NYSC - Off To Serve!!

...Enjoy the Frustrating, hilarious and annoying brouhaha a fellow Nigerian had to endure to serve his Father land!

I've read countless Service Year Boulevard from blog visitors. I knew I'll send mine someday.

You know that feeling and sense of optimism you get when you've written your final year examination and you've printed T-shirts with your name inscribed on it.

I snapped pictures and got my white signed by colleagues. The next thing on my mind was NYSC. The above Scenario took place in the month of November 2016.

To my utmost dismay, names of students who haven't cleared their results was posted on the department's notice board and my name was included.

By the way I graduated from History and International studies department of the University of Calabar.

In case someone is wondering why the above narration should be included in my service year boulevard, well it's because my experience taught me never to judge people who haven't ''graduated'' yet from school.

I corrected my results three times with the then Examination Officer. When time for mobilisation came, my name wasn't included.

Surprisingly those who had excess Carry Overs were included on the list.
The rot in our educational system is a gangrene that can't be healed or even treated.

The next thing I was told by the examination officer was that ''The data Base has Crashed''.

Telling my parents that my name wasn't on the list of those going for NYSC was one hard and traumatic moment for me.

Let me cut this narration short.

It took the intervention of a new Examination Officer who is seen by many as strict (God bless her) for my result and other students results to be ''Corrected''.

So for one full year I was just going to school to know if my result has been ''corrected''.

March 2018 was the month my batch was to be mobilised.

The department pasted the list of those mobilised and my name was included. I went home to tell my parents this good news.

2 days to Camp we didn't see our names on the NYSC portal.

After making enquiries with threats of leaking the rots going on in the department to the authorities, we were told that the man who was responsible for sending our names to students affairs submitted the list late.

Apparently this man deliberately delayed submitting our names so that he can include names of those who will pay him.

I was ired and frustrated after getting this information from a staff in the department.

None of us joined batch A 2018 in the department as a result of one man's selfish act.

Batch B was scheduled for August.

At this point I was frustrated at the whole idea of NYSC and even academy related activities except for my teaching job.

I was posted to Kebbi state. I had to look up in the Map to locate Kebbi state and it took me some mins to do so....

It's in North western region of Nigeria. It's one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria. With a relatively low cost of living.

Did I mention that all these while none of us had gotten our certificates?
Camp opened on Tuesday 24th July.

I got my certificate on the day camp had opened. Getting my certificate was another issue I don't want to bore you all with.

From Cross River State to Kebbi state is a two days journey.

I finally left on Wednesday, July 25th. I got to Abuja and spent the night there.

The journey from Abuja to Kebbi the next day was about 13 hours.

I arrived Camp on Thursday 26th July. I was in platoon 5.

My platoon performed abysmally poor in camp activities except in Cooking and Filling the Cup with Water competition.

I participated fully in camp activities.

I took 3rd in eating competition.

Having read tales of BV's who had served, I was mentally ready for the rigours of camp life.

NYSC has taught me that mankind are the same all over. We are only separated by language and religion.

I was amazed that people had boos and baes in just few days. Boys used Mammy Market to prove their love for their new found girlfriends.

As a child of God that I is na I didn't even see any girl that I can make my boo.

Camp food was delicious most days and Poor somedays.

On days we were served Jollof rice I always had two or more rounds.

I had colleagues in the room who felt too big to eat NYSC FOOD. I made good use of their meal tickets judiciously.
They were Rushing Mammy Market food while I was diligently rushing NYSC food.

I'm sure by now readers will think I went to eat in NYSC Camp.

An incident occurred in camp.
Some corpers (a female included) were caught smoking marijuana.
I wanted to snap and send the story to you Stella but on a second thought I allowed it pass.

They were pardoned after crying and begging the camp officials.
Fellow corpers equally pleaded on their behalf too.
The sun is extremely hot and the wind blows hard here.

I was posted to INEC headquarters in the state capital. They don't give accommodation and they don't pay corpers.

I hope to send us Chronicles of my PPA.

Please Stella you can post it in segments if it's too long.

Happy birthday in arrears darling Stella. Your ink will never run dry.

