MRS DEES CORNER
CULTURAL DIFFERENCES

I am inter-tribally married, although my husband is not from the  South-West, he was born and raised there.

I experienced culture shock when I moved to Lagos after service year and saw people genuflecting for the elderly. I'm sure some people would have termed me a disrespectful person because I didn't curtsy while greeting. Not that I intentionally did it, but I grew up where it was not the norm.  Even my pastor who was almost eighty years,  I used to greet him thus: Daddy good morning sir( standing erect) . Him: How are you?  ( extending his hand for a shake).  Me:I'm fine sir(accepting the hand shake).

I was in for another shocker when my hubby few weeks to our wedding informed me I should never call his younger brothers by their first names as it was considered disrespectful.  I must always attach 'brother' to their names.  My mouth hung open for a few seconds but I quickly regained my composure. Na wa oo, so I'll start learning how to affix 'brother' to somebody's name instead of the first name basis I was used to? Ihe nke a dikwa egwu.

As a newly married wife,  I took my time to prepare delicacies thinking my hubby would love it not knowing my hubby dreaded meal times because of my local food.  I would go to the market buy ingredients for oha soup (side eyes @ SD)prepare it with enough cow skin, dried fish and  stock  fish. When he's back and I dish out the food, he'll manage to swallow a few lumps and tell me he's satisfied only to see him drinking garri with groundnut few minutes later. I tried to prepare vegetable soup  too, the type with no liquid, he just saw the soup and said he was not eating. But if it's ogbono or egusi soup with very little vegetable ,  he'll eat it with relish.

Time for omugwo,  hubby informed me his mother would come first when I had already envisaged how I would get adequate rest and eat good food prepared by my mum. The one month she stayed was  really tasking. One week after delivery,  I was bending down with CS cut to sweep the house,  cooking morning, afternoon, night for the family and  washing clothes.

When I inquired from hubby why his mum could not help me in the kitchen,  he replied that it is not allowed for a MIL to go into her DIL's kitchen. Her sole duty is to bathe and take care of her grandchildren. Hubby stylishly told me it was even my duty to wash her clothes, afterall she was only helping me out by taking care of  the kids.  I just used cotton wool to block my ears on that one. Nobody will kill me before my time.

When She came for omugwo the second time,  I had already programmed my mind to bear the stress for the number of months she would stay. This time it was more stressful as school runs were added to my to-do list.  Even when my bp was 180/120 due to lack of sleep and rest, there was still no assistance from her.

I also noticed that it's only in Lagos, you can tell the vegetable seller to slice yours for you.  In the East, it's  unheard of ,  I've seen where a buyer in the East wanted her veggies sliced and the seller replied in Igbo "azu kwara gi azu?" meaning "did you get home training at all? "

"I lechara  nne nwanyi di ka m gi cho ka m bere gi ugu?"  So you want an old woman like me to slice vegetable for you?
"Were ya la ulo ga be". Take it home and slice it yourself.  Lol.

A MEMO TO MISSING BLOG VISITORS...

I hear life has been tough on some of you but that is no reason to be ashamed or to hide....
If your marriage that you were so proud about on this blog crashed,it is not enough reason to hide or feel that you will be laughed at here...if they want to laugh, let them laugh,it will not kill you.

I beg to use Mrs A (formerly Mrs Romas)as an example..she told her own story here after a long hiatus and i am so happy that she is in a good place and ingoring or talking back to idiots trying to use her now single status to mock her.

I hear one of my fave blog visitors Nwa amaka had a miscarriage and got divorced...No wonder she vanished!

I hear she now sells used clothes on facebook.

Please if you know her, reach out to her and ask her to mail me..I want to help her advertise her wares here and i want to help out in anyway i can...Woe betide anyone who laughs at people going thru changes in their lives...

This is to let those who are hiding becos things changed in their lives, please come out.....I love you anyway you turn out and I am so sorry life has not been fair but hiding will cause you more pain.

I however respect your privacy if its what will heal you....
I am a very loud one and i hate silence...

One love to everyone...I cant reach out to everyone but what i can do,i do!!!
I am not scrolling back up to edit this,so if you see any typo, take it like that...I am not ashamed to make mistakes anywhere oh....*tongue click*

I NEED TO KNOW

My name is ***** *******. I am an ardent reader of

your blog though i don't comment( don't know how). i believe you can help me put my story out there, maybe I'll find someone to help me on your blog.

i did an insurance policy of 15000 naira per month for 5 years with a
company called STANDARD ALLIANCE LIFE ASSURANCE PLC. between July
2012 and July 2017.

I already signed my discharge voucher on 23rd of
November 2017 which states the total amount and the accompanied
interest.

Since then, i have not gotten any cheque from them or information on
when the money will be paid. This month (July) makes it a year since i
ended the policy with no money coming out.

