THE WOES OF THE "NIGERIAN GENTLEMEN"(Conclusion)



On more than four occasions, I have witnessed slaps, with alarming stridency, on the face of men courtesy of women. On those occasions, I was not seeing it from the side of a woman and a man, I saw them as two able-bodied humans capable of unleashing trouble. 


Some of those dramas ended in people admonishing the man to accept the ‘dirty’ slap in good faith while the other instances saw the man facing harsh criticisms for returning the slaps. Comments like - ‘Don't you know she is a woman?’ ‘Why would you slap a lady?’ ‘A gentleman won't slap a lady!’- were never too far from the lips of those present. In a scenario at University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Ikere Ekiti campus 2012, best described as extreme, passersby intervened and instructed the girl to slap the guy back three times.

 I enjoyed the show; it gave me an insight into how hypocritical we can be.



 If you can read beyond the lines, you must have realized that I am not blinded by bandwagon philosophies and unconvincing ideas. You must also be aware that when I am moved to address issues, I don't shy from facts and substance. I don't agree with people because of their status or because of the number of people on their side. I do because of the beauty of their ideas and what it may achieve. You may stop reading if you can't endure the theory I will propound here. It is not for uncultured ladies that slap guys as if it is their birth right!



On the issue of slaps, although I see no reason to make my stand and possible reactions known if I were those guys, I will still forge ahead. In Nigeria, your simplicity, personality, popularity or even goodwill may not be enough to shield you from the unruly attitudes of some girls. So, if I get slapped by a "lady," I won't reciprocate. This is not because she is a "lady," it is because I have the moral duty to exhibit the good upbringing I had and the legal duty to avoid starting violence or aggravating one. Simply, I won't reciprocate a slap by a lady not because she thinks she is a lady, but because I won't reciprocate a slap from anybody- male or female. 


However, if reporting at the police station is the step I would take if a man slaps me, being a lady won't make me change that, I shall report her too and she will face the legal consequence. There may also be an aggressive fellow who will reciprocate on my behalf, whether I know him or not, I am sure I won't have the strength to stop him. The first slap must have weakened me.

However, for people who do not share my school of thought and philosophies, their definition of morality is probably different. In that case I think anytime a supposed lady slaps them, she deserves the right to a ‘dirty slap’. A person is reasonably presumed to expect the consequence of his action and be ready to face it. If a lady had the strength to launch a clean slap on another man's face, she must be ready to embrace a dirty slap. The most considerate and reserved of mankind would certainly lose his calm if he gets slapped. It is  beyond a physical effect, it is also psychological. A gentleman from a good background will never slap a lady, same way a lady who is well brought up won't slap a man. Is someone insinuating that I am endorsing the slap trade? No, I just understand that a ‘dirty’ slap can change a gentleman to an ordinary man and vice versa.


By the way, are you aware that every female is not entitled to be addressed as a lady? If you are not aware, the word ‘lady’ is a civil term of respect for "a woman of breeding or higher class; a woman of authority and ideal attitude, specifically the female equivalent to gentleman or lord." Not too many of the girls that parade themselves as "ladies" these days are of class! A few of them exude finesse and command respect. As a matter of fact, I do not address every female as a lady. The penchant for education now is not for the good of the worsened nation, it is to further choke it and rid it of air of sanity.

URGENT MEMO TO ALL TEACHERS

Hi Stella, i messaged you sometime ago, telling you i got a job a
teaching and drug addict issue.

So something happened at my place of work that i want teachers on this
blog to learn from. A K.G 2 teacher went ahead to cut the nails of one
of her her student in school  wich happens to be child of the
proprietor of the school.

Trouble started yesternite when boss told his children to bring blade
for him to cut the children nail.

The boy told his father who happens to be the proprietor that his aunt
don cut his nail. Wahala, boss was so angry that he called some staff
to send the teacher number to her yesternite. She wasnt reached sha.

I got the news wen i got to work, all teachers were on silent mode,
Patiently waiting so that we can beg on behalf of her. Boss was just
screaming that if anything happen to his child, he will get the staff
arrested and what if na another pikin fingernail she cut nko.

