Man Loses Family In Explosion

An incident of gas explosion on Friday killed five persons in Okwe community in Asaba, Delta State.

It was gathered that the explosion which immediately threw Asaba and Okwe communities into sorrow and anguish was the second of its kind since this year .....

An eyewitness, Josiah Nwandi told DAILY POST that the gas explosion started in mysterious circumstance as its boom rented Akease street in Okwe community, leaving residents of the area to scamper for their dear life.

He said, “We heard the shout of a woman in a shop where they were filling a gas, and we all moved into the place. On getting there, we discovered blood every where”. He added that a customer was refilling his gas around a cooking stove when the cylinder exploded into a nearby room where a mother and her two children were eating.

It was further gathered that the mother of the children, whose name was given as Rosemary Adebeh, made frantic efforts to save her children but to no avail as fire consumed the three of them while two other persons (including the customer) who were rushed to Okwe community General Hospital gave up the ghost few minutes on their arrival.

Speaking to DAILY POST upon his visit to the families of the victims, the state commissioner for special duties, Barr. Earnest Ogwezzy expressed shock over the incident, but assured that the state government would get to the root of the explosion as it was committed to the well-being of Deltans.

Meanwhile, tears flowed freely as at the time of this report, especially from the husband of the woman who died along with the two children.

The bereaved father cried profusely, lamenting that, “I am finished, I’m finished. Where do I start from? Who did this to me? How can I cope with the situation? It is finished”.

  5. So sad. The importance of safety measures around petroleum products cannot be overemphasised. Many have resorted to using gas since kerosene became too expensive for the common man. However, there should be PBA on how to handle gas in general to avoid this kind of avoidable disaster. I see many who still use their mobile phones and sprays/aerosols around their lighted gas cylinders out of ignorance. May their souls find eternal rest and may God give the bereaved the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
