poverty is still very high, there is no solution to the issues at hand . Poverty causes corruption, poor reasoning, defending oppressors because of peanuts....hand dey pain me

      Delete
    9. Dear anonymous, if you don't find my suggestion practical please provide yours. If you think poverty is enough excuse to keep collecting peanuts from politicians on a four-year interval basis, twale to you. You say all tribes are never going to get along? Please read about the history of Rwanda. Learn from the Hutu and Tutsi tribes. And if you think cessation is the solution, you are in for a shocker! Ask the people of South Sudan. You probably don't understand the effects of war and bloodletting.

  15. The govt can surely do more, but the people need serious reorientation. The things people do claiming ignorance or 'i don't care', and then come out to shout 'Govt should come and help us'baffles to no end. Or how do you explain people in this kind of pictured area emptying all their stored trash into the floods that harass them, saying the water will carry it away. Carry to where? The little amenities the govt provides are sometimes treated with such disregard and lack of care because 'na govt get am' so it belongs to no one in particular.
People also need to understand poverty is not equivalent to or license to filth. A lot of Nigerians are simply dirty and careless of their environment. Said not as an insult but mere fact. And when you try to correct the ones around you politely, you get some very funny responses.
Sometimes, people get the kind of govt they enable and deserve o.Start with the man/woman in the mirror to becoming better, then join hands to disable bad govt and enable a good one.My opinion.

    1. @Anonymous...you are very much on point. Respect! The funny responses you get from people is pointer to the decadence in our education system. When certain people can't justify their points or provide a reasonable response, they resort to insults and name-calling. We have a long way to go but I believe we will get there.

  16. May una no vex oh but how dirtiness take concern government? No body should tell me it's the road that caused the dirty estate oh because my village is not as dirty as this

    ReplyDelete
  17. See how dirty the place is. So will they battle with Bad road and dirt too? Lagos state under AMOBODE is very very dirty. LAWMA was working well. They move dirt thrice weekly and they visit EVERY STREET. This new Kaleidoscope brought in by the present government is just occupying space with no matter. They are very useless. They are just driving fancy truck and vehicles, occupying space along Ogudu GRA and Osborne Ikoyi. I stay close to a canal, we had to put signs and built temporary fences to stop people from dumping refuse inside the canal. We have taken to calling mallam to evacuate refuse, only God knows where they dump them.Lagos is populated and generates high waste. The roads are very very terrible too. Amobode isnt felt. Fashola was one poltician i stood under the sun to vote for because Lagosians FELT his and could SEE the dividends of his government.
The other saturday, i stood at the balcony and saw over 15 canoes doing illegal dredging, i took pictures to send to SDK but i felt since my comments are in Stellz Banga soup pot, the mail will just be used to prepare Egusi peppersoup and unripe plantain. Every Saturday this guys move heaps of sand and are making money.
God provide us with people who care about their Citizens and their welfare. We cant all have connections to seat of government to get jobs and money but we can enjoy good roads, good health centers, good water, Stable electricity etc...

      Lmaoooo.
What does that say about priorities?
Lagos city is terribly dirty and smells horribly.
I had thought that transportation and the environment would be one of the cardinal points of this administration.
I keep hearing 'tourist destination' 'tourist destination'. How? Where?
When you go to 'tourist destinations', is this how their cities look like?
We need to stop having these incredibly clueless politicians at sensitive positions.

Nigeria has turned to the kind of huge joke that everyone is tired of laughing at.
