How To Deal With Culture Shock While Travelling

Culture shock is not uncommon, especially when visiting a new destination. It can be overwhelming, scary and lonely. If you’re considering travelling abroad but are concerned about culture shock, know that there are ways you can overcome it.

Embrace the differences

One of the first thing you must do if and when you experience culture shock is to recognise and embrace the differences. This will definitely help you settle in and actually enjoy your trip.

Keep learning

Learning is an important part of life and the more you learn, the better for you to overcome culture shock. Hence, before you travel, you can do proper research to learn about the locale you are visiting.

Eat somewhere interesting

A big part of overcoming culture shock is exploring and familiarizing yourself with local cuisine. It can be fun to visit restaurants with a unique ambience or an interesting menu. The many side dishes and the novelty of cooking your own food at the table meant each meal was an exciting experience.

Embrace the local language.

A language barrier can make culture shock even tougher. So, speaking even a couple words in their language showed that you are at least trying. This is the case with store owners, strangers on the street and people you will. Embracing the local language will allow you to unlock more knowledge about the culture, too, because the two are intertwined.

Remember why you’re travelling

Remember that you are travelling for a reason. The reason is for exploration and learning more about the world. Keeping that in mind will help you overcome the struggles of culture shock and embrace and enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime journey.

*Nothing can compare to the culture shock i suffered when i entered Austria and Germany for the first time....There are still some things that shock me but i can deal with it now

  2. Lemme tell 2 funny stories. The first day I got to New Jersey the person I was staying with went to work he didn't come home after 6pm I was so worried, I haven't gotten a phone yet so I was waiting hoping that he'll come soon but he didn't come o, around 12am I stood up and entered the street with some money I was looking for a phone booth. 🤣🤣🤣 I was looking for yellow or green umbrella around the corner smh. The few people I asked didn't know what it was. That's how I went back home thinking that something bad has happened and that police will soon come o. I couldn't sleep o till 5am in the morning wen he came back and I was shocked wen he said he has been at work cos I didnt know people worked after 6pm.
Also one time during my first week I said lemme walk around the environment o, I now entered shop rite with $100 I started picking things that didn't concern me, during checkout the total came to $103 and some cents, the cashier said I should take something's out since I only have $100 I said no. In my mind it's just $3 so I was thinking the person behind me will add it up 🤣🤣 but who sigh, I waited there for them to add it till the cashier now brought out his wallet and added the money then he now said to me "welcome to America" in my mind I said what is doing this one. I now went to stand in one corner waiting o after some minutes the cashier guy now asked me what I'm waiting for? I now said I thought he would ask for my number but he said no, what for? I now left 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    5. Yes Bianca Bruno, there are lots of ShopRites in New Jersey. There is one in South Jersey, Sicklerville, to be precise. Was surprised the first day I saw it too, and I had to go in to satisfy my curiosity.
@anon 16:14, why show your stupidity to the world? Before you argue, and try to put someone down, make sure you know your onions.

On another story, on the first time I travelled to the States, I was given a free Chick-Fil A meal. It happened to be around the Christmas season. I placed my order on the chicken nuggets etc, then when it was time to pay, the cashier told me never mind, that it was on the house! As JJC wey I be, he saw the confused look on my face, he had to explain, that it's a happy hour period which they do around the Christmas season. Imagine where Chicken Republic, etc dey give free meal for naija. OMG, I frequent that particular chick-fil A outlet to collect another free meal, for where, name so I burn money tire😥😫😥😫.