My marketer doesn't not know what to do, the regional manager is not
helping. I went to there head office in lekki, i was told i have to
see the regional manager in charge of the office handling my account
who is not ready to help me at all. she told me to route my request
through my account officer who in turn told me its in her hands.
I have been silent about this because i don't want to make so much
noise and attract attention but i don't know what else to do.

I just want to know if anyone has been involved with the company
before and how they got their money out.
I have so many things planned for that money but they are just
spoiling everything for me.

Anyone who can help me can send a mail to emeraldkesh@gmail.com.
I really need help.
p.s. i have all necessary documents with me.

*Looks like you have been scammed oh!!!

I'm happy but unsure of what to expect.

Can anyone give me pointers please ie best places to stay (the office is somewhere in Wuse) and how much a one bedroom costs? Best places to shop? (I will miss my favourite shops in Lagos ,cries), places to go, places to avoid.

How do you Abujaphites relax please? I heard it's very hot and quite boring over there? Any information/ pointers to guide me will be very very very much appreciated. *deep sigh

    4. Hi. Abuja is not bad at all. Stay in town, somewhere close to your office. It would save you commuting time to work and a whole lot on the long run. I found it difficult to shop for clothes in Abuja because of the price margin. I used to shop in Lagos during my leave but for emergencies, online shopping is your friend. I didnt hang out a lot, so can't help in that area.Rent is high if you want a good house. Can't say how much now but I stayed in a self con in Wuse Zone 5 and paid N500k. That was 2 years ago. All the best. Enjoy the serenity. I still miss it. Lagos na mad house.

In life NOTHING is forever. NOTHING. That thing that is making you raise shoulders, shake nyansh upandan and mock people, either your marriage, financial status, children etc can be reduced to NOTHING in the blink of an eye.
So many have mocked people here openly, when the same thing befalls them they run away in shame or come back offering Bible verses forming utmost churcheousness. I have no single atom of pity for you. The people you mocked and laughed will go on to have everything that you mocked them for eventually. (Amen) While you start from ground zero, hopefully a wiser person.
    That is life for you.

  37. I did a monthly contribution with Aiico insurance and they refused paying after I terminated the agreement. The truth is, these insurance companies don't know what their marketers go through just to convince people. This guy was practically resuming and closing with me for almost 3 weeks. I filled the form as he advices when I wanted my money but didn't see anything for weeks because I had saved to add up to my house rent. I started calling the office lines everyday and was speaking in Yoruba cussing them. It wasn't funny cos I had spoken to the marketer's manager who promised I will be alerted. It's not a scam. I will strongly suggest you go and shout there. Stop being posh or civil when next you go there and refused to be placate until you get an alert. Maybe you should also resume and close with them one day. 15k monthly for such a long period is no joke. All the best.

  44. I love how we celebrated Martins this morning.
I didn't want to add anything before some one will accuse the poor boy of coming to praise himself as anon as some dunderheads like to do.
I just want to say, don't think you have to sound loud and lousy to gain attention anywhere you are.
When the attention does not come with respect, you are just transient entertainment.

  46. Mrs Dee your hubby sha, she came to enjoy now not to do omugbo, so U should also bend down to wash her clothes in your condition? Na wa anyway I will advise you to get a Househelp. Are you a housewife? I think you should get an 8 to 5 as well, if u can oh. Your BP is already this high, don't kill yourself with house chores n catering for everyone but yourself. Being a full time house wife is no jokes, I can't even imagine sweeping after a week of surgery. Better take care of yourself for your kids sake. Get help

  49. @Mrs Dee, that slicing vegetable part happens in the east o. During my stay in Owerri, I usually shop at 'eke onuwa' market (I hope I spelt it right) along Douglas road, the women there slice ugu without thinking twice.

Can't believe I ate one full coconut unaided and unassisted this afternoon.🤗🤗 Well, it's maize season. Best time to enjoy coconut for me.

  50. The person that did Insurance. My dear you don't have a problem.

Gather all your receipts of payment with the Insurance company, the discharge voucher they gave you. Make photocopies. Google for NAICOM (National Insurance Commission) office nearest to you. Ask for complaints division. Submit your company and watch Standard Alliance bag you to come and collect your cheque within few days. If you did not hear anything from NAICOM within a week, repeat your visit to NAICOM.

I know you wouldn't dare post that comment. Truth is always bitter my dear. Stop using emotional blackmail on those bvs who are not commenting here again. Your gullible doormat bvs might conclude those ones are facing hardship.
There are so many things life can offer, sleeping on a faceless blog from morning to night; Monday to Sunday in order to mark register here is not one of them.
    So stop the blackmailing.
Better use this one as well to cook afang soup. Utobo.
