Nigerians In Ghama Must GO!!!

I got a frantic call from Ghana the other day. It was from Lillian. The Ghanaian authorities were shutting down shops belonging to Nigerian traders at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.

The Inter-Governmental Task Force set up by the Government of Ghana to regulate retail trade had arrested about 50 Nigerians. Many of them were detained. “The situation is not good at all, someone needs to come to their rescue; “ she said.

This is not a new matter. Across Africa, the Nigerian trader is often resented by the local population, on the grounds that Nigerians are either taking over their businesses or their women. But the reported attack on Nigerians in Ghana is most disturbing. Both countries share many affinities: historical, cultural, political and social. Nigerians love to go to Ghana. It is less than an hour away by air and it is a stable, organised society.

Since the reversal of fortunes between both countries, with the Ghanaians who used to flock to Nigeria in the 70s and 80s, now enjoying better prosperity, Nigerians are now the ones going to Ghana in droves in search of economic opportunities or a place to enjoy some sanity, away from the maddening crowd at home. Given our people’s enterprising spirit, it is not unexpected that Nigerians will dominate the retail market in any country where they are allowed to settle in large numbers.

In 1994, Ghana introduced a law called Ghana Investment Promotion Centre Act (GIPCA), Section 19(3) of which says “in the case of trading enterprise involving only the purchasing and selling of goods, which is either wholly or partly owned by a non-Ghanaian, there shall be an investment of foreign capital or its equivalence in goods worth at least $300, 000 by way of equity capital and the enterprise shall employ at least 10 Ghanaians.” Non-Ghanaians are also required to have a residence permit and a business permit. In the past six years, the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has been urging the GIPC to take action against foreigners involved in retail business in Ghana who they accuse of pushing them out of business. There are over 1, 000 retail shops owned by non-Ghanaians across Ghana, most of them by Nigerians. Aggrieved Ghanaian traders want those shops shut down.

In June, the GIPC issued a notice asking the foreigners to obey the provisions of the GIPC Act or close down their shops by July 27. Most of the Nigerian retailers cannot afford $300, 000 – in Naira, that is about N108 million! The businesses they run do not need up to ten staff. These are people selling phones, textiles, electronics, or recharge cards or engaged in some other small-scale enterprise in the markets. Whereas the Ghanaian government has said the law is not targeted at Nigerians, the truth is that Ghana does not want foreigners in the retail business. Foreigners are not allowed to drive taxis in Ghana or run kiosks.

Ghana’s trade protectionism raises a question: how far can an ECOWAS member-state go in protecting the sovereign interests of its nationals in the context of binding ECOWAS protocols? The governments of Ghana and Nigeria should take the on-going development seriously and prevent a breakdown of people-to-people diplomacy. In Kumasi, members of the Ghanaian Traders Association reportedly attacked Nigerian traders and the latter are also threatening to retaliate. It shouldn’t get to that.

    1. It's sad to admit this but Nigeria is a cursed land. With all the natural resources that we have we shouldn't even aspire to move to other countries for greener pastures. Our Country is a mess. It's cursed from all the atrocities that have been committed on it. No need to pray for Nigeria cause no amount of prayers can help Nigeria, it's better to pray for yoyrself and your loved ones.

    4. Did what? The way Ghanaians flooded Nigeria back then, if we should do same, they won't be able to take it. Even then, we gave them an option. We provided transportation for them, We did not fight, harass or molest them in any way.

  5. Before any of you will come here and be castigating Nigerians livng in these African countries; just know that Nigeria is the centre of entertainment for these Africans.

They come to live in Nigeria, even buy lands and build houses in Nigeria, nobody disturbs them. They rent shops and do their daily sales and nobody destroy their properties or disturbs them.
Nigerians are one of the most accomodating people on planet earth.

Some of These Africans also indulges in illicit activities in Nigeria and Nigerians doesn't classify all of them as the same.

The jealousy and envy in their hearts against Nigerians is so bad.
And oh, our celebrities never speaks against these inhumane treatment against their own. They'll rather promote these countries and be shoving it in our throats.

    2. On this I agree. Even here in the UK, Ghanians hate Nigerians die. They don't want to hire a Nigerian, they don't want to employ a Nigerian and all sorts of nonsense. They just generally hate Nigerians yet Nigerians are very accommodating.