What would have happen, they might say the child has been having
temperature since the nails have been put down. We are still begging
boss till the time this message is coming in, and he said he doesnt
want to hear anything. We still dont know what he will do.

LESSON: Do not ever cut your student nails or hair self even if it is

longer than length of a biro. DONT!! DONT!! DONT!!!

YOU DONT HAVE TO BE RICH TO GIVE

I had an experience on my way to work today, that I think necessary to share. Well, I feel compelled to share with you and with every other person.

I usually have my meal prepared and packaged for work each day, but on rare occasions, due to human frailty, my meal might not be ready before I leave home. Today we all woke up a few minutes late and dragged our feet endlessly. When it became clear that I would be unable to meet up with work if I had insisted on having Porridge yam prepared for me, I settled for fried plantain and egg; that was ready in no time and I left home quite early.

I knew that the meal would not be sufficient for the day, particularly as I have resolved to increase my food intake in the hope that I would put on some weight, I decided I would have to prepare noodles at work for brunch or lunch to supplement my fried plantain and egg. So I decided to buy onion when I was almost at work.

I saw a kiosk in an uncompleted building, I wondered if onion would be sold there, considering the fact that the kiosk was not located in a residential or even a low income residential area, where people might need to buy such an item. I decided to give it a try.

I walked in and saw a young girl boiling water on a coal tripod cooker and about two other young children going about what I presume would be their daily house chores. At that point I realised that the kiosk was owned by the man who lived in the uncompleted building with his family.

I quickly looked through the kiosk and I said to myself "They can't possibly sell onion here". I turned to leave, when the owner of the kiosk spoke to me, "what do you want". "I want to buy onion", I replied. "How much" he asked, "just a small onion' I said. He asked again “Like how much". The truth was that I wanted something worth #10 or #20, like I said, I wanted something really small. But I was too ashamed to mention #10 or #20 to him. So I said "Something really small".

He then said, "It is #100", I was upset, "which kain #100, small onion wey I won carry cook indomie nah im you dey tell me #100, e too much", I said that and tried walking away. He eventually said "okay, I go give you 2 for #100", It was still too much and quite expensive for me. As he spoke, he walked away from me and into the rooms in the uncompleted building to get the onion. I walked away, I had no plans of spending #100 on a little onion I intended cooking my #100 indomie with.



I had exited the premises, when he ran outside and was calling out to me, he was saying “come and take the onion nah, come and take it and go and cook your indomie, I am giving it to you free". I turned and saw his arm, stretched out towards me, holding a bulb of onion, larger than I needed; he was giving it to me free!!!!!!!!!!!!. I was short of words, something in me broke; this man who lived in an uncompleted building with his family, cooked with a charcoal tripod cooker, owned a kiosk with goods not worth more than #20,000 (on a most liberal assessment of his shop) could still give to me!!!!!!!!!!!!


I walked back towards him, took the onion and whispered a barely audible "thank you" which was not loaded with gratitude, not because I was not grateful, but because I found it so unbelievable that he could take a little from the little he owned and give to me a total stranger who had done nothing to earn his kindness. I was dazed and filled with awe at how humane a human being could be, that I did not communicate my gratitude well enough.



I turned and walked away from him, with a priceless lesson that nothing will EVER take from me; You don't have to be rich to give, you don't have to give the world. All that God needs from us is to strive to touch a heart with whatever means the Lord has blessed us with. Giving never impoverishes us, it may diminish our material resources temporarily, but it enriches our soul and makes the recipient richer in love, gratitude and in determination to touch one more soul, just as his was touched.


These words do not capture adequately the impact that selfless, seemingly little act of giving had on me, words fail me and my vocabulary is too limited to even begin to express how I feel, but I do hope that you understand the message my words were unable to convey and I pray that the Almighty will give us the grace to heal a heart as we give of ourselves, our time, our resources, our words and our love. Nothing is too small or great to give.