*WOW,you really suffered oh..And now you got INEC posting where they dont pay?chai !!!....I am sure you will make loads of money with the incoming election unless your village people are on your case...lol

  3. I served in kebbi state. Initially Did all I could to get relocated out of the place but when it finally came out, I rejected it coz I found out I enjoyed the place. Cost of living was indeed cheap and God help you if you speak a little Hausa bcoz that gets you lots of favors. Election time there is the ishhh. Hausas generally love politics and omo I made more than 300k during that period on just dashing money ooo for just being a corper (kofa) as they call it. My ppa was argungu general hospital. As an igbo girl, my stay in kebbi was pleasant.

  5. wow! my service year was fun too. I camped in Katsina (Mani camp). almost two days journey from my state. but I had to redeploy cos I wasn't feeling the place at all. but the camp was very neat compared to others. I was in platoon 5 and I had so many toasters on my neck including camp officials as a fine girl that I is. I remember one igbo guy that was on my neck. what's that his name again o.... can't even remember. The guy was always taking me to mammi. that was his daily routine. the guy spent money sha o. he was from a wealthy family and was even willing to help me work my posting to his hometown sef. but I nor want. after everything, few days to when we were about leaving camp, he started telling me how much he loves me, that he would want us to spend some time together after camp, that we should lodge in a hotel before leaving. I just smiled and nodded my head like mumu. I said OK. no problem. Shebi it's just to lodge. He kept on spending and buying things for me till the last day of camp. After getting my posting letter, I switched off my phone and blocked his line afterwards. I didn't hear from him again. don't even know if he is still alive. the guy really tried sha. too many other tales jare. I'll send in mine soon.

  6. ehen.... during my service year too, I didn't participate in camp activities. I was just too lazy. match pass was like death sentence to me. the sun in Kt was something else. I couldn't stand under the sun for more than 20mins else my legs will start shaking. I was always going to the clinic that I became a regular customer there. sometimes I'll just go there bcos I don't wanna participate in match pass. I'll tell them I came for checkup. the docs will examine me and tell me there's nothing wrong with me that I should go and join my mates in d field. I'll just start crying and tell them "but sir, I'm sick, I have fever, I can't see, I have waist pain, I have sore throat". chai... only me? even the doctors were confused. they had to give me exemption and told me to stop disturbing them. for where? I told them to admit me in the clinic that I needed rest. they knew I was just trying to dodge camp activities and all that. when I saw it was not working, I quickly ran to join red cross. that was my saving grace. the head of red cross accepted me at once cos he had been crushing on me. infact I was even crushing on him too. we became really close and people thought we were dating. but I was just using red cross to while away time jare. when my mates will be matching under the sun, I'll just sit under one the trees there and be enjoying cool breeze. I cannot go and kee myself cos of nysc. I really miss Katina. I miss my platoon officers. I miss my friends and all my toasters. I miss mammi market. I miss my troublsome roommates and their plenty wahala. I miss Mani camp seriously. this is part 2. part 3 loading.....

  7. part 3. there was this camp official that was loving me back then in Kt. Mr Ibrahim something something. I met him when I went to exchange my oversized shoe at the store room. he took my phone number and he started calling me o. telling me he will influence my posting to govt house, free accommodation and all. yimu. he even said I should send my details to him that he is the one in charge. after sending him my details, he started inviting me to come to his lodge. then he had already started calling me baby. anytime he calls me, he will say "hello baby when are you coming to see me?" meanwhile I was calling him "sir". he said I should calling him "sir" that I should call him baby. I told him I wasn't comfortable with that. for where? he insisted I call him baby. old man for that matter. I and my friends were just using him to eat breakfast cos he was always at d mammy market. then he will invite me to mammy and I'll drag my friends along with me. those ones were bulldozers in the first place. when he saw that i was not interested, he borrowed himself brain and stopped calling me. we later found out that he was just impersonating... no level

  8. part 4. life after camp was boring. no more free food from toasters in mammy market cos I was already getting used to it. most of my toasters redeployed. katsina is cool and peaceful. but the only problem I had was their language. it was very hard for me to learn how to speak Hausa. aside the language barrier and sharia law, I enjoyed the place to the fullest. they do not reject money there. even if the money is torn beyond recognition, they'll accept it. the weather is something else. when it's hot, it's extremely hot like fire and when it's cold, hmmmm it's extremely cold. the people are nice and they respect Corp members very well. hmm... what else? ppa palava loading. part 5

  11. My camp was also at dakingari, batch B, 2018. It was one of the best moments of my life, I was in platoon 3, and I loved parade cuz it made me shed some weight. My parents forced me to redeploy to Lagos, I really regret it though, wish I could stay in that state.