    3. Thanks 11:35. Nigeria is extremely lawless. Citizens are npt protected, if you see the way these Lebanese, Indians, Chinese etc are maltreating Nigerians in our own country you will be ashamed. They use Nigerians in their factory for long hours under inhumane conditions and pay them peanuts, they rape and sexually assault the females. I have seen where a Lebanese man police escort jumped from his car to beat up a Nigerian man for not clearing for his 'Master' to buy fuel first. Nigerians are slaves in their own country. Every country thinks of their citizens first but not Nigeria, South Africa has started taking lands from the whites to make it evenly shared between blacks and whites same thing Mugabe did in Zimbabwe , initially one will think its wickedness but its not. We have to think wisely to prosper our country.

    4. shut up bitch...u just comment rubbish. so its celebrities that will talk for us? howmany celebrities spoke up in Ghana? a country that has no systems and processes in place like naija will always suffer. e.g are employment laws enforced? i know some Chinese companies who treat employees anyhow. all countries give priority to citizens then visitors, also if visitors behave in ways that contradict your laws or do anything that put your citizens to risk you take decisions that will favour your people....honestly dont know all the facts of this particular issue but if it is true then our government should intervene and get them to back off legitimate naija buisness owners..

  9. I'm a Ghanaian; 1st of all the situation is not as serious as being portrayed in this write up but some Nigerians need to know how to abide by law not only in foreign countries but even in Nigeria. Trust me you won't be a responsible Nigeria and condone some of the things some of your country men do here. Every country has its rules and laws. There are some works and trades reserve for just citizens. Why not abide by that and leave that to the citizens?

Let me interpret what the Ghana authorities are saying in a lay man's language. When Chinedu brings goods or wares into Ghana; sell it to a Ghanaian bulk seller to retail. Don't go on the streets or market to retail. Now how is that hard? Nobody is asking you not to live here or do business here just follow the rules but no. They will go and start retailing and even fighting and killing the Ghanaian for a space in the market.

How about the Nigerian students in Ghana? They come in as students but after one or two semesters they are expelled. Why? They are not only ill mannered but is as if all the bad students in Nigeria are being brought to Ghana but we have our youths to protect also. They come and start doing drugs and Yahoo Yahoo. Picking innocent Ghanaian girls as girlfriends and messing up their lives. An average Ghanaian student does not know what cultism in school mean but not a Nigerian. They want to even form cults in our schools.

The married men. Most of them once they come to Ghana removes their rings and form Mr. Single. Why? They are looking for women to do bad business through at the blind side of the woman involved herself. They come professing love and asking the women to partner with them to open a company. The woman thinking she s met Prince charming agrees then he uses the company to dupe people then runs away leaving the woman to deal with the consequences.

Dear nigerians; we don't hate you guys but some of your people are just bad neighbours. I'm not in no way saying no Ghanaian is doing bad things in other people's country but you see, what is bad is bad. For Africa to succeed we all need to be responsible. Laws are set for a reason. Please let's respect it.

    2. Nice one. This made a whole lot of sense. You are not far from the truth regarding Some Nigerians and the behavior they exhibit. Whenever i'm in the middle east or Asia, i try not to identify with Nigerians because they have left soar taste behind. It is a sad sad story. That is why the Asian continent doesn't waste time to sentence any criminal caught.
The so called Senate who should be ontop of these are either busy, sharing bags of naira or dollars or throwing punches at each other like street urchins and scaly-wags. It's a shame NIGERIA has gotten to this level. Disgrace.

  11. Father time never disappoints. Every seed planted will bear fruit of it's own kind. What goes around comes around. The first shall be the last and the last the first.

When we sow love then the future generations must reap love. When we sow hate the future generations must reap it the same. When Africans put down tribalism then every African will see each other as brothers and sisters and there will be no place for hate or war.

  12. Even during my school days in KNUST Ghana, these Ghanaians have alsways accused us of stealing their girls

  13. I am Nigerian and highly in support of this.
Those igbo boys at circle are disgraceful. They steal, scam, distort movements, harass passersby, and constitute nuisance at the slightest opportunity.
I lived in Ghana for 5yrs and every single time i passed through circle, i prayed for 'something' to be done. It's even more annoying, knowing they are fellow Nigerians.
