Soldier Fighting Boko Haram Commits Suicide

A Nigerian Army Captain on duty in the North-East has committed suicide by turning his rifle on his own stomach and opening fire.

It was gathered that the incident occurred at the 7 Division Medical Centre in Maiduguri on June 18, military sources said. He was referred to the facility for medical examination and treatments.

According to an online news medium, the officer’s name is being withheld because it is not clear whether his family members have been notified. He was drafted from the Nigerian Army 22 Armoured Brigade in Ilorin to the North-East as part of the war against Boko Haram terrorists. The brigade has notified the appropriate authorities of the development, including the Defence Headquarters.

Before the officer killed himself, it was gathered, he threatened shooting a storekeeper at the Medical Centre Armoury, who fled for safety. Afterwards, the Captain killed himself. He was rushed for treatment, but passed on shortly thereafter.

The officer was attached to troops operating in Mafa Local Government Area, Borno State, the heart of Boko Haram onslaught. He collected his gun from the armoury on June 18, saying he was returning to Mafa to join his team the next day. The nature of his ailments prior to the suicide, if any, could not be ascertained at press time.

Defence Headquarters and the 7 Division spokespersons did not return requests for comments Wednesday night and Thursday morning. The incident occurred seven months after a soldier opened fire on a Captain, killing him before killing himself. That sparked renewed fears about post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD, among troops combating insurgents. The military said the matter will be investigated, but the outcome remained unknown.

  3. So sad.
I heard one gist from someone in Maiduguri.
The Hausa guy said that they have dismantled Boko haram just that the soldiers are greedy because they're now making money from it. I asked him how, he continued by saying that all those recent suicide bombers were staged and planned by the soldiers so that Nigerians will believe that Boko haram boys are still operating, they can even release a picture to deceive us. My amebo antenna stood still, he said even the Maiduguri fish is being controlled by the soldiers, the surrendered boys and the farmers will process the fish and some soldiers will tax them before taking it outside Maiduguri. I said no wonder the dry fish is now cost and that made me to stop my fish business. Ndi ojoo. God pass them

Also said that any soldier that wanna leave or talked about it openly, they ones benefiting from the situation will ambush and kill then and it will look as if Boko haram killed them.

The question now is.... How did they gain access to where soldiers were before detonating the bomb? All na planned work so that more fund will be released.

The fund being sent to combat boko haram is much and in as much as they are making money out of the situation, they won't leave Maiduguri but will always come up with one suicide bomb or ambush or the other.

Make I go Anon... Abeg o

  4. It's depression, seeing his colleagues dieing right in front of him, these soliders are meant to go for therapies after they return cause the trumma they go through is unbearable, the American soliders are booked for therapy as soon as they get back from war, to bring them back to reality so as so see people as humans as blend again with the society, this therapy may last year before their brains are reset, but for Nigeria, #yimu, you are expected to be normal when you come back from war, forget the reports you hear from the news, Nigerian soliders die I thousands everyday out there. We should always pray for them every day. I feel pity for them. May God continue to guide them. E no easy at all.

  5. When we are so brutal in our way of doing things. Soldiers at the war front should not be left there for too long. There must be a rotation arrangement for their sanity and mental wellbeing. Does the army have psychologists whom they can talk to especially to address ptsd?
