Buhari Declares June 12 Democracy Day And Confers Post Humous Award On MKO Abiola

The federal government has declared June 12 as the new date for the celebration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day. The government announced this on Wednesday, saying it is to honour late MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election which was annulled.....

The government also awarded Abiola with the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) title.

What do you think about this?lets discuss!
I think they should swear in MKO Posthumously and refer to him as Former President if they are serious and this is not some PR stunt for the 2019 election!

    1. That is supposed to be the real and true democracy day in Nigeria.

And nothing wrong about it being another holiday. Nigeria does not even have enough "declared" public holidays.

    2. Stella, he cannot be called a former president or listed as one of the presidents of the country because he was never sworn in. It is like a person who died after winning an election but not sworn us. However, his place in Nigeria’s political space should always be acknowledged when teaching about events of presidency and the position. And yes, this date is supposed to be the factual and most authentic democracy day for Nigeria. Whether it is for political reason or not, it is commendable. It is a right step. People have asked for this for years.

  7. Awwwwww, this is a very great news especially for the people of the South West. But I hope they won't let this make them vote against their wishes. No offence meant but South westerners are too easily cajoled by little things and it makes them act indecisive remember, no offence meant (judging by previous elections)...

    Back to the news...

Heard (heard oh) students of unilag came out to jubilate.
This took sooo long but its better than nothing.

With this news Now, people will have to converge at eagles square for another democratic day? Or does it start next year?

So another public holiday awaits us yh? Na so πŸ‘

I witness everything back to back, still very fresh in my memory. I'm so happy for this great news.
Though I'm no longer a fan of president Buhari, but he just earned a double respect from me.

This declaration and the not to young to run bill is a big one for the entire country.

I saw Stella hash tags this morning, I hope the not too young to run bill has not open a door for young driven criminals to come into power and loot too!
      God bless his soul
      God bless the Abiola's family
      God bless Nigeria πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬

    3. Its just a real pity, Abiola should have never gone into politics. he should have remained a business man. He would have even been greater than Dangote today.
All his businesses, investments have all gone into ruins.
Its too little to late. This award and public holiday is to do what for the family ???
The man was loved by everyone, I can remember back then some of his daughters were in my primary school (Bisi's kids), they use to be the envy of everyone. Everything is just scattered, even the kids are fighting eachother. A real pity.

    Outright nonsense and

Cant wait for 2019 to vote out rubbish government.

  12. Buhari is proving himself a politrickcian sorry politician by the day. First it was the not too young to run bill signed into law with the speed of light now this. He in his mind has secured the youths and then the western part of the country. I wonder what he has in store for the southern part. I'm voting for the first time next year by the grace of God. Just like it was anyone but Jonathan, it will be..... complete the rest at home.

  13. Ok na. So no be only lagos state civil servants will enjoy this. Me too join

  14. It's been over due!
About making him a posthumously former president, it depends on the activists that are handling it. I think if they can bring it to the awareness of the president, he might consider it too.

But I'm happy about this news. I witness this election as a grown teenager and I will never forget that dark age in Nigeria.

It's like how president Trump granted posthumous pardon the the first black American boxing Champ Jack Johnson. It didn't just happened, some top American activists helped in Making it happened.
Similar case of the woman Mr. Trump just granted freedom after spending more than two decades in prison. It was Kimberly Kardashian that has been on the case and she finally met with Mr. Trump. Trump finally signed that she should be released two days ago.

So, I believe the fight to declare MKO Abiola a posthumous president is still possible even though not by the present government.

    1. You cannot grant someone President title posthumously. So they will write from which year to which year. Same reason you cannot grant the CGFR, so long as the person was never sworn in. The constitution doesn’t make room for such.

  15. Stella you r so right on this. 2019 is loading so anything to get voted in again but we rebuke him. Let him go n rest n spend time to bond with his grand kids.

He is the worst president we have ever had. If he likes he can even make Awolowo day. No one is falling for his gimmicks. He can continue fooling his Fulani people.
I have never voted in my life. But I must vote this man out. Even Osinbajo cant help him.

I commend Buhari on this great honour to late MKO...But we Nigerians didn't for Buhari for this we voted him to better the Economy and give us basic amenities...Trying to work on the sentiment and gather sympathy from a particular tribe shows how dubious Buhari's administration is,Nigerians especially the Yoruba's should read between the lines use your head

  32. Holiday is Starting frm next year. I don't think the yorubas are easily cajoled but they do Ofcux have a voting pattern which is usually collectively and one-sided... I think other geopolitical zone are also guilty of same but the south-west votes usually carry weight and dictates the winners hence it is much talked about.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. South West votes does not carry weight or dictate winner.

What happens is if 2 major tribes come together r and vote for one person, of course it would carry weight. Especially when you are joining voted with the hausa. The hausas are more in number, so any other tribe they join forces with will win the election
