FG Rejects Global Report That Nigeria's Poverty Level Has Overtaken India's

The Federal Government on Wednesday dismissed the Brookings Report that Nigeria has overtaken India as the country with the largest number of extreme poor in early 2018.

Addressing State House reporters, the Minister of Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah, said the indices used for the report might have been complied when Nigeria was in recession.

He said: “I think first, we need to understand when we get these reports that there are reports that are lagging in indicators which means, people are reporting on history. There are reports that are leading indicators which means that they are forward looking and of course, there reports that capture generally what you do which is current.

"They are actually dealing with what is current. So, when you get reports from Brooking institute or all sorts of people, you need to look at the context. Somebody may have written a report when we were in recession. Remember that if you are in a recession, what it means is that even though, your population is growing, people don’t stop procreating, your growth fact, which means that in theory depending on how they run those numbers, you will be going the other way.

There is absolutely no question that there an urgency to create employment in Nigeria. And it has to be a collective responsibility. What I can tell you with certainty based on ones background in business and economics, is that if we complete the things on infrastructure and you implement these reports we are doing, that is what I mean by a leading indicator, poverty will go down. There is no magic to it. But you have to do it first, you have put in the infrastructure, you have to implement the economic programme which is what will create the opportunities, they don’t drop from the sky.

So, I think we should roll up our sleeves as a people and do the work because, if we don’t do it, our people continue to bear children obviously, they would get poorer. So, I don’t think we should kill ourselves that poverty is something just happen. I think it comes out of the urgent need we have as a country which is why we are focusing as a government to make sure that we create the enabling environment, the infrastructure that are required to create opportunities for our people and I believe that will happen in the process of time.”

  2. Well, I know for sure that I am not poor but the federal government should know that there is hunger in this country. They need to do something about it. That being said, any news on the money they want to share to nigerians? How far?

  3. This report is very correct...most people I know are worse off financially in this 2018 than they were in 2015, although they all pretend as if everything is fine and everyone of them are balling.
Buhari's govt is the worst govt that Nigeria has had since the inception of democracy in this country.

  7. Do we need the data in this report?
Is it not obvious on the streets and villages in Nigeria?
What social program does Nigeria have for her poor people?
Whereas the University tuition in public schools are being increased, minimum wage remains at 18k, doesn't that translate to abysmal poverty?
The thing is probably underrepresented; did they enter the bushes of the south, North east and the creeks of Niger delta where there are no addresses?
They probably based this on the streets of Lagos where "brushed up" poor people live.
FGN should cover their faces with a basket of shame!

  8. I was once serving in a Northern hospital where the HIV prevalence was more that 50 percent -by my own survey because they do not have records.
At that time, there was an Hiv/Aids conference going on in Abuja and the northern delegation was boasting that they have the lowest hiv prevalence "having cadged" their women indoors.
I do not take any data from the Nigerian government serious.
The truth is that those men met a lot of girls outside and came in to distribute it to their wives. Once we saw one in the clinic, the next days, the remaining three will arrive with same diagnosis.
Please Nigeria does not have health /social statistics at all.
