The Acting Director, Currency Operations Department, CBN, Mrs. Priscilla Eleje made this announcement through her representative, Mrs. Olufolake Ogundero, a Deputy Director of the bank, at a public sensitization and enlightenment campaign at Alesinloye market in Ibadan, Oyo State.
She said: “It is a criminal offense punishable by six months imprisonment or a fine of N50,000 or both to sell, spray or mutilate the banknotes. It is also a criminal offense which attracts five years imprisonment without an option of fine for anybody to counterfeit the naira. Naira is our pride as a country. So, respect it.”
She also promised marketers, merchants, shopping malls and supermarkets that CBN will constantly inject large numbers of banknotes into circulation.

ReplyDeleteCBN staff are the ones who sell it
ReplyDeleteGod bless you. I know of someone who worked at CBN back then. Notes that were to be destroyed was what he used to build his house. He and his colleagues would pump back those currencies into the system. My former boss too did the same (just once though... To my knowledge) he had a close bud who worked at the bank. He was just spending rotten notes anyhow. Sending me around to spend the money for him and even change some at the bank (so na me go dey receive the yabbis) as PA, wetin I for do na.
DeleteThe other day i went to a bank to make withdrawal, the teller gave me the same kind of notes up there. Had to return some to him to change for me n the ones he gave me were not any better. In my mind i was like, if this money is coming from a reputable commercial bank, then there is no hope for our currency.
ReplyDeleteCBN should stop deceiving us, they know the root of the problem but turn a blind eye because officials are making huge profits from it. These notes have expiry life spans, once expired they are supposed to be withdrawn from circulation, destroyed and replaced with new notes. But there is a cartel that reinjects these notes into circulation for profit. It has nothing to do with ordinary Nigerians on the streets. It is the institutional failure of CBN to monitor and enforce a corrupt-free process of notes withdrawal and replacement. Where there is institutional failure impunity reigns supreme. All institutions ate just taking full advantage of the Nigeria's lack of a strong, agile, enlightened, no-nonsense president.
